The Indians (8-4) had won eight straight — including the first four on their six-game trip — prior to suffering consecutive defeats to the Los Angeles Angels.

After failing to get a runner past first base while managing one hit in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss, the Indians went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position Wednesday, falling 4-3 in 12 innings.

“I’ll take 4-2 on the West Coast anytime,” manager Manny Acta said. “We had very good pitching. I can’t say enough about our pitching staff so far. They took us all the way to the 12th inning, because we didn’t execute offensively. And that kept us from a victory.”

Cleveland starters finished 12th in the AL last season with a 4.54 ERA, but they’ve compiled a 1.88 ERA over their last 10 outings, including two sharp performances from Masterson (2-0, 1.35 ERA).

The 26-year-old right-hander limited the Mariners to one run and four hits while striking out nine in 6 1/3 innings of Saturday’s 2-1 road win.

“His fastball moves a lot,” Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan told the Indians’ official website. “He’s changing speeds. I think he got Milton (Bradley) on a ball at 96-97 (mph). He’s got a funky arm angle and he’s throwing enough of those sliders to just keep you off that heater.”

Since joining Cleveland in the middle of 2009, however, Masterson has posted a 7.88 ERA while losing all three of his starts against Baltimore (6-5).

Britton (2-0, 0.66) has also enjoyed plenty of success early in 2011.

The 23-year-old left-hander allowed four hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings of a 5-0 win against Texas on Thursday after holding Tampa Bay to three hits and one run in six innings of his major league debut, a 5-1 victory April 3.

“He kept us off the fat part of the bat,” Rangers manager Ron Washington told the Orioles’ official website. “You have to give him credit. He did a good job for a young kid.”

Baltimore, though, has been outscored 29-10 en route to losing four straight since Britton’s last start, including two road meetings with the New York Yankees after Tuesday’s game was postponed.

Outfielder Nick Markakis went 3 for 5 with a home run to help the Orioles take a 5-0 lead Thursday, but Baltimore’s bullpen struggles continued as the Yankees won 6-5 in 10 innings.

Closer Kevin Gregg blew the save and Michael Gonzalez was tagged with the loss. Baltimore relievers have allowed four homers and surrendered 11 runs over 18 2/3 innings during the team’s skid.

“We’re not going to dwell in self-pity,” manager Buck Showalter said. “We pitched well and did a lot of good things out there (Thursday). We just have to keep grinding and move on.”

Markakis is 2 for 13 (.154) lifetime against Masterson while Vladimir Guerrero, batting .367 over a seven-game hitting streak, has recorded only two hits in 12 at-bats versus the Jamaica native.
