April 27th, 2012

Question by Topher L: How hard is it to get into the university of Washington?
I have many colleges to choose from but the one me and my family are hoping for the most is UW. Right now im in community college so i can get all those annoying credits out of the way. After a year here i hope to zoom right into this place. How did any of you get in? And i been considering joining the football or band program. What are the things i should be concerning about these things?

Well, first you are going to need extra curricular activites and vollunteer hours. The colleges take a lot in to effect at what kind of person you are. In addition, It is good that you are gonig to a community college. Get good grades in there, probably a 3.5 or above and you should be fine. Are you doing the IGETC or Tag program? Furthermore, I would reccomend taking some sports or excersice classes. In a community college these count toward your GPA so you can have 1 B and take a sports class and get an A to bounce your GPA. I averaged 2-3 sports classes and 3-4 G.E classes and would often end up with a 3.61. With that GPA I got into Berkeley, UCSD, USC, UCI, and UCLA. But I honestly belive it’s because i have more than 3000 vollunteer hours that got me into it. So anyways, sports raelly help you out and also show the college you are an atheletic individual. As far as the band or footbal program I belive it’s a seperate situation. I believe that once you get into UW you then have to audition for the Band program. It helps if you take some band classes at community college. I hope this helped and I wish the best for you in the future. Good luck!

Question by homework123: What do you think my chances of being accepted into the University of Washington?
I’m currently a sophomore, and I have a 3.2 GPA that I’m planning to raise. I’m in a lot of extracurriculars like flags, band, orchestra, track, debate, language clubs, and student council. I’m planning to stock up on AP classes, although I have 1 IB class. I’m projected to receive a 28-32 on the ACT. Do you think I will be accepted?

Your GPA is marginal. Work harder. Aim high, but have an acceptable plan in the event you do not get your first choice. Good luck!

How did Obama listening to his secretary of defense recommendations turn into Obama loves Russia?

March 7th, 2012

Question by iamct01: How did Obama listening to his secretary of defense recommendations turn into Obama loves Russia?
I did the boring work of reading about the missile defense system changes. Sounds like the troops want a “mobile” defense system so the enemy don`t not know where the defenses are. Republicans want to keep the rigid system standing there with our chest puffed out saying make my day. Is Obama saving us from another republican star wars project?

When will Sen. Reid start those Senate hearings into the financial crisis that precipitated this recession?

January 22nd, 2012

Question by The emperor has no clothes: When will Sen. Reid start those Senate hearings into the financial crisis that precipitated this recession?
Over a year ago, Sen. Reid promised to hold hearings into the factors responsible for the current economic recession. He even set the date, November 20, 2008. Well, here it is, one year later and still no hearings. You would have thought that given the scope, depth and devastation that this recession has caused that the senate would take the time out of the busy schedule to get to the bottom of it so that we can possibly avoid something like this in the future.

Why didn’t he hold this hearing and is he still planning on having one?

The college guidebooks in your library, high school counseling office or bookstore will give the average GPAs for accepted students.

If it’s difficult to get into extra-curriculars at your school, look for volunteer opportunities in the community. If you have a Red Cross office, they probably have a volunteer center, or you can check with the hospital, food pantry, etc. If your city has a website, there may be a link to volunteer opportunities in the community.

You might also look into doing some college courses for high school students, etc at any colleges in your area. Some of these have courses that are meant to be a hands-on introduction to careers or may be actual courses for credit. Anything like that, done well, would look good. You might do a search for “summer college programs for high school students” or some such. I think the Johns Hopkins website has info about such programs on their “CTY” link [Center for Talented Youth].

Good luck to you.

Turn Your Roku into the Ultimate Internet Radio!

August 23rd, 2011

Turn Your Roku into the Ultimate Internet Radio!

We all know the Roku is great from streaming our favorite TV shows and movies, but few people know that it also makes a great internet radio. With the addition of just a few channels from the Roku channel store, you can stream literally thousands of radio stations from around the world on your TV or your audio system. I have my Roku plugged into my surround sound system and the audio quality is superb!  Here are our favorite Roku channels that let you tune in the world.

Tune-In
This channel comes from RadioTime.com, a website that provides links to thousands of radio stations around the world streaming on the internet. If it’s streaming on the net, Radio Time has it!

Shoutcast
This popular streaming audio website now has a Roku channel! You’ll never know what you’ll find here. Unlike Tune-In which limits itself to real terrestrial radio stations, Shoutcast gives anyone with a computer and microphone the ability to broadcast anything they want over the internet. Thus, you’ll find some gems, along with some real stinkers on this channel. But, that’s what makes it fun!

]]>

Radio Paradise
A fairly new channel on the Roku scene, Radio Paradise is a single station that prides itself on “music being picked by a real human being”. It’s a single station with an eclectic selection of music, plus as an added bonus, beautiful HD scenery photos are displayed on your TV while the music is playing. As I’m writing this article, RP is playing Sara Swenson’s “Passing Cars, Passing Time”. As the song is playing, HD photos of various classic cars are being displayed on my HDTV. Pretty cool! I’ve only been listening to the channel for a few days as of this writing. So far, I’m very impressed!

Baeble Music
Another fairly new channel is the Baeble Music Channel. Baeble features thousands of concerts, music videos and interviews of indie artists from around the world. Video quality is excellent! If you’re an indie music fan, this channel is for you.

Pandora
This channel based on the popular website doesn’t necessarily stream terrestrial radio stations from around the world. Instead you choose a music format, song title or artist that you want to hear. If that song is available on Pandora, you will hear not only the song, but Pandora’s recommendation on what it thinks you may like based on your previous choices. You can setup different channels with different music genres, artists, etc.

Most Roku users who purchased their device never intended it to be a jukebox. However, if you add these channels to your lineup, I believe you’ll be very impressed at what a versatile little box you have. It can do anything…well almost!
