Watch more travel, music, and news videos on www.vbs.tv We went to London to tell the story of pirate radio secret urban studios that transmit music from concrete tower blocks to the city, and met with DJs, and station managers, rappers and MCs. We met with DJ Scratcha from RINSE FM, MC Flirt from old school KOOL FM, J2k, Jammer, and Logan Sama. We uncovered how they stay underground and away from the authorities, while still setting the new music standard across London. We sailed to the source, where it all started massive concrete and steel forts that sit at the mouth of the Thames River. We met the people who pioneered the spirit of pirate, and played the music that London wanted to hear. They set the standard, and when the authorities shut them down, pirate sounds went into the urban underground.

Obama Praises U.S. Troops’ Legacy in South Korea

By Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone C. Marshall Jr.
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, March 25, 2012 – Visiting with U.S. troops stationed in South Korea near the demilitarized zone, President Barack Obama lauded their historic security role that assisted South Korea as it transformed itself into a democratic and prosperous nation in the years following the Korean War.

President Barack Obama is briefed by Army Lt. Col. Ed Taylor as he views the demilitarized zone from Observation Post Ouellette at Camp Bonifas, South Korea, March 25, 2012. Official White House Photo by Chuck Kennedy

“When you think about the transformation that has taken place in South Korea during my lifetime, it is directly attributable to this long line of soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines [and] coast guardsmen who were willing to create the space and the opportunity for freedom and prosperity,” said Obama, who’s in South Korea to attend a Nuclear Security Summit in the capital city of Seoul.
At Camp Bonifas, located near the demilitarized zone that has divided North and South Korea since the Korean War armistice was signed in 1953, Obama told the troops they’re serving on “freedom’s frontier.” About 28,000 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea today.
“And the contrast between South Korea and North Korea could not be clearer, could not be starker, both in terms of freedom, but also in terms of prosperity,” Obama said.
The president attributed South Korea’s success to the “incredible” resilience, talents and hard work of their people.
“But it also has to do with you guys,” Obama told troops. “And so my main message is the same, obviously, to every base that I go to … all around the world, which is, I could not be prouder of what you’re doing. Everybody back home could not be prouder of what you guys do each and every day — the dedication, the professionalism that you show.
“But there’s something about this spot in particular,” he continued, “where there’s such a clear line and there’s such an obvious impact that you have for the good each and every day that should make all of you proud.”
The president shared an anecdote of a conversation he’d had with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.
“Last time I was here, I was having lunch with the president of South Korea, President Lee,” Obama said. “And he talked about how he was a small child when the Korean War was taking place, and its aftermath, and the brutal poverty, the fact that they had nothing.
“And he went on to be an auto executive, and ultimately, the president of his country, and watch it grow,” Obama continued. “And he specifically said to me — and this was a private moment; he didn’t say this in front of the press, … he said, ‘The only reason that was able to happen — and I still think back to all those American soldiers and the sacrifices that they made.’”
Obama expressed his pride in the job U.S. troops have done in South Korea and said he is grateful for the legacy they are carrying on.
“We’re proud of you,” Obama told the U.S. service members, “and I hope that all your family back home knows how proud your commander-in-chief is of you.”

The Concert Effect – Better Known As Ringing Ears Concert

June 30th, 2012

Ringing Ears Concert – Not a New Band
Have you ever had ringing in ears after listening to soft music? Probably not, but if you have ever attended a loud concert, you may have experienced a condition sometimes referred to as “ringing ears concert.” Luckily, this condition is only a temporary side effect of listening to loud music for a short period of time; however, listening to loud music on a continual basis may permanently damage your ears.

Attending a concert, listening to and watching your favorite band play their hearts out can be the thrill of a lifetime. However, when the music is too loud or you when you are sitting too close to the speakers or the stage, your ears are exposed to extraordinarily loud sounds. Our ears are delicate organs and were not meant to be abused by such loud sounds.

Why Mom told you to turn the music down
Within your inner ear are thousands of tiny hairs cells.

These tiny hairs vibrate when sound waves pass over them and convert the sound waves into acoustical vibrations. These vibrations are sent to the audio portion of the brain which coverts them into sound. Studies have shown that loud music damages these tiny hair cells. When these hair cells become damaged, they begin to leak continuous signals to the brain resulting in the constant ringing or other ear noise tinnitus suffers hear.

“Ringing ears concert” is not limited to listening to live bands. Listening to loud music in the car or via headphones or ear plugs can also create the same phenomenon. In addition, it is not only music that can cause ringing in the ears, other loud sounds such as gunshots or blasts from explosions can also cause the ringing. The general consensus is that a sound level of 70 dB’s or higher for an extended period of time may cause damage to your ears. As a point of reference, a vacuum emits a sound of approximately 70 dB’s while a lawn mower emits a sound of approximately 85 dB’s

Can I take two aspirin?
Yes, but it won’t help unless you have a headache. The best thing to do after leaving a loud concert is to relax as much as possible and do not subject your ears to anything loud until your ears can adjust back to normal. If the ringing is simply too much, play soft music in the background as this will help to mask the ringing sound.

If you rarely attend concerts and are not normally around loud sounds, there shouldn’t be any concern of harm being done to your ears. However, if you listen to loud music or are around loud sounds on a regular basis, over time you may develop tinnitus.

The best way to avoid ringing in your ears after a concert is not to attend concerts. We all know that is not practical and highly unlikely so the next best piece of advice is to wear ear plugs the while attending a concert and stay as far away from the speakers as possible. Taking precautions to protect your ears is the best antidote to developing tinnitus.

My name is Kevin Cordahl and I have been a Tinnitus sufferer for many years. I have spent countless hours reading and studying everything published by top experts in the field of Tinnitus. To learn more about Tinnitus suffering and what can be done to reduce if not eliminate the constant ringing in your ears, check out my website here.

Looking west past the Pan Am Flight 103 Memorial at Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States. Also known as the "Lockerbie Cairn," the memorial is located in a portion of Section 1 just in front of the cemetery’s Old Administration Building.

Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed in flight by a bomb on December 21, 1988, over Lockerbie, Scotland. Libya later admitted that officials of its state security agency planted the bomb in retaliation for various U.S. air strikes against Libya (primarily the 1983 attacks on Tripoli). Eleven of the 270 lives lost were people on the ground. Of the 189 Americans who lost their lives in the attack, 15 were active duty military personnel and 10 were retired military personnel.

President Bill Clinton signed legislation in November 1993 permitting the placement of a memorial to the dead at Arlington National Cemetery. The memorial was financed with private donations, and is a gift of the people of Scotland to the people of the United States. The monument is made of 270 blocks of red sandstone quarried from Corsehill Quarry in Annan, Scotland, about eight miles southeast of Lockerbie. The stones from a cairn, a traditional Scottish monument. Carins take many forms. In this case, the stones are mortared together into a tower that slopes slightly inward as it rises. The cairn rests on six dark grey granite stones shaped like wedges of pie. At its base, the cairn is 7 feet across. It is 10 feet, 6 inches high. Around the base of the cairn, attached to the granite base, are six bronze plaques listing the names of the dead. On the north face of the cairn midway up the face is a bronze dedicatory plaque. The monument was dedicated by President Clinton on November 3, 1995.

She sounds like a road-weary warrior with the passion of Aretha and the intensity of Bonnie Raitt. She combines vocal sensuality and sexuality in equal spades.” -Buffalo News

Kansas City-based blueswoman Kelley Hunt has been defying description for the better part of a decade, and she shows no sign of slowing down. With a commanding, passionate stage presence and superior skills as a vocalist, piano player and songwriter she has earned the respect of critics and fans across North America and Europe.

Kelley makes her way back to the Twin Cities in support of her latest recording, “Gravity Loves You.” This is a remarkable collection of 12 new songs from Kelley’s solo pen and songwriting collaborations with Kansas Poet Laureate Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, as well as songwriters Sarah Hart and Dwight Liles.  “Gravity” weaves its way through roots grooves and arrangements that conjure everything from old-school funk to Philly soul to the intense, Gospel-influenced ballad style that is a Kelley Hunt trademark.

“Kelley Hunt remains an astonishingly well-kept secret on the blues circuit. She’s a powerful singer with a huge reservoir of blues and R&B muscle and can singe your eyebrows with a ballad or full-tilt boogie. She’s also a rollicking pianist…and a superior songwriter with a knack for going for the musical jugular… a swaggering live slab of smokin’ blues, high-energy swing and boogie-woogie.” -City Pages

Born in Kansas City, Hunt’s love for her craft was fine tuned listening to early blues, R&B, roots rock, jazz and Gospel influences – artists like Ruth Brown, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Ann Peebles, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, Charles Brown, Wanda Jackson and a cross section of the New Orleans/St. Louis/KC piano traditions of Professor Longhair, Toots Washington, Johnnie Johnson and Kansas City masters Jay McShann and Mary Lou Williams among others. Before that came the sound of her mother singing jazz and blues – her first musical memories – and the influence of her New Orleans Gospel singer grandmother. Reminders of these very traditional influences are evident in Kelley’s live performances and recordings but the lyrics, soul and passion are all her own. Her career path so far has been a story of fierce independence, incredible will, unassailable cred as a blistering live performer and hard-won accomplishment.

“One of the best new songwriters in the genre.” -Seattle Times
