Getting To Leavenworth, Washington

Leavenworth, Washington is located on U.S. Highway 2 in the central part of Washington State.  It is located twenty-two miles northwest of Wenatchee and thirty-five miles east of Stevens pass.  Seattle is the nearest large city, 135 miles way to the west, and it can be reached by car in about 2.5 hours.  Despite its location, Leavenworth is one of the state’s most popular tourist destinations. 

Leavenworth is at the halfway point of the cascade loop, which is a beautiful drive than can be done from the Seattle area by taking U.S. Route 2 east from Monroe.  Route 2 follows the Skykomish River for most of the way up to Stevens Pass, which has an elevation of 4,061 feet.  The Skykomish River is popular for fishing, rafting, camping, and there are several good swimming spots.  About fifteen miles east of Stevens Pass, Route 2 follows the picks up the Wenatchee River and follows it through scenic Tumwater Canyon and down into Leavenworth

Five miles east of Leavenworth is the junction of Route 2 and U.S. Route 97.  Take Route 97 southbound to Cle Elum, which is a pleasant stop near the Yakima River.  Near Cle Elum, drivers can merge with Interstate 90.  Snoqualmie Pass is located thirty miles west of Cle Elum at an elevation of 3,022 feet.  Seattle is an additional fifty-three miles west of Snoqualmie Pass.  The Cascade Loop has great opportunities for hiking and rock-climbing and there are several scenic waterfalls.  The loop can be accomplished in either directions. 

From the north, Leavenworth can also be reached on State Route 209, also known as the “Chumstick Highway”, which is an alternate route to Route 2 if coming from Lake Wenatchee or the city of Plain.  Passenger train service is now again available to Leavenworth.  Amtrak’s Icicle Station is now open in Leavenworth for service and is a stop along routes between Seattle and Chicago. 

If traveling to Leavenworth from out of the area, the nearest commercial airport to Leavenworth is Wenatchee’s Pangborn Memorial Airport, which is about twenty-five miles east.  Horizon Air services Wenatchee’s Airport.
