Lummi Island Run for Beach School, Boys & Girls Club and Lummi Island Foundation for Education (2nd Annual)

July 9th, 2014

Lummi Island Run for Beach School, Boys & Girls Club and Lummi Island Foundation for Education (2nd Annual)
Event on 2014-08-09 08:30:00

Bust out your running/walking shoes and experience the magic of the hidden gem of the San Juan Islands!

Maybe you've already experienced the magic of Lummi Island, one of Lonely Planet's "top 10 U.S. travel destinations for 2013". Well, now is your excellent chance to do what you love (run or walk) and support our local children's organizations, the Beach School PTO, the Lummi Island Boys and Girls Club, and the Lummi Island Foundation for Education (LIFE).  These organizations, cooperatively, help the 50+ amazing children of Lummi Island thrive educationally and socially.

The Route:

Might this be the most-waterfront running route in all the land? We sure think so! What we know for sure is that it will take your breath away.  Not only are the San Juan Islands in your line of sight at least 75% of the time, but the very air you're breathing feels somehow magical.  And, you never know, if you're lucky, the J,K, and L superpod of orcas just may make an appearance to offer further encouragement as you run or walk!

Start times:
14-mile: 8:30am
7-mile and 3.5-mile: 9am

The Experience:
20 minutes west of Bellingham, Lummi Island is easily accessible via a 21 car, 7-minute ferry ride.  After the run, browse the Farmer's Market located at the finish line and then head over to the first (since 2008) Reefnet Festival, located on Legoe Bay.  The Reefnet Festival will feature six fabulous musicians, food and beer, artists, and many more festivities for the whole family! You can also grab a quick bite to eat at the island-famous Sauseburger stand, the casually excellent Beach Store Cafe, or a coffee and a pastry at the Taproot Cafe located on the west side of the island.

If you wish to make a weekend of it, there are a variety of vacation rentals available via Lummi Island Vacations ( or on VRBO.  Camping will be available in the Beach School field. Or, of course, there is the luxury stay at the infamous Willows Inn (

The Good You Are Doing:
Unlike other races you may have participated in, this one truly is a benefit for the kids.  We're doing everything humanly possible to keep costs as low as possible, ideally non-existent, so every dollar raised can go to the Beach School PTO, the Boys and Girls Club, and LIFE.  For this reason, this will be an un-timed race, meaning you will have to keep your own race time (those timing chips are so expensive to rent!).

The Blind Boys of Alabama

May 28th, 2014

The Blind Boys of Alabama
Event on 2014-06-28 20:00:00

The exuberant power of gospel music lights up The Grand 1894 Opera House with an always-inspiring performance by The Blind Boys of Alabama.

For 75 years, this beloved vocal quintet has moved audiences worldwide with its heartfelt, joyful singing. Honored by the Grammys, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and the National Endowment for the Arts, their concerts and recordings are “part living history, part concert, all uplifting experience…” (The Washington Post)

The Blind Boys of Alabama are the only long-time gospel group to stay active and make an impact on post-millennial music. Formed in the late 1930s at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in Talladega, the group has harmonized throughout the turbulent twentieth-century and well into the twenty-first century, setting the standard for gospel greatness.

They have enjoyed some of their biggest and most rousing successes in the last ten years, during which they’ve won five Grammys, four Gospel Music Awards, and multiple invitations to sing at the White House. In more recent times, the group has lent its soul-stirring harmonies to a range of cross-genre collaborations including the recordings of Peter Gabriel, Ben Harper, and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.
