Students are always excited to go to college. They get to experience new things, learn who they are, and get to be on their own for the first time. Another thing they may be excited about is their college’s random traditions. These traditions can range from good luck superstitions to congratulatory celebrations. No matter what though, there are some pretty strange traditions out there that some colleges have.

The annual Body Art Fashion Show at Brandeis University in Walthman, MA, is not so much about the clothes. Students get together and paint each other and their models using liquid latex paint. The fashion show is held every March and is put together by the Liquid Latex Club. It is one of the campuses most attended event.

Georgetown University in Washington, DC is the place to be on Halloween night. ‘The Exorcist’ is projected outside on either Copley lawn, or Gaston hall. The film is shown after dark until about midnight. Students then make their way to the cemetery to participate in the “Healy Howl”, which means students literally howl at the moon while in the shadow of Healy Hall in the cemetery.

This next tradition is one that just about every college student wishes their campus did. Spree Day at Clark University, MA, is a day that may catch students off guard, but is a wonderful surprise. On a random day during the school year, all classes are sporadically canceled and students can enjoy live bands, and possibly hot air balloons out on the Green.

Students who study organic chemistry may find that around final times there is no way to relieve the stress. Well, Columbia University’s marching band thinks otherwise. The Orgo Night is when the marching band goes into the Butler Library to relieve the stress the night before the organic chemistry final. The band goes into the library at midnight with the sole purpose of disrupting studiers to help relieve everyone’s stress. This tradition is very popular on campus.

Death by Chocolate is more than a dessert at a restaurant; it is also one of Pomona College’s traditions. Pomona College in Claremont, CA normally has a large line of students outside the Edmunds Ballroom for a pre-finals chow down. This tradition has been going on since 1987 and is the reason why some students attend this college. Students can expect to find chocolate covered strawberries, marshmallows, and pretzels, as well as chocolate cheesecake bars, chocolate cream puff, chocolate mousse, and white chocolate.

No matter what college you want to go to, they probably have all sorts of fun traditions. Some may not make sense, but as long as you are having fun, that’s what matters. Ok, as long as you are having fun and getting an education that’s what matters. If you have ever thought about not going to college, think of everything that you could miss out on. This includes fun traditions like these, and your degree. Having an education is important, but no one said you couldn’t have fun doing it. Even some online colleges have their own wacky traditions.

The Mayor’s College Fair Provides Tuition Assistance for Washington D.C. Schools

May 12th, 2012

The Mayor’s College Fair

The Mayor’s College Fair brings together a variety of programs available for the Washington D.C. schools and their students preparing for college tuition costs. This event takes place on September 15, 2006 and provides information about a variety of college tuition assistantship programs. Students in the Washington D.C. schools are encouraged to attend the Mayor’s College Fair in order to learn more about the special programs open to them as Washington D.C. students.

The Mayor’s College Fair is being held for the first time this year as part of the Washington D.C. schools’ effort to coordinate the various assistantships available to graduating seniors as well as provide a public forum for discussing and disseminating this information. Hopefully, this will become an annual event at the beginning of each school year as a new class of seniors looks forward to the joys and burdens of financing a college education. This meeting will hopefully provide a structure for students in Washington D.C. schools seeking guidance about financial aid programs and packages available for Washington D.C. students.

The D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program

One program that has promised great potential in aiding Washington D.C. school graduates pay for college is the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program (DCTAGP). This program has been going on since 2000 and provided over $ 100 million towards the education costs of DC residents attending college. This program covers the difference between instate and out of state tuition, up to $ 10,000 per year for qualified applicants. The grant can be extended over six years at any public college or university nationwide. In addition, there are limited funds available for students attending private colleges in the Washington D.C. area as well as two year community colleges nationwide.

The D.C. Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program

The D.C. Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program (DCLEAP) provides $ 1500 annually to those Washington D.C. school residents who show financial need. This award can be used at any accredited university nationwide. These funds are intended to be used to fill the gaps in a student’s financial aid package and cover many of the costs other than tuition that many students face when paying for books, housing, etc. This program is designed to help Washington D.C. school residents to find the extra help that they need to make ends meet while in college.

The D.C. Adoption Scholarship Program

The DC Adoption Scholarship (DCAS) provides up to $ 10,000 a year for post-high school education and training of District of Columbia children who were adopted through DC’s Child and Family Services Agency, and/or children who lost one or both parents in the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. These funds are meant to help lower the financial burden to those who lost their parents due to the terrorist attacks and now must take the burden of paying for college on themselves. The grants are targeted toward those members of the community most affected by the attacks as well as keeping community awareness high about the continued impact that the attacks have had on the United States.

Is it legal to play old Mercury Radio Theater show recordings on a college internet radio station?

April 18th, 2012

Question by : Is it legal to play old Mercury Radio Theater show recordings on a college internet radio station?
I would like to start a weekly radio show on my college’s internet radio station with old recordings of the Mercury Theater shows. Does anyone know if that would violate copyright laws (or other applicable law relating to radio broadcast)?

Thanks for your help!

Answer by bcnu
Several issues to slice at: whether you need a copyright license for non-profit use in an educational institution, whether it would be a different answer if the “channel” were only accessible to students at the college, whether the original works are copyrighted, and (if so) when do they expire.

The US Copyright law grants a limited exemption for certain educational uses. Read 17 USC s. 110 to see if your proposed use falls under one of them. If not, you may be able to obtain an inexpensive license from the copyright owners (typically the producers and their successor owners).

The Mercury Theater recordings were originally recorded prior to 1973, so they are not covered by any federal copyright. However, state laws prohibit unauthorized publication of sound recordings, so could still find yourself sued for copyright infringement in, say, Massachusetts. They would have to prove, among other things, that you “copied” the recording “without consent” and for the purpose of “profit” from a public performance, or to “sell, rent or transport” any unauthorized copy.

Under many state copyright laws, the copyright NEVER expires. These laws will remain in effect until they are preempted by the federal copyright law in 2067, making all such works “public domain”, i.e., no longer covered by any copyright in the USA.
