Washington Homeowners Insurance – How to Get the Best Rate

March 10th, 2010

Looking for Washington homeowners insurance? Want to get the best rate with an A-rated insurance company? Here’s how to do it.

Washington Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners insurance is a must for all Washington home owners. It protects you and your family from unexpected losses and gives you protection in case of a liability lawsuit.

There are three things to consider when choosing homeowners insurance in Washington – coverage, cost, and company.

Coverage

When it comes to coverage you want to make sure you can rebuild your home if it’s destroyed, and replace your personal belongings if they’re damaged.

Mortgage lenders require that you purchase homeowners insurance based on the appraised value or the purchase price of your home. But this is not the amount of coverage you need. You’re better off finding out how much it would cost to rebuild your home from a local builder then insuring it for that amount.

When it comes to insuring your personal property, insurers use one of two methods: 1. Actual cash value pays you the value of an item minus depreciation for the years you owned it. 2. Replacement cost pays the full value of your property. Replacement cost is more expensive, but worth it in the long run.

Cost

Get quotes from several companies. There are websites where you can get quotes from a number of different insurance companies so you can compare rates. Some of theses sites even provide a chat service so you can talk with an insurance professional and get answers to your questions. (See link below.)

Raise your deductible. You can save money on your premiums by increasing your insurance deductibles, but you’ll have to pay more if you have a claim.

Ask your agent about discounts. Most companies offer discounts for having both your auto and homeowners insurance with them, for having security and safety features installed, for having a good claims history, and for a variety of other reasons.

Company

In addition to getting the best insurance rate you can, you also want to make sure you’re getting a reliable company.

Check with your state’s department of insurance website to make sure that the company you’re considering has a good reputation and will pay your claims. Then check A.M. Best’s website (ambest.com) to see their financial rating.

Verasun, General Motors Bring 1st E85 Fueling Location to Washington

March 10th, 2010

VeraSun Energy Corporation announced in June 28 the opening of the first E85 retail fueling location in Washington, D.C. The inauguration was the result of an ongoing joint effort of VeraSun and General Motors, maker of quality GMC exhaust system, to expand the availability and consumer awareness of E85.

A blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline that is now available at the Georgetown Chevron, VeraSun’s branded VE85(TM) is situated at 2450 Wisconsin Ave. N.W., and in Arlington, Va., at the Navy Exchange station near the Pentagon. The addition of two retail fueling locations augments the number of stations selling VE85(TM) to more than 90 in nine states and the District of Columbia.

Don Endres, VeraSun’s Chairman and CEO, said their partnership shows the efforts being made to improve the availability of E85 in the nation. He explains E85 has been available throughout the Midwest for years, and several Americans have used it almost exclusively to fuel their vehicles. He extends his gratitude to have worked jointly with their partners to bring VE85(TM) to the D.C. metro zone so that drivers in Washington, D.C. may experience the clean, high-octane product which strengthens the country’s energy independence and helps the environment by minimizing both greenhouse gas and tailpipe emissions.

Since the companies began working together to expand availability and increase the awareness of VE85(TM), the announcement marks the fifth collaboration VeraSun and GM have entered with a third-party retailer. The first initiative was launched in May 2005 with pilot stations in Sioux Falls, S.D. It has widened to include locations in Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Pittsburgh.

Elizabeth Lowery, GM vice president of environment, energy and safety policy, said they believe renewable fuels like E85 give US the greatest near-term potential to actually minimize gasoline consumption and vehicle emissions.

On this initiative, Enterprise Rent-A-Car joined VeraSun and GM by announcing that it is designating its premier rental location in Washington, D.C., as an official “E85/FlexFuel branch”. Owning the world’s largest fleet of FlexFuel Vehicles, with over 41,000 cars and trucks, Enterprise committed to fuel 50 GM FlexFuel vehicles from its location at 1029 Vermont Ave. N.W., at the Georgetown Chevron. Moreover, the vehicles will be stocked with materials about VE85(TM) and directions to the fueling location.

Matthew G. Darrah, Enterprise Rent-A-Car senior vice president of North American operations, said they are privileged to work with VeraSun Energy to make it easier for their customers to make sustainable choices.

Chairman of the Senate Energy Committee Sen. Jeff Bingaman said a title that promotes the production, distribution and use of clean, renewable, made-in-America transportation fuels like E85 is an important part of the energy bill the Senate just passed.

The Georgetown Chevron location, owned by Mid-Atlantic Petroleum Properties, marks a vital accomplishment for the fuel retailer in offering E85 at the first of its 23 company- operated locations in the Washington, D.C. metro zone.

Carlos Horcasitas, Chairman and CEO of Mid-Atlantic, said Mid-Atlantic is proud to be the first retail chain in Washington D.C. to offer its customers E85 and, in particular, VeraSun’s branded E85, VE85(TM).

Also backed up during the June 28 announcement were the representatives from the District, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

VeraSun Energy Corporation is headquartered in Brookings, South Dakota, and a leading producer of renewable fuel.

All About Washington D.c. Translation Service Offerings

March 10th, 2010

Need A Specialized Washington DC Translation Service? If you are in search of Washington D.C. translation services, you are in luck. Washington D.C. translation service offerings are plentiful due to this being an important area in the global economy. How do you choose the right translation service for your specific business needs?

Do you need specialized Washington D.C. translation service offerings? There are companies that might be generalists and others that are more specialized. Some businesses might offer various forms of translation or interpreting. You might want to inquire with companies about whether or not they are well versed in your specific business niche. Perhaps there are nuances and terminology that your business demands for well translated documents or other media.

What media are you using? Many translation service businesses are able to deal with hand written, typed and audio or video transcribing and translation needs. Are you looking for translation on paper or translation in a live interpreter scenario? Do you need multiple language knowledge as well as specific business knowledge or are your needs fairly general? These variables can impact your choices and the pricing plus turnaround time for your projects.

When you choose a company to handle your foreign language translation needs, you want guarantees and to have specific expectations. Beyond the pricing, you want to know what your lead time will be and how the finished product will be presented to you. It?s a great idea to ask for samples and testimonials and find out if the translation service has experience in your specific business.

Looking for a Wasington D.C. translation service and other resources?

While industry experience may not always be necessary, knowing whether the translation company you choose has experience in your business area can be helpful when looking at multiple companies to choose from.

Should you buy a computerized translation software package instead and deal with it yourself? While this area is growing in terms of modernization and ability, many people find that using a computer program alone is ineffective and inaccurate as well. Human intervention is typically required and human intervention where knowledge of the subject matter is present is even more effective. Knowing how to speak, write and understand in two different languages is typically not enough. Business expertise and experience is frequently a major component.

If you regularly deal in transcribing, translation and interpreting activities in your line of business you may want to look for a company that can service all your needs. There are specialized companies who work in one area or ones that work in many. Some companies deal with various translation experts based on different needs but finding a one stop solution can be very helpful for your business. Not only will you know that your needs can be met but the centralized billing and single point of contact option can make this worthwhile.

Choosing a translation service may happen through trial and error. It?s prudent to test a service with a small project wherever possible before turning all your translation needs over to them. Finding a match for your specific business requirements is important and luckily, Washington D.C. translation service offerings are in abundance.

Why Haven’T We Heard Anymore About Annshalike Hamilton, Quincy Smith Or Ahmed Guled And How Did Gregory Washington Travel Under The Radar For So Long?

March 10th, 2010

“It is like she never existed. I don’t live in North Minneapolis but I still care about the area. I want to know where the outcry is. This is very scary to me as a society no one cares. I Googled her name and nothing new comes up. It is really awful.”

…Comment from M. Cullen, sent to the Independent Business News Network

Again, Minneapolis/St. Paul residents of color, we have been “bamboozled, befuddled and bumped!”  The self-appointed Black leaders have sold us out again for what we call, “chicken feed.” With no public outcry, the following incidents do not get the proper attention:

To refresh your memory, Annshalike Hamilton was the 15-year-old girl, 7 months pregnant, whose frozen body, found nude in a garage at 2222 4th St. N., killed by blunt force injury.  North Minneapolis media outlets refuse to mention her name or even further cover this story. Local Black clergy have remained very quiet about the young woman’s death. Virtually no outcry from the community, Annshalike has become a distant memory with her death just added to the list of heinous incidents in North Minneapolis that get dumped in the “quiet zone.”

But we do have to stop and give credit to MADDADS director V.J. Smith and Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, who on one of the coldest days of the year held a gathering of community people on the street where Ms. Hamilton’s body was found. Other than these actions of integrity, caring and demanding justice no other group has moved forward in the ongoing investigation of the young girl’s death. “What’s up with North Minneapolis social service, advocacy, public policy groups?”

In more breaking news, Two weeks ago, Gregory Washington sang in the KARE 11 studio, promoting his new CD. Tuesday, the well known Twin Cities musician and gospel singer, who is 32 years old, is charged with statutory rape for allegedly having sex with a 15 year old girl. Police say Washington is an organ player and choir director at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist in south Minneapolis. This is not the only incident for Mr. Washington involving his sexual appetite. Minneapolis Public Schools and Friendship Academy have a huge problem in regards to this case due to the day to day contact Washington had with young girls and his status as an outside contractor rather than someone who is in close contact with students.   ”The idea of a person of trust, a person part of church having sex with someone half their age when the person is under 16 is repulsive,” says Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

Prosecutors say the girl’s mother learned about the relationship when she saw her daughter wearing a new ring, a gift allegedly from Gregory Washington.

This brings another key issue to light.  Community members have put their trust in “self-appointed” leaders who don’t have the community’s best interest in heart. We allege that this is probably not the first time this has happened to a young woman around “people of trust,” but an ongoing trend of deception and bad behavior that is common and kept quiet in circles of organized religion in the African American community.

Quincy Smith was an overnight disc jockey at public, non-profit community radio station KMOJ-FM.  Quincy De’Shawn Smith survived an encounter with a police Taser in 2005 and in late November had learned that his suit alleging police brutality could go to trial.

On Dec. 9, however, Smith, 24, died after a second confrontation, this time with officers who had been called to the 1000 block of Knox Avenue N. on a report of a domestic assault involving a man with a gun. Smith struggled with officers as they tried to arrest him and once again was hit with an electric charge from a Taser gun.

Smith’s case remains in question and no progress in the investigations on why this young man was cut down in his life’s prime.

Ahmed Guled – a member of the Somali community in Minneapolis and St. Paul who regularly took elders to and from the store on a weekly basis was gunned down in February, shot more than 13 times by Minneapolis Police. This is not the first time that the Minneapolis police shoot inhumanely a Somali man. Recalling the shooting incident of a Somali man who was also killed inhumanely manner that was a mentally ill in 2005.

Sources say the alleged stolen vehicle was loaned to him to pick up his Father from the airport returning from Kenya.

There are many reasons why community members, self-appointed leaders and elected officials don’t demand answers for heinous actions that affect the quality of life for us. Maybe it’s time to take a closer look and let your voice be heard. If people didn’t stand up, we as a country would have never seen the likes of Malcolm X; Dr. Martin Luther King, Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson.

Furthermore, one day Blacks will not have the voices of the 60’s and 70’s.  When your unjustly released from a project, job or get mistreated, who will you turn to for advocacy with complaints in the Black community falling on deaf ears?

Don’t let Annshalike Hamilton, Quincy Smith or Ahmed Guled just become distant memories of the past.  Each person had goals and desires in life that were cut short due to “controllable” circumstances.  If there was an outcry, from the community and accountability demanded, I would imagine we would could of one day passed these people on the street and said, “Hello!”

…Your move.

Five Washington Businesses to Be Honored by the EPA for Their Energy Conservation Efforts

March 9th, 2010

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this week notified five Washington-based businesses that they will receive 2009 ENERGY STAR awards at a ceremony on March 31 in Washington, D.C. The energy conservation efforts of Advantage IQ, Kennedy Associates, Providence Health & Services, Puget Sound Energy and Seattle Lighting all received EPA national recognition.

The EPA gives ENERGY STAR awards annually to organizations that have made outstanding contributions to protecting the environment through efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution. “Energy efficiency reduces consumption and pollution, creates jobs and makes our economy more efficient,” said Gov. Chris Gregoire. “Through their efforts, this year’s winners from Washington prove our state is a leader in energy efficiency by using our natural resources wisely and improving our economic competitiveness. The country is taking notice.”

The Washington winners were selected from among 12,000 organizations across the United States for their leadership in addressing global warming by delivering information and services to their customers that increase energy efficiency. A total of 90 organizations were recognized nationwide.

The winning Washington state initiatives involved:

Advantage IQ, Sustained Excellence award (Spokane headquarters)

Advantage IQ offers qualifying clients the ability to automate their ENERGY STAR building rating process and has completed over 85 percent of all automated building ratings issued by the EPA. Advantage IQ’s proprietary system gathers cost and consumption data and then interfaces with ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager, allowing companies to benchmark and assess consumption across their portfolio against others in their industry. Clients are able to identify under-performing buildings, verify efficiency improvements, and receive EPA recognition for superior energy performance.

Partnering with over 500 multi-site companies nationwide to assess energy costs and usage, Advantage IQ offers a full suite of energy management services to help companies balance the financial, social and environmental aspects of doing business.

Kennedy Associates, Partner of the Year award (Seattle headquarters)

An EPA ENERGY STAR partner since 2005, Kennedy’s ENERGY STAR program is a key component of its commitment to Responsible Property Investing (RPI) and improving energy efficiency across its portfolio of commercial real estate assets. The award highlights the work of Kennedy’s ENERGY STAR and RPI Committees and details Kennedy’s creation of new software tools, guidance manuals, ENERGY STAR reports and training provided for its asset managers and analysts during 2008. Kennedy benchmarks all eligible office and industrial buildings monthly within the ENERGY STAR, which currently represents greater than 23 million square feet. Kennedy’s 2008 benchmarking activities resulted in a 4.5 percent reduction in energy use, compared to a 2.1 percent reduction in 2007, estimated energy savings of approximately $660,000 and the reduction of 5,187 metric tons of CO2. ENERGY STAR-labeled buildings within the Kennedy portfolio represent approximately $2 billion in market value.

Providence Health & Services, Sustained Excellence award (Seattle headquarters)

Providence Health & Services knows that caring for the health and wellness of people in the communities we serve also means caring for the environment. Since 1997, Providence has made a committed effort to managing and reducing energy utilization in our hospitals, clinics and administrative buildings. Partnering with companies such as Puget Sound Energy and Advantage IQ has helped Providence to seek out renewable energy alternatives and reduce our demand on traditional energy sources. Providence also incorporates energy saving features in our newly constructed and remodeled facilities, such as motion activated lighting and high efficiency heating and cooling systems. This is the third year Providence has received an EPA ENERGY STAR award. In addition, eight Providence facilities were recognized in 2009 as ENERGY STAR Certified Hospitals/Medical Buildings — the most of any health care system in the nation.

Puget Sound Energy, Partner of the Year (Bellevue headquarters)

In addition to working with dozens of ENERGY STAR award recipients’ local operations — including Providence Health & Services hospitals, PSE won its own ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award for Energy Efficiency Program Delivery. PSE’s winning program is the Washington-based utility’s Residential New Construction ENERGY STAR Lighting Program, which works with participating showrooms and distributors to provide point-of-sale incentives to home builders in its 11-county service area. Builders receive the incentives for installing ENERGY STAR pin-based fixtures in new single family homes. In 2008, additional program outreach to builders, contractors, manufacturers, and new home buyers resulted in a surprising upswing in participation, despite a 30 percent downturn in construction projects, demonstrating the value of energy efficiency as a means of economic stimulus in uncertain times.

George Washington Education, Few Facts

March 9th, 2010

George Washington was born on his father’s plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on February 22, 1732. His father, Augustine Washington was not only the leading planter in the area, but he also served as a justice of the county court.

George was born from Augustine’s second marriage, after his first wife died leaving two sons and daughter to be raised. George was the oldest of the six children Augustine had with his second wife, Mary Ball.

Not much is known about George Washington’s childhood. And little is known about the George Washington education.

Most children in Virginia were taught at home by private tutors, or in local private schools. Boys usually stated formal education at the age of seven. They would start with lessons in reading, writing, and basic arithmetic.

Boys would later learn classic languages, Greek and Latin. They also were taught bookkeeping, geometry, and surveying. If their fathers were wealthy, they would be sent to England to complete their education.

George might have gone to England to further his education like his two older half brothers did, but he wasn’t able to after his father died.

The George Washington education may have began with school near his home for a few years. He possibly went to another school later. We do know that he excelled in mathematics and learned surveying.

Although most sons of gentlemen learned Greek and Latin, George never learned any other language. Nor did he ever go to college. It’s been estimated that the George Washington education came to an end around the age of 15.

Social skills were considered an extremely important part of any young man or woman’s education by the gentry class. George spent more and more time with his half brother Lawrence in his home at Mount Vernon after their father died.

Lawrence gave George the help he needed by tutoring him in his studies. Lawrence also taught him his social graces and introduced him into society.

The George Washington education was seen as defective his whole life. He made every effort to make up for all the things he didn’t learn in school by reading books and learning from people he respected.

He built a vast personal library in his years of personal study. He also wrote quite a bit and subscribed to plenty of newspapers.

George may have placed such a high value on education because of his incomplete formal schooling. When he died, his will donated money for building a school in Alexandria, Virginia and for a national university.
