The Great Old Radio Shows – The Burns and Allen Show – Success Finds George & Gracie

George and Gracie first inherited their old radio show in 1934. For two years they had made regular appearances on The Guy Lombardo Show, but when Lombardo moved from CBS to NBC, George and Gracie stayed and took over the show. The show was named The Adventures of Gracie Allen until September 30, 1936 when the show’s name was changed to The Burns and Allen Show.

The problem with a new radio show, as many vaudevillians discovered, was the constant need for new and fresh material. An act could exist for years in vaudeville with 60 minutes of material. On the radio the same audience would be back week after week.

George later summed it up nicely: “On one show we had done half our act; we still had half an act left and twenty years to fill.” The show was a hit. George explained why: “Women understood Gracie. Men thought they were married to her.

And everyone knew someone just like her.”

When it came to the radio, and later television, Gracie suffered stage fright. The first year they were on the air, Gracie refused to have a studio audience, even insisting the windows to the studio be blocked. When she finally did consent to allow an audience in, the stage crew installed footlights on the stage which brightened the stage and darkened the audience. The audience was requested not to laugh or applaud. They even gave Gracie an oversized microphone she could hide behind.

While Gracie was content to merely act, George was the creative force behind the scenes. His sense of rhythm was spot on and he simply knew what was funny and what was best for Gracie.

The show remained in New York City for the next five years.

In 1939, however, the movies were calling George and Gracie and they made the move to Hollywood.

Interestingly, for the first eight years of the show George and Gracie did not play a married couple. Instead, the show revolved around the romantic escapades of each of them individually. These flirtation routines had been the backbone of their vaudeville act.

When the show started slipping in the ratings, George knew they were doing something wrong. After giving it a great deal of thought, he decided that he and Gracie were too old to be playing young single people. After all, they had been married in real life since 1926 – some 16 years!

One night while laying in bed, he reportedly woke Gracie up and told her that he was changing the format of the show. He wanted them to play themselves, as a married couple. One night in 1942, George simply introduced the show by stating that he and Gracie had been married in real life for 16 years, they had two wonderful children, and from then on the show was going to be about them as a married couple.

By the way, I cannot find a copy of that episode, nor do I know the exact date – only that it happened before October, 1942. If you happen to have a copy of this old time radio episode, or have any additional information, please let me know.

Once the transition was made on the air, the ratings took off again, and George and Gracie’s old radio show became one of the favorites of all the old time radio shows. In fact it was popular for another decade until it moved to television.

Unlike other of the great old radio shows, Burns and Allen did not appear simultaneously on TV and Radio. Gracie did not want the commitment of doing both.

George would later reflect that the radio shows were the favorite part of his career. He said that “Radio was a place where performers who could do nothing but talk, could talk.”

If you would like to hear several selections of The Burns and Allen old radio show, you will find several of them on my blog.

5 Easy Ways To Get Great Internet Radio Guests Part 1- Finding Guests

5 Easy Ways To Get Great Internet Radio Guests Part 1- Finding Guests

You’ve got a great radio show, but you want to make it even better. How do you find even more great guests, and how do you contact them when you do? This is part 1 of a 3 part series on finding and contacting potential guests for your internet radio show. (Or any other interview.)

You know the types of subjects you and your audience want to hear about. Use Google (or your favorite search engine) to find out what, and more importantly who, is hot in that field.

The great thing about finding guests on Blogtalk is that you can hear what interviewing that person is like. You also know they do Blogtalk interviews, and can usually find a link to their website. This makes contacting them even easier.

]]>

Authors are always wanting to share their latest book with a larger audience. Look in your local bookstore for the new books coming out in your subject. You can also go to Amazon.com for great authors. They have a lot of great books (and potential guests) that haven’t gotten into the mainstream bookstores yet. This will make them even more eager to find an audience.

Joining a few active groups on social media sites can be a gold mine. Most hosts like to brag (and with good reason) about their best interviews, and most don’t mind sharing their best guests. After all, if you like someone, you want them to do well, and helping them find more exposure is good for everyone. You can even promote your favorite guests and win brownie points from them and the other hosts both!

Put a survey on your website or just ask for emails. Ask your audience who they would like to hear on you show. Since it is all about your audience, why not find out what they want? They may know about people you’ve never heard of, or remind you about someone you’ve always wondered about, too. When you contact the guest, you can honestly say your audience asked for them by name! It’s a great way to get your foot in the door.

This is a site specifically designed to connect radio hosts and guests. Put your profile up and guests will contact you. Go through the guest profiles and look for your target subjects. They are organized by the same categories as Blogtalk, so it is easy to find just the right guest.

Web Radio Resource is the one stop Free site for connecting Web Radio Hosts and Industry Experts worldwide. Are you both a Guest and a Host? No problem. You can have up to 6 Free basic profiles of your choice! Come make your Free Host or Guest Profile Today! http://www.webradioresource.com

Great Reasons For Relocating To The Pacific Northwest

August 10th, 2011

Great Reasons For Relocating To The Pacific Northwest

It used to be that when people would hear Washington, they would automatically think of the nation’s capital. Nowadays, Washington makes people think of the Pacific Northwest and all that region of the country has to offer. If you are thinking about relocating and your decision is not driven strictly by an employment offer, you have plenty of choices. Washington State provides a variety of benefits that range from financial to cultural to health. The area is often thought of as being ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to certain trends, but since it is not a major city with an overwhelming population size, it retains that small town feeling that people often crave. You can live in a place with a sense of community that is also forward-moving. First, you should know there are plenty of homes available in Washington State and many have undergone residential remodeling or residential additions. You can find an existing home that is modern and comfortable for a very reasonable price.

The Emerald City may be best known for its sense of community. While it is a cutting edge city with a reputation for being a little quirky, it is also a town where people can feel at home. People who live in the Pacific Northwest are usually friendly and welcoming, especially to those who have found they have a hard time fitting in elsewhere. While the city is not as crazy as other popular tourist destinations, it is a great destination for artists and free-thinkers who also have a more conventional side. The city is filled with young business professionals who intend to start a family in a safe, comfortable location.

Washington State and most of the Pacific Northwest was at the forefront of the green movement and continues to pride itself on its environmentally gentle attitude. While many of the ideas that are first tried in the area do not become nationwide solutions for conservation, the people in the Washington community are willing to give new ideas a chance. They take great pride in their natural surroundings and they work hard to protect their environment. While you may think that a lot of the green movement is about advertising and marketing and if you live in a big city it may be tough to see the effects of conserving, those in the Pacific Northwest see the impact of caring for the earth.

The region also has a strong art and cultural community. There are plenty of cities that offer museums and performing arts venues, but the Emerald City is one of those unique locations that actually put itself on the map because of its cultural scene. In the 1990′s, when grunge music was all the rage, attention was paid to the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, where a great deal of these bands got their starts.

And finally, if for no other reason to consider the Emerald City, coffee drinkers will feel as if they have found their personal nirvana. Coffee may not be a reason to relocate to a city, but if you enjoy the drink, knowing you are surrounded by some of the best cafes in the country will certainly help. Coffee is not just a drink, it is a culture and if you love the idea of spending lazy mornings sipping coffee, reading the paper and visiting with friends, this might be the city for you.

What’s the secret to sounding great as a DJ on online radio?

March 9th, 2011

What’s the secret to sounding great as a DJ on online radio?

The arrival of radio on the internet has meant that many more stations are now being heard. Competition is in some respects fierce.

Content, as they say, is king. As an online radio presenter, you’ve got to be the best of the best. But how do the top radio presenters sound so natural and yet interesting. What’s their secret? Is it just talent?

The answer is hard work and yes a bit of talent. Behind the scenes preparation has to be done. Preparation behind the scenes is the key. Chris Evans, the UK’s Radio 2 national breakfast DJ, believes every link needs has to have essentials such as a beginning, a middle and an end.

But preparing links in a middle of the show is hard. Imagine a ticking clock, a microphone staring at you and your station manager on the other end of his radio.

So here’s the key. Write down links before the show is going out. They don’t have to be fully scripted but can just be a few ad lib notes. This is much easier to do then making when something up on the spot.

If you are stuck for link ideas, just look around you. Talk about your personal life in general. This could be about going to school or busy roads near you. But what content do you put into your links? Look around you, talk about personal life. Observation will help produce really good content for links.

The secret to sounding like a pro as an online radio DJ, preparation.

Tim trained as a journalist and has spent most of his career in Government communications.

Tim’s has always loved radio as a medium and still volunteers as a presenter at online radio station Radio Wey which is broadcast:

Q&A: How can we reduce the size of government without causing another great depression?

February 6th, 2011

Question by OwlBear: How can we reduce the size of government without causing another great depression?
The government has grown too big and needs to be reduced in order to stop the spiraling deficit. But how can this be done without causing another great depression?

The government is the largest employer in the US, millions of people are employed by it. When its size is reduced by any significant amount, people must be laid off and spending must also be reduced.

However, with the government laying so many people off, two things will happen; the tax revenue the government receives from their salaries will be eliminated, and those newly unemployed people will sharply reduce their spending. With less taxes coming in, the government would have to cut spending even more, further reducing its workforce and spending. With hundreds of thousands of newly unemployed people sharply reducing their spending, businesses will have to start laying people off to remain profitable, resulting in further reduced spending and reduced tax revenues.

The other part of the problem is cutting government spending. Unlike the public, the government spends its money almost entirely on US goods and services. Cutting that spending will reduce the business that government contractors receive, forcing them to lay off a lot of people, resulting in reduces tax revenue (requiring further reductions in spending to prevent greater deficit spending) and still lower levels of public spending.

In a nutshell, cutting the government hurts the economy, which causes further government cuts to be required in order to stay ahead of the deficit, which further hurts the economy, and on and on in a vicious cycle. Is there a way to bypass this, or are we going to have to tighten our belts, grit our teeth and make do until the economy eventually resets itself and recovers…if it ever does?

Getting Your Music Heard, Online Radio A Great Resource For Independent Musicians

January 22nd, 2011

Getting Your Music Heard, Online Radio A Great Resource For Independent Musicians

There are millions of independent musicians out there. You may be one of them—perhaps having just written your first song, recorded on a computer in your garage or basement. Perhaps you’ve been hitting up bars, clubs, or coffee shops for gigs in your area. You could have even recorded your first full-length CD. Whatever stage you are in the process of making a name for yourself, there is an important resource out there for you. This resource is the online radio station.

Most of the time, these online radio stations are entirely free to listeners. For this reason, it will only take a little push to get potential fans to take a listen. These stations are looking for listeners just as much as you are, and therefore should be willing to work with you to achieve your goals, as you help them achieve theirs. So what can you do to get your name out through the online radio circuit? There are a few steps you can take.

The first step, of course, is to record your music. There are a variety of ways to do this, depending on how much money you want to put into it and how much expertise you hold. If you have at least a bit of computer savvy, there are effective ways you can record original music at home on your computer. There are plenty of sites and tutorials on the internet you can use to help this process. If you don’t have the proper equipment, or want a very quality recording, however, you can find local recording studios that will help you for a price.

Once you have your music recorded, it is ready for mastering. This is a post-recording process that will give your music a professional finish and sound. Though your music may have great quality to it without mastering, it can offer a lot to the sound. It is not absolutely necessary, but certainly worth checking out.

Searching out online radio stations is easy using your favorite search engine. Some stations obviously have preference for genre of music, or cater to a particular geographical area. You can use your judgment to decide which stations to which you would like to submit your music. Once you find these stations, follow the procedures posted on the site to submit your music, and wait for a response. If you make the cut, your music will be available the entire internet community.

Once your music is being played on an internet radio station (or a variety of internet radio stations), it is up to you to bring more listeners to that station. This will, consequently, bring more listeners to your music. It is important to not just advertise your own music, however. All independent music is worth supporting. Establishing yourself in and embracing the independent music community will allow you to meet other musicians, network, and be a part of something really great. So spreading the word about these stations, and other musicians as well as yourself can get you exposure, as well as help the world of independent music. If you would like more information, or are looking for a great online radio station to play your music, visit www.WDAW.com today.
