Land of Rushing Waters
Occasion on 2015-08-23 09:30:00

The Washougal River basin is rich with amazing beauty and history. It really is a 33-mile tributary of the Columbia River in the state of Washington in Gifford Pinchot nationwide Forest, spanning Skamania and Clark County. Several cascades and waterfalls exist across the Washougal River providing photographers seldom seen beauty.

Explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark known the Washougal River because the "Seal River." The title Washougal arises from the Cascades Chinook title meaning "rushing water". It is often recommended that D. B. Cooper, whom hijacked a Boeing 727 in 1971 then parachuted from the airplane with ransom money, could have landed inside Washougal River basin.

We'll kickoff the workshop with a meet and greet reception at Quinn Mountain Estate where we will then discuss the workshop in more detail before moving out to shoot.

We'll break for a specially prepared dinner at Quinn hill prepared by Christina Brittain.
After supper we’ll have a soothing photo critique with great tips on post processing your pictures.
We'll end the workshop inside industry with a sunset shoot inside Columbia River National Scenic region.

A nyc instances bestseller, My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel is an authoritative and deeply personal narrative reputation for hawaii of Israel, by perhaps one of the most influential reporters authoring the center East today.

maybe not since Thomas L. Friedman’s groundbreaking From Beirut to Jerusalem has a book captured the essence and the beating heart associated with the Middle East as keenly and dynamically as My Promised Land. Dealing with unprecedented internal and external pressures, Israel today reaches a minute of existential crisis. Ari Shavit draws on interviews, historic papers, private diaries, and letters, including his own family’s tale, illuminating the pivotal moments of Zionist century to tell a riveting narrative that’s larger than the sum of its parts: both individual and national, both profoundly human and of profound historical dimension.

We satisfy Shavit’s great-grandfather, a British Zionist who in 1897 visited the Holy Land on a Thomas Cook trip and comprehended that it was just how into the future for their individuals; the idealist young farmer whom purchased land from his Arab neighbor inside 1920s to cultivate the Jaffa oranges that would produce Palestine’s booming economy; the visionary youth team frontrunner who, within the 1940s, changed Masada from neglected ruins of an extremist sect into a strong sign for Zionism; the Palestinian whom as a new guy in 1948 ended up being driven together with household from his home during the expulsion from Lydda; the immigrant orphans of Europe’s Holocaust, whom took in menial work and dedicated to raising their children to end up being the leaders for the new state; the pragmatic engineer who was instrumental in developing Israel’s nuclear system inside 1960s, into the only meeting he ever offered; the zealous religious Zionists who began the settler movement into the 1970s; the dot-com entrepreneurs and teenagers and females behind Tel-Aviv’s booming club scene; and today’s architects of Israel’s international policy with Iran, whose nuclear threat looms ominously on the small nation.

As it examines the complexities and contradictions regarding the Israeli condition, My Promised Land asks hard but important questions: Why did Israel become? Just how did it turned out to be? Can Israel survive? Culminating with an analysis associated with the dilemmas and threats that Israel is currently facing, My Promised Land makes use of the defining activities associated with past to shed new light regarding present. The effect is a landmark portrait of a small, vibrant nation living on the edge, whose identification and existence play a vital role in today’s international governmental landscape.ABOUT ARI SHAVIT

—David Remnick on Charlie Rose

Menard House ‘Galveston Firsts’ Summer Lecture Series: The Galveston City Company: First Land Development Company in Texas

Menard House ‘Galveston Firsts’ Summer Lecture Series: The Galveston City Company: First Land Development Company in Texas
Event on 2014-08-03 14:00:00

History comes alive as the Galveston Historical Foundation presents the Menard House 'Galveston Firsts' Summer Lecture Series.

Galveston Historical Foundation will honor the 175th anniversary of the City of Galveston with special lectures and tours at the historic Menard Campus, 3302 Avenue O. The lectures will take place at 2 p.m. on Sundays June 1, June 22, July 13 and August 3.

In addition, Galveston’s oldest residential dwelling, the 1838 Menard House, will be opened for public tours.

August 3 – The Galveston City Company: First Land Development Company in Texas

One of the first land development companies west of the Mississippi, the Galveston City Company was organized in 1838 under the leadership of Michel Menard and other founders. The company sold lots for development and gifted others for community projects or important public institutions.

The presentation reveals preliminary findings from a special project undertaken to examine the minutes of the company, communication among stockholders and managers, and descriptive information on the beginnings of Galveston.

The final presentation of the 2014 Menard Summer Lecture series provides a rare look into the archives held by Stewart Title Company, which reveal the first few decades of the island’s history.

Presented by W. Dwayne Jones and Andrew Coleman.

Dwayne Jones serves as the executive director of the Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF), one of the largest not-for-profit historic preservation organizations working at the local level in the country.

Jones holds degrees in History and Asian Studies from Trinity University in San Antonio and a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.  Prior to joining the GHF, Jones served as executive director of Preservation Dallas. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), received the Dorothy Savage Award for Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation from Preservation Dallas and was named an Honorary Member of the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Andrew Coleman is a historian and native Galvestonian.

After receiving his B.A. in History from Tulane University of Louisiana in 2013, he returned to Galveston to work for Galveston Historical Foundation, where he divides his time between the Preservation Conservation Services Department and Bishop’s Palace.

About the 1838 Menard House (pictured above)

Built in 1838 by John and Augustus Allen for the founder of Galveston, Michel Branamour Menard, the property passed between Menard and the Allen brothers (founders of Houston) in many complicated dealings in its early years. It is the oldest surviving residential dwelling in Galveston and the only structure to be owned by the founders of both Galveston and Houston.

For more information on the Menard Summer Lecture Series at Menard Hall or public tours of the 1838 Menard House, call Jami Durham at (409)750-9108 or e mail Jami.Durham@galvestonhistory.org.
