Please explain why answer to a trigonometry problem is like that?

April 4th, 2013

Question by John: Please explain why answer to a trigonometry problem is like that?
The Washington Monument is 555 feet higher. If you stand a quarter of a mile or 1320 feet from the base of the monument, find the angle of elevation of its top to the nearest degree.

(the answer is 36 degrees, I don’t know why it is like that, please solve in steps)

Best answer:

Answer by MathsTutor
If you enter the inverse tangent of 555/1320 on the calculator that is the answer it gives you. Why it is 36 degrees exactly would take a lot to explain. But we can start by understanding why the answer should be between 30 degrees and 45 degrees.

555/1320=0.42. This means that to reach the top of the monument from where you stand, you would only go less than half as far up as you need to go along. This number, 0.42 (correct to 2 or 3 decimal places) is actually the gradient of your line of sight as you look at the top of the monument and it is the slope of an imaginary path leading directly to it from where you stand. It means that if you rise 42 feet for every hundred feet you go along, you will be reach the top.

Now, this gradient of the sloping pathway or line of sight implies a particular angle. Getting its exact value is where the tangent function comes in. Without going into the details of how to compute it, we can say that if a path or line of sight went upwards by the same amount as it went horizontally, the angle it made would be 45 degrees to the horizontal. Our path goes upwards by less than that, so it will clearly make an angle of less than 45 degrees.

tan(45)=1 and 45 degrees is the inverse tangent of 1.

Suppose the angle made by your line of sight was 30 degrees. This would mean that the horizontal line of ground level could be a line of symmetry of an equilateral triangle, with the line of sight as one edge and the monument as half of another edge. The other half of the equilateral triangle would be below ground level, an imaginary mirror-image monument reaching the third corner of the triangle. The half of the equilateral triangle above ground level is right-angled, with the line of sight as the hypoteneuse. This distance along the line of sight is logically double the height of the monument in length; that is, 1110 feet. We can now use Pythagoras’ theorem to work out the horizontal distance from where you would have to be standing to the foot of the monument. This turns out to be 961.3 feet (correct to one decimal place). Now we can see that for a line of sight of 30 degrees, its gradient would be 555/961.3: 0.577 to 3 d.p. That is, tan(30 degrees)=0.577.

Since the gradient we have been given (0.42) is less than 0.577, the angle of elevation must be less than 30 degrees. Put another way, since “you” are standing more than 961.3 feet away (ie 1320 feet) your line of sight to the top of the monument must have a less steep angle than it would have at 961.3 feet. So your line of sight is in fact less than 30 degrees. Putting inverse tangent of 555/1320 into a calculator, I get 22.8 degrees. I don’t know where you got 36 from.

What do you think? Answer below!

Draw a triangle. (or imagine it)
It’s a right triangle, and the vertical leg (orient it so that one leg is parallel to the y-axis and the other is parallel to the x-axis) is 555 feet. The horizontal leg is 1320 feet. You are trying to find the angle from the x-axis to the top of the vertical leg. The tangent of that angle is (555/1320). Use calculator to find the inverse tan (arctan) of 555/1320. The answer should be 22.8°.

Question by dune: How will Obama supporters answer this question?
Noticing that Obama told a frustrated supporter, ”We are still the country that billions of people in the world look to and aspire to.”, which is a long way from his apologetic stance on America’s supposed arrogance in the world, will his loyal fans instantly start saying the world looks up to the United States, because Obama said so?

Tan(angle) = opp/adj

tan = 555 / 1320

tan = 0.4204

Now use your calculator to find the inverse tan (2nd function tan)

The answer is 22.8 degrees not 36
