Q&A: How to read a bird’s band?

Question by Eon: How to read a bird’s band?
I have a yellow napped amazon who is 17 years old, and I am trying to figure out how to read his band. I have checked a few websites but found nothing concrete as of so far.

Items in ( ) are turned 90 degrees clockwise.

His band reads: (WA) JSM (92) 175

I am guessing that the (Wa) Means he was breed in Washington, and the (92) means he was hatched in 1992.

I have yet to figure out the JSM and the 175 though.

Do you have any ideas?

You’re right about the WA and 92. JSM is the breeder code. 175 doesn’t mean anything in particular – it’s just an ID number. It might mean it’s the 175th bird hatched by that breeder – or might not.

JSM is not a code I can find (it’s not listed at http://www.pamperedpeeps.com/bandsbreeders.htm and I don’t know of any bird society using those initials). If you’re really desperate you could try contacting L&M to see if they have any record from that long ago. They’re at http://home.earthlink.net/~lmbird/index.html
