Dancing in the Galleries
Jane Dini, Associate Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture

The Art of American Dance is the first major traveling exhibition to explore visual art related to the many forms of American dance. This exhibition of some ninety paintings, prints, sculptures, and photographs examines dance-inspired works from the 1830s to the 1960s—from dance in Native American cultures to ballroom dancing, Jitterbug, swing, modern dance, and others. Artists did not merely represent dance; they were inspired by dance to think about how Americans move through space, share culture, and express themselves through movement.

Both houses, neither standing today, were executed in the 1880s and are exemplars of Gilded Age taste by that era's premier tastemakers and cabinetmakers. We will take a close look at the recently unveiled Worshom-Rockefeller Dressing Room as well as some other exciting new discoveries.

Presidents and Patriots in Marble and Bronze
Thayer Tolles, Marica F. Vilcek Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture

From Hiram Powers to Augustus Saint-Gaudens, sculptors created innovative likenesses of American statesmen and heroes, melding traditional conventions of portraiture with a flair for individuality. Portraits of famous sitters—from Franklin and Washington to Jackson and Lincoln—served the artists and their careers. The process of sculptural representation, posthumous and from life, real and imagined, in marble and bronze, will be explored.
