For the first time, Lin Manual-Miranda’s show In the Heights hits the Fox Theater for a six-day run during its first ever national tour. The show is the brainchild of the former star, who finished performing as the lead Usnavi in February, making time to focus on future moves for the play (like working on a film deal with Universal Pictures).
In the Heights was the first work from Miranda, who wrote the story and score while at Wesleyan University studying theater. Now the Latin mixer, dancer and actor is gearing up for opportunities that he never dreamed possible after seeing Rent at 17 and becoming instantly inspired. Born and raised in the Washington Heights district just north of Manhattan, Miranda grew up on a fusion of Broadway show tunes and hip-hop beats, enabling the prospective lawyer to throw away his father’s dreams and focus on theater. Miranda’s found that obsession once he saw Rent, and hasn’t looked back since.
“I suddenly saw this show that was about how I pictured my life in five or 10 years,” he says to Access Atlanta about the impact that Rent had on his future career. “It really spoke to me on a gut level. That was why I stopped being in musicals and started writing musicals.” Â The result was In the Heights, his first ever effort writing the music, lyrics and story in a musical format that has earned him critical and commercial acclaim, along with a Tony Award.
From where In the Heights is today, it might be difficult to image a time when this Latin fusion dance movement wasn’t everywhere. Rather, it took years for the former college play to get to Broadway and eventually see a national tour. With the help from Rent producers Jill Furman and Kevin McCollum, In the Heights debuted on Broadway just two years ago and eventually picked up that year’s Tony Awards biggest honor – Best New Musical – while Miranda won an award for his score.
Finding inspiration for the “heights” native was simple, having grown up in the now legendary 10-block radius his entire life. “I know Washington Heights backwards and forwards. So it felt like a very natural setting for this show,” he says to Boston.com. Even with all the fame, the 30-year-old hasn’t been able to leave the area that garnered him such attention – he still lives in the “heights” with his fiancé, another Washington Heights native, and just three blocks from his childhood home.
In the Heights follows a group of neighborhood friends who are trying to survive in a world that doesn’t really allow for big dreams. The story combines hip-hop, salsa, meringue and other Latin flavors in both music and dance, but one thing it doesn’t incorporate is a life of crime and drugs most associate with the area. While Miranda’s structured childhood wasn’t anything like how Washington Heights is portrayed in the news, it doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen.
For Miranda, he wanted to incorporate his own perspective into the story of this neighborhood – and negativity wasn’t a direction he was willing to take. “[News stories aren't] specific to our neighborhood. And it wasn’t my experience. The only things I know about drug dealings are from rap music,” Miranda says to Boston.com. Even without that stereotype, Miranda’s world played out on stage is still full of fascinating stories and music.

In the Heights made its debut on Broadway in March 2008 to rave reviews from both critics and theater-goers. Directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the story revolves around three days in the Washington Heights area of New York City. It is billed as a high-energy show and is especially noted for its musical score that takes an entirely different and some would say more “hip” approach with predominantly hip-hop tunes and choreographed dance moves.

Each character confronts his or her own issues throughout the course of the show and along the way, patrons are treated to an array of uplifting songs like “Sunrise,” “In the Heights” and “When You’re Home.”
