A tribute to the 29 men who died November 10, 1975, aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. —- Announcer (0:04): An air and sea search is continuing for possible survivors of the Edmund Fitzgerald, a 729 foot ore carrier, which apparently broke apart and sunk last night on Lake Superior. The ship and its 29-man crew vanished in a storm with 80 mile-an-hour winds and wave heights up to 25 feet. All that has been found is an oil slick and some debris. — song begins at 0:17 — Radio Transmission (3:11): “We last had contact with ‘em, the mate had talked to him … at about 10 minutes after 7, 19:10, and he said he was going along fine and no problem.” — Radio Transmission (3:21): “But it looks from the information that we have that it’s, uh, fairly certain that the, uh, Fitzgerald went down.” — Radio Transmission (4:04): “Uh, no, I didn’t have him, uh, visually, I had him on radar; he was, uh, exactly 10 miles ahead of us. I asked him how he was making out with his problems and he said he was holding his own, but I, uh, lost contact after that.” —- Lyrics: The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they called “Gitche Gumee” The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty, that big ship and true was a bone to be chewed when the Gales of November came early The ship was the pride of the American side coming back …

Having lived in Cleveland and having seen the Fitz come into port many times,You moved me to tears with this great tribute…She was a beautiful ship with a brave crew…….
@TheGrunge619 wow
My wife and I were camped on Whitefish bay this summer. Sitting on the beach we would watch the freighters sail by. We also visited Whitefish point and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. They had this song playing in the museum. The Edmund F. went down not far off Whitefish point.
We spent 2 days at Whitefish point. It is a very beautiful place. I recommend all take a trip there to see the beach, the museum, and the great Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is a wonderful area.
Having served as a sailor in the US Navy, I can relate to the well-described storms out on open water. It’s a heartbreaking song and a fitting tribute to the men who died, survived only by the heartbrokens wives, sons and daughters. I can never hear this song without crying. All I can do is imagine what it must be like to hear that your loved one has died in such a horrible way.
@TheGrunge619 This song has changed many lives and I am glad you decided this song impacted you in a positive way. Give Edmund a high five for me.
@jrodcoach Thats not funny… ‘adding depth’.
Its still hard to listen to this song….Gorden did nothing but give this crew a righteous burial. Great song and video….
this song gets to me every time i hear it. So powerful and yet so touching.
@TheGrunge619 My Youth Pastor almost did himself in when he was 19. He was part of the Mafia and did everything from all kinds of drugs to stealing. He almost blew his brains out one night after he had waded out neck-deep into Lake Michigan with a gat held up to his head.
To skip a long testimony, the next morn. a pastor-out of the blue-knocked on my Youth Pastor’s door and he accepted Christ into his heart on the spot. He now has an ubundant and everlasting joy that only Christ can offer. ^^
This really great! sad but great!
Very fitting tribute. Well done.
…seeing all the names sort of puts there deaths in perspective… this video is beautifully made.
grunge,God saved your life once ,have you given your life to Him ?
TheGrunge619 What a great story for you and your family. It it true that many ” true” heroes are forgotten yet you made a great decision. GOD rest in peace for these fine souls.
GREAT VIDEO!!! I lived in the UP of Michigan near Houghton and had seen Big Fitz a few times and meet some of the crew. When it went down we couldn’t leave the radio hoping for survivors and a bit of shock. Thank you for posting this.
This is the first I see this outstanding video. Grew up on the St. Lawrence Seaway and seeing the “lakers” pass by was big part of our life. Thanks for this poignant, beautifully-done mini-documentary.
Well done.
nice
