Internet Radio Hardware: So Many Choices

Internet Radio Hardware: So Many Choices

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of choices out there today when it comes to internet radio hardware. You can buy units that stay in your car or they even have units now that detach from your car and can be played from a mobile docking center. The new technology boom has pushed internet radio hardware to the extreme, and consumers are reaping the benefits.

You see, with all of this new technology there comes extreme competition between manufacturers. This increases the quality while simultaneously driving down the price of new technologies such as tablet computers and internet radio hardware. Notice that once a new product comes out it is in such high demand that people will pay double the retail price, but after a couple of weeks things cool off and a competitor comes out with a lower costing technology that just has a different logo on it. You don’t always have to buy right away; in fact, it is quite illogical to buy a product right when it comes out. If you can just wait a few weeks the price will drop. This holds true with internet radio hardware

As a consumer there is no reason why you shouldn’t be taking advantage of this awesome technological market that is spawned by such a perfect storm of supply and demand. Once technology hits its new peak then the prices will stabilize and the market will weed out the competition. In laymen’s terms, buy now while the market is so competitive and you’ll be glad you did in six months.

Internet Radio and Other Music Awards

Singers and bands have loyal fans that stick with them through the thick and thin of their music careers. Annual music awards are a time for the fans to vote for their favorite musicians and give praise for their musical talents. Singers and bands not only get recognition and some type of fancy award, but their careers are usually increased in ratings. There are genre specific music awards, general awards, and online awards. Here is a look at an Internet radio awards and some other music awards.

Perhaps the most well known awards for music are the Grammy Awards show. It is an annual award given to musicians that are the best in the business. They receive a golden gramophone statuette that solidifies their place in the entertainment industry and their outstanding achievements. The Grammy Award is presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The categories you can win an award for are: best new artist, album of the year, song of the year, and record of the year. These categories are also handed out awards for certain genres.

There are other awards that take place every year that are genre specific. They are less prestigious than the Grammy’s but can still boost a musician’s career and get just as much hype and audience attention. Other annual awards are the County Music Awards, the MTV Video Music awards, Texas Music Awards, Independent Music Awards, and the Brit Awards for example. These music awards recognize achievements for musicians who make music in their genre such as country, hip hop, or alternative music.

Internet Radio is just as influential as traditional radio for promoting a band or singer. Annually, there are the Internet Radio Awards that are held online. You can vote for your favorite Internet radio station, and they will win an award for best program online. If you have a radio station online you can either nominate yourself or one of your listeners can nominate for an award. It is a great way to see what stations there are around the world and to recognize the hard work that your favorite Internet station does day to day to provide you with great music to listen to.

If you want to discover music from around the world, or nominate an Independent musician for their work, you can vote for them at the International Online Music Awards. They are held every year, and you can vote for your favorite Independent band or singer to win an award. A lot of popular mainstream artists have been discovered by their online music. Internet Radio and Productivity

Internet Radio and Productivity

Writing long papers for school or having long days at work can make you sluggish and unproductive. The day to day routine can be boring, and in turn slow you down. Listening to music, however, can make your more productive and can perk you up with a little more energy. There are debates about whether classical music makes you smarter or not. Listening to a certain type of music ranges from person to person. Maybe pop music makes you smarter because you make up songs about what you are studying. Music choices are very personal. One thing that is true is that listening to music, for some people, can make you more productive.

Studies have shown that listening to music can make you more productive, especially at work. Most workers who listen to music get their work done faster and are happier to be at work. Depending on where you work, it can be hard to listen to music and not distract the colleagues around you. If you work in a quiet office building, you may want to consider loading your favorite tunes on an MP3 player. You can browse the Internet for your favorite songs. Some Internet radio stations also let you build your own playlists which can be downloaded to your MP3 player.

Radio stations on the Internet are a great resource for listening to music while you are studying or being productive at work. There are fewer commercials and fewer interruptions that will break your concentration. A lot of traditional radio programs have too many commercial breaks and sponsor they are obligated to promote. Some shows have frequent interruptions from DJs instead of playing music. Another benefit of listening to the radio online is that you do not have to bring in a radio or boom box that will take up space in your office or dorm room for example.

One of the best advantages of Internet Radio that makes you more productive is that you can easily listen to the type of music you like. Traditional radios only have AM and FM stations that can be difficult to tune into. Radio stations on the Internet can be downloaded from anywhere in the world. If pop music is too distracting, you may find that jazz makes you more productive. You can also find music from all over the world. A lot of people find that the beat from pop or electronic music puts them in a good make which makes them want to work harder.

Portable Internet Radio on Your Smart Phone

Portable Internet Radio on Your Smart Phone

I like to access music as simply as possible, find what I like, obtain it, and take it with me. Crucial to this are new/unfamiliar tunes, and not having to compile the songs myself.

Internet radio through your computer allows for the most diversity, and fewer dropped signals with regard to styles/genres, especially for “niche” sites like: funk, jazz fusion, acid/nu jazz, etc.

Coupled with recording/converting software, a smart phone is a great device for listening to radio obtained in this manner.

Smart phones (i.e. Blackberry or similar) with removable storage (sorry iPhone) offers yet another approach. Don’t get me wrong, this can be done with an iPhone also, but there isn’t removable storage. It’s a lot easier and cheaper to buy memory cards, instead of phones, as your library grows.

There are also some good internet radio apps for smartphones like Flycast, Slacker and IHeart radio, which I do use from time to time, but for me they seem to fall short for one reason or another, i.e. poor playlist tracks/genre availability, dropped signals, battery drain while connected, etc.

I like the approach below better.

Determine what audio formats your phone will play. Record the files, then convert to that format. Connect your phone to your computer, then drag and drop files into your phones’ music folder or memory card.

In an earlier article I discussed using recording software to capture internet radio “broadcasts”. Which is fine if you have the url of the station. But what if you don’t?You can futz around with “url snooper” type software to obtain the urls, but that’s a topic for another article. This solution is a lot less bothersome.

If a double male 3.5mm patch cord is connected to the mic jack on iMic, and the other end connected to the headphone jack of your computer…Voila, you now have an in-line connection secure from ambient noise!

But what the heck is an iMic?…find out at: http://profyousion.com/profyousion/internet-radio-on-your-smart-phone/

Second Life holiday parties was an incredible mix of trance, dnb, electronica, dark psy, goa, minimal, proggy, acid, experimental, industrial, noize, tribal, jazz, live music, country, blues, reggae, salsa, classical, opera, and Christmas music. I heard it all and then some.

I love music of all kinds. If it’s good, it’s worth listening to, so don’t start with the nose-up-in-the-air over your favorite genre. Believe me… good music will always find an audience. An audience of sophisticated listeners will stop to listen to any good sound… even if it isn’t part of your normal repertoire.

What is amazing is that dj’s and musicians around the world know this, and they borrow from all genres to create their own personal sounds.

Here in Second Life, we get the results from around the world. World music mixes with the trendy sounds of the day, and we get the sounds that we love so much.

I want to thank all the dj’s, musicians, club owners and event makers in SL. You guys made a holiday scene like no other. APPLAUSE & BRAVO ::::

Is it legal to play old Mercury Radio Theater show recordings on a college internet radio station?

April 18th, 2012

Question by : Is it legal to play old Mercury Radio Theater show recordings on a college internet radio station?
I would like to start a weekly radio show on my college’s internet radio station with old recordings of the Mercury Theater shows. Does anyone know if that would violate copyright laws (or other applicable law relating to radio broadcast)?

Thanks for your help!

Best answer:

Answer by bcnu
Several issues to slice at: whether you need a copyright license for non-profit use in an educational institution, whether it would be a different answer if the “channel” were only accessible to students at the college, whether the original works are copyrighted, and (if so) when do they expire.

The US Copyright law grants a limited exemption for certain educational uses. Read 17 USC s. 110 to see if your proposed use falls under one of them. If not, you may be able to obtain an inexpensive license from the copyright owners (typically the producers and their successor owners).

The Mercury Theater recordings were originally recorded prior to 1973, so they are not covered by any federal copyright. However, state laws prohibit unauthorized publication of sound recordings, so could still find yourself sued for copyright infringement in, say, Massachusetts. They would have to prove, among other things, that you “copied” the recording “without consent” and for the purpose of “profit” from a public performance, or to “sell, rent or transport” any unauthorized copy.

Under many state copyright laws, the copyright NEVER expires. These laws will remain in effect until they are preempted by the federal copyright law in 2067, making all such works “public domain”, i.e., no longer covered by any copyright in the USA.

Give your answer to this question below!
