AIA Guide to the Architecture of Washington, D.C. Reviews

September 17th, 2011

AIA Guide to the Architecture of Washington, D.C.

The fourth edition of the venerable AIA guide to Washington’s architecture offers tourists, residents, and architecture aficionados insights into nearly 400 of the city’s most important architectural landmarks, organized into 19 discrete tours. All entries carried over from the previous edition, published in 1994, have been thoroughly rewritten, and scores of entries have been added. This edition includes notable new structures such as the National Museum of the American Indian, as well as the classics that epitomize the city—the White House, the Capitol, Union Station—plus a number of private structures that are sometimes overlooked, including houses designed by Walter Gropius and Richard Neutra.

G. Martin Moeller Jr. blends informed, concise descriptions with lively commentary on each landmark, revealing often surprising details of the building’s history and design. Every entry is accompanied by a photograph and includes the structure’s location, the names of the architects and designers responsible for the building and any major alterations, and the corresponding dates of completion. Each entry is keyed to a new, easy-to-read map at the beginning of the tour.

From the imposing monuments of Capitol Hill and the Mall to the pastoral suburban enclaves of Foxhall and Cleveland Park, and from small memorials to vast commercial and institutional complexes, this guide shows us a Washington that is at once excitingly fresh and comfortably familiar.

Q&A: EXTENDED STAY HOTEL WASHINGTON, D.C.?

August 7th, 2011

Question by .: EXTENDED STAY HOTEL WASHINGTON, D.C.?
I would like to know whether or not there are ExtendedStay Hotels in Northwest, D.C. or any hotels similar to it (hotels designed for long-term stay). It would also be helpful if you could tell me the monthly rates.

I’d prefer a hotel near the city or the suburb, or just somewhere that is not boring and it is easy to get around without a car. Nothing too expensive (around $ 800 per month).

Best answer:

Answer by Kim K
I own property in NW DC and I can tell you that you will not find anything that cheap in NW let alone DC for that price unless you plan on staying in a crime ridden area. Hotels are going for $ 200+ a night and thats the basics. Hell my mortgage would be about $ 3,400 if I didnt rent it out. The DMV area is pretty functional as far as transit is concerned so if you desire to stay in surrounding vicinities like bethesda or some part of pg county right outside the city, you should do well. Bethesda is a bit expensive though, its the same pricing as in DC. Trains tend to shut down a bit earlier than places like New York. I suggest looking into PG county for short term rentals. PG county is a bit bad now, but its close to DC and you can take a train. Other than that, your stakes are just too low.

Q&A: What’s the best hotel near Washington, D.C. that is loacted within walking distance of the Metro?

July 14th, 2011
Hotel in Washington
by wallyg

Question by Matthew R: What’s the best hotel near Washington, D.C. that is loacted within walking distance of the Metro?
I do not want it in the city, but rather in one of the suburbs. I am going to have 15 students ages 12-15 with me.

Best answer:

Answer by julie travelcaster
There are many. Most chains have hotels within walking distance of Metro. I won’t give you a single hotel, but say that hotels in the neighborhoods of Rosslyn, Ballston, and Crystal City in Arlington are almost certainly on metro – and there are a great variety of them.

If you want specific hotels, there is the Marriott twin bridges in Rossly, various hotels in the neighborhood of Iwo Jima, including a Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn and Comfort Inn in Ballston, and the Hotel Americana (Budget) in Crystal City, as well as any chain you might like (Radisson, Crown Plaza, Mariott, Sheraton).

Why not in the city, though. There is a great hotel downtown, the Hotel Harrington, that is set up ideally for hosting groups of young people. It’s in the middle of the tourist core, but not too close to clubbing opportunities, the neighborhood is a good, safe one, and the mall is only four blocks away! Plus it is a basic, clean, budget hotel!

How did I pick up WJCU on my crystal radio if its in Cleveland and I’m around Washington D.C.?

July 13th, 2011

Question by Boredom drives me slowly insane: How did I pick up WJCU on my crystal radio if its in Cleveland and I’m around Washington D.C.?
My radio is not very fancy or anything, just a 24×24 inch loop antenna with 20 turns tuned by a single gang variable capacitor. It was daytime when I picked it up and I was surrounded by hills in every direction. Normally I can only pick up WMAL and some Spanish station. I’m wondering if they also provide broadcasts for the Spanish station?

Best answer:

Answer by vgordon_90
AM radio signals are strange animals. They can travel extensive distances unless blocked by buildings or atmospheric conditions.
You are probably picking up the signal at some good times during the day and the weather is probably good.
You may find that with bad weather, or colder conditions, the signal may disappear or grow faint.

Frommer’s Washington D.C. with Kids (Frommer’s With Kids)

LET FROMMER’S SHOW YOU WHERE YOUR KIDS CAN:

  • Take a simulated orbital flight

  • Dress like Thomas Jefferson

  • Ogle the Hope Diamond

  • Pet a horseshoe crab

  • Touch a moon rock

  • Crawl through a replica of an African termites’ mound

  • See money being made

PLUS INVALUABLE TRAVEL TIPS:

  • Age ranges for each sight and activity

  • Hotels that offer cribs and rollaway beds

  • A complete rundown on restaurants with kids’ menus

  • Shopping for everything from baby booties to comic books

  • Words of wisdom on safety in Washington, D.C.

  • How to have a good time without breaking the bank

Over the years, millions of kids have been dragged to Washington to see the grand edifices and historic monuments of our country’s capital, and most of those millions have returned home without the desire to ever see a statue, senator, or Supreme anything ever again. But it doesn’t have to be like that. Beth Rubin not only knows Washington D.C. backwards and forwards, she knows kids, too, and that makes for a very good guidebook. Well organized, with a variety of useful information on family hotels, restaurants, shopping, and entertainment, this is a full-service guide with a family focus. Aside from such necessities as which hotels offer cribs and rollaway beds, Rubin knows where your children can take simulated orbital flights, dine with U.S. representatives, touch a moon rock, crawl through an African termite mound replica, pet a horseshoe crab, or go swimming, biking, or in-line skating. It’ll take the family Washington trip to new heights.
