A few nice Washington Radio images I found:

DC Loves Dilla – 9th Annual Tribute and Fundraiser (2014)

Some pictures taken at the DC Loves Dilla – 9th Annual Tribute and Fundraiser Concert held at the Howard Theatre in Washington, DC on Thusday, July 17, 2014 by Mary Nichols (DJ Fusion of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast).

James “J Dilla” Yancey was a GRAMMY award-winning producer who inspired millions with his music including artist like Common, Raekwon, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and many many more. On February 10, 2006 just three days after his 32nd birthday, J Dilla passed away after a long time of suffering with Lupus.

Cultural Curator Munch Joseph and HedRush Music created the DC Loves Dilla movement as a way to celebrate J Dilla and honor his career works. "Carrying on the musical legacy of J Dilla for the 9th year and counting is something HedRush and myself look forward to. Personally, it’s my way of paying homage to a great creator as well as doing our part to continually add balance to urban music. Dilla’s music accomplishes that on many levels," says Munch Joseph when asked the motivation behind the Tribute Concert ad Fundraiser.

All pictures taken with a Sony A58 camera with various lenses.

Football Pioneers Headline 6th Annual Shirley Povich Symposium

April 28th, 2016

Check out these Washington Radio images:

Football Pioneers Headline 6th Annual Shirley Povich Symposium
Washington Radio
Image by Merrill College of Journalism Press Releases
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – NFL great Bobby Mitchell, who integrated the Washington Redskins, and Darryl Hill, who did the same for the University of Maryland’s football team, will be featured in the sixth annual Shirley Povich Symposium, Wednesday, November 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center at the University of Maryland.

Mitchell, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, has been celebrated as one of the most significant players in Redskins’ history. Hill, who transferred to Maryland from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1961, was the first African-American to play varsity football at Maryland in 1962, and the first African-American to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"To have these two outstanding individuals participating at this year’s Povich Symposium is a very special moment, symbolizing the 50th anniversary of the integration of both teams," said Kevin Klose, Dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

Mitchell, who retired from the NFL in 1969, became the Redskins’ director of college scouting and assistant general manager. He and his wife Gwen live in Washington. Hill, now a businessman, played briefly in the NFL. He lives in Prince George’s County, MD.

This year’s panel also includes retired NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Maryland Athletic Director Kevin Anderson, film documentarian Theresa Moore, ESPN radio and television commentator Scott Van Pelt, and ESPN and ABC commentator Michael Wilbon, former sports columnist of The Washington Post. Television host Maury Povich, son of the late Washington Post columnist Shirley Povich for whom the symposium is named, will moderate. The event is free and open to the public.

Shirley Povich reported many of the 20th century’s most important sports events during a 75-year Washington Post career that ended with his death in June 1998. His work conveyed his sense that sports often reflected and resulted in wider societal changes.

Typical of Povich’s literary skill and social sensibility was his description of Cleveland Browns star Jim Brown’s 1960 performance against the all-white Redskins: "Jim Brown integrated the Redskins’ goal line with more than deliberate speed, perhaps exceeding the Supreme Court decree. Brown fled the 25 yards like a man in an uncommon hurry, and the Redskins’ goal line, at least, became interracial."

The Philip Merrill College of Journalism is a nationally recognized leader in journalism education, with an acclaimed faculty teaching an innovative curriculum in the professional practice of journalism and scholarly research in journalism.

Live and Streaming Event:

UMTV – The University of Maryland’s cable TV station – will carry the Povich SYMPOSIUM LIVE in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. On campus, UMTV is on channel 38. Comcast customers can watch on Channel 73 in Prince George’s County and on Channel 2 in Montgomery County. On Verizon, the event will be on Channel 40 in both counties.
