AN EXTRAORDINARY PAYNE: As he prepares to record their first CD, Harlem-born Clif Payne continues to established himself as one of the jazz globe's many unique vocalists. ìClif Payne is a lush tenor bursting with soaring gospel melismas.î Los Angeles instances, Don Heckman "An impressive, great singer!" Emilio Castillo, Tower of Power "i prefer your sound!," Fred Hersch, jazz pianist, Grammy nominee "Clif is a separate, phenomenal singer! A real pro!" Peter Cuschieri, Mgr., Angelica's Concert Venue YOUR HOUSE OF PAYNE: Clif is the son of James "Buddy" Payne, reedsman aided by the Lionel Hampton, Lucky Millinder and Fletcher Henderson bands of Harlem Renaissance, 1920s-1950s. Clif's mom, Aline, educated by Tuskegee legendries James Weldon Johnson and William Dawson, ended up being an ensemble vocalist who once backed Nat ìKingî Cole. WEST COAST PAYNE: Clif's musical ascent began when Bobby McFerrin featured Clif as a particular guest vocalist in bay area. Since that time, Clif has performed at San Francisco's Great United states Music Hall, Yoshi's, western Hollywood's Troubadour and LA's Jazz Bakery. He's opened for Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Dionne Warwick and has done with Tower of Power. His recordings consist of commercials & cds by Dave Koz and jazz fushionists Hiroshima. As a guitarist, Clif has supported deep minimal, Wolfman Jack, Danny Gans and former Platters lead vocalist Sonny Turner.

THE VOCALS OF PAYNE: first of all, Clif Payne is a vocalist. And, as a vocalist, Clif effortlessly paints a colorful soundscape in which the hues of jazz, gospel and R&B converge. His mastery of words, interpretation, improvisation, phrasing and tone highlight the technical aspects of their sound without having to sacrifice its psychological depth–all while using us on melodic excursions of creative phrase. "SAANG, PAYNE!" . . . is really what people shouted back-in-the-day as soon as the teen-aged Clif ended up being a featured vocalist in his church choir. ìBRING ON PAYNE!î . . . is exactly how he's introduced these days.
