Endnotes: David Foster Wallace (BBC Documentary)

November 3rd, 2011

Professor Geoff Ward discusses the life and works of David Foster Wallace “When David Foster Wallace hanged himself in 2008, at the age of 46, he was considered by many to be the most gifted and linguistically exuberant American novelist and short story writer of his generation. His books include the 1000-page Infinite Jest, a novel of grand ambition and stylistic experiment that came complete with 388 endnotes. (Footnotes, digressions, constant second guessing of every thought are features of Wallace’s signature style). In April The Pale King, Wallace’s final, unfinished novel will be published. Few literary novels have been more eagerly anticipated in recent years. Its great subject is Boredom. Wallace set himself big challenges. Infinite Jest attacked the entertainment industry while trying to entertain and The Pale King engages with boredom as a path toward transcendence. This Sunday Feature is presented by Professor Geoff Ward, author of a literary history of America. He, like many, was convinced Wallace would be the preeminent American writer to reckon with in the years ahead, and was shocked by his tragic early death. He assesses Wallace’s legacy, themes and preoccupations, talking to the precursor Wallace admired most, Don DeLillo, and to friends, collaborators and contemporaries such as Mark Costello and Rick Moody. In the company of the writer’s sister, Amy Wallace, Ward travels to the Midwest of America where the writer grew up, and considers the impact of

A special protégé of the legendary Itzhak Perlman, the dynamic 22-year-old violin virtuoso Hahn-Bin embodies the renaissance of classical music, fusing his highly evocative repertoire with pop performance art in the “extraordinary, intelligent and beautiful” (The Washington Post) concerts of his “inspired, innovative and bracing” (The New York Times) programs. Born in Seoul, Hahn-Bin made his international debut at age twelve at the 42nd Grammy Awards in an event honoring Isaac Stern. Following a decade under the tutelage of Itzhak Perlman at The Juilliard School, Hahn-Bin made his critically-acclaimed debut in 2009 at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall as the recipient of the Peter Marino Concert Prize, following his First Prize win at the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions. This season, Hahn-Bin returns to Carnegie Hall, performing the world premiere of “Still Life” for Violin and Orchestra, written by Christopher Cerrone and commissioned for Hahn-Bin by the New York Youth Symphony. The tour of his new recital project “The Five Poisons” will include performances in New York at the Rubin Museum of Art, and in Berlin at the Konzerthaus. Exhibition Showcases Atmospheric Perspectives Through The Mindset Of International Watercolor Artist David B. Goldstein

Exhibition Showcases Atmospheric Perspectives Through The Mindset Of International Watercolor Artist David B. Goldstein

Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV – Internationally recognized watercolor artist, David B. Goldstein, recently back from living in Hong Kong, reveals the largest collection of his artwork in one location. “Atmospheric Perspectives” is at the Washington Technology Park in Chantilly, Virginia from now until early April.

Of the forty-five paintings on display, some have been in juried exhibitions, some were on display in Asia, some are being shown for the first time and some are just favorites. What they all have in common is they attempt to capture the feeling of a place. The subjects for this exhibition span the globe, but focus on water related themes. They highlight Goldstein’s passion to explore how our surroundings and nature can be merged through the medium of watercolor. “I’m particularly fascinated by water and how it reflects color and light. I love to discover connections and blend objects going beyond their natural outlines to form larger shapes,” says David. “I strive to show the beauty of the world that I see and ‘how things could be’ with some enhancement.”

The Washington Technology Park is located near Dulles International Airport, but through this exhibit, you will not have to get on a plane to experience spots in Kyoto, Hanoi, Krabi, Sydney, Hong Kong, St. John, New York, or nearby Ocean City. David, whose work is admired for its subject matter which evokes a feeling of escape and adventure, has traveled the world to soak up the scenery and sensations of the most stunning places. The renowned artist comments that “art should be accessible and something you want to hang on your wall because it reminds you of your favorite experiences or an experience you want to have.”

The title “Atmospheric Perspectives” is a play on words. Atmospheric perspective, otherwise known as “aerial perspective” describes the illusion of depth where distant objects appear to be bluer and have less contrast. “Although this is a concept that I utilize to simulate distance, what is meant by the heading is simply that I strive to paint how a place feels. I try to capture the intangibles of the atmosphere and express my own perspectives of what it’s like to be somewhere special”, explains Goldstein.

David’s style has been described as “representational” with a “controlled spontaneity”. His compelling images register as emotional and geographic reference points in the minds and hearts of viewers. By invitation from the Arts Council of Fairfax as part of their “Art in the Workplace” program, this exhibit is part of a greater project to foster creativity and innovation in the workplace. More information about this program can be obtained by contacting John Dusenberry at (703) 642-0862 x6.

About the Exhibition:
The works of internationally recognized watercolor artist, David B. Goldstein, will be on display at The Washington Technology Park, 15000 Conference Center Drive, Chantilly Virginia, 20151. About David B. Goldstein:
David is a native of New York and spends his time both there and in Virginia. He has exhibited in New York City, Washington D.C., Los Angeles and Rome and Hong Kong. David is largely self taught, but has studied in the US with several prominent watercolorists and has studied Chinese painting in the style of the Lingnan School at the Hong Kong Art School. David has been quoted on ArtistNetwork.com for his unique techniques and his shows have been described in the South China Morning Post, Where, Hong Kong Magazine, The Peak Magazine, Orientations, RTHK Radio 3, The Jewish Times of Asia among others.
