What Makes the Radio a Good Choice of Promotional Item?

June 10th, 2010

When asked to name types of promotional gifts, chances are that most people will immediately think of two stand-bys-pens and mugs. These are perhaps the two most commonly-used promotional items, and it is worthwhile examining what makes pens and mugs so popular. How does the promotional radio measure up to these old stand-bys?

Price is perhaps the main factor that determines the popularity of the promotional pen, and in this regard, it is true that no other promotional item can measure up. Nothing beats the promotional pen in terms of expense. However, other types of promotional items definitely provide some advantages that make them valuable replacements for the pen.

Two other desirable aspects of the promotional item are portability and practicality. A good promotional item must be portable, so that it can be easily transported both by the giver and the recipient. A portable item is more likely to be often used, particularly if it is small enough to be carried in a pocket or a bag. The pen certainly sets the standard in this regard, and the radio definitely measures up, with many popular models being personal radios that fit comfortably in a pocket or a bag.

The second feature, practicality, simply means that a good promotional item should be something that is likely to be used often. Again, the pen is an excellent example-when you need a pen, there is little else that will perform the same function. The radio is also a good example of practicality in a promotional item, as there is simply no other promotional item that can take its place. A promotional mug or pen will not perform the same function as a radio can!

Many models of radio do in fact exceed the pen in terms of practicality-several varieties are available that can perform multiple functions. Printed radios with added functionality such as a pedometer, personal fan, stop watch, clock or photo frame mean such items are more likely to be kept and used for a long period of time than a pen is. Items with more than one function are always welcome to the recipient, as they speak much more loudly than the pen of the thoughtfulness of the gift giver. Little attention to detail is needed to buy and distribute promotional pens, but choosing a radio for your clients or staff requires more personal attention to the styles and colors that are more likely to please the recipients.

In short, the promotional radio is indeed an excellent option for a promotional item. It will, of course, be distributed differently from the pen-radios are typically more expensive than the average printed pen and will not be given away as freely as pens are-but giving a well-chosen radio to a valued client or member of staff means you are giving a gift with much more longevity than a pen, and that is one very significant advantage that makes a radio a great promotional item.

What makes a radio select and hold a specific frequency?

May 10th, 2010

My cars antena broke (the kind that goes up when you turn the radio on). Replaced it but when I turn the radio on and the antena comes up I get service but I’m unable to select and hold a station. I get every station in range and all at once. Just curious why that is.

Music: What Makes Austria Tick

February 25th, 2010

Among its many important contributions, music has constituted an important element of Austria’s and, particularly, Vienna’s, cultural life. Vienna has been and continues to be an important center of musical innovation. It is impossible to think about and discuss Austria without giving serious consideration to its long and profound musical presence in the history of Western music.
Vienna’s position as a cultural center took hold in the early 1500s, with focus centered around instruments such as the lute. By the 18th and 19th centuries, composers were drawn to Vienna thanks in large measure to the patronage of the Habsburgs, and made Vienna the European capital of classical music. Vienna’s greatest musical “sons,” such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827), and Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899), became associated with the city. During the Baroque period, Slavic and Hungarian folk forms influenced Austrian music.

Classical Music
The 18th century, one of the highpoints of classical music, brought Vienna to the forefront of this genre. Three composers in particular created and developed powerful and innovative musical genres: Beethoven and his symphonies, concertantes, chamber music, piano sonatas, operas, and choral music; Mozart, also through similar forms, developed a balance between melody and form; and Franz Joseph Haydn, through the invention of the string quartet and sonata form.
By the latter part of the 18th century, the harpsichord, long the instrument of choice, was replaced by the pianoforte, or simply, the piano. String ensembles and vocal music also grew, while the burgeoning middle-class became more aware of and interested in music through the philosophies of the Enlightenment. In 1842, Otto Nicolai of the Imperial Opera House, announced the creation of what would become the Vienna Philharmonic.
During this period, a division between popular compositions for entertainment and “serious” art music began. At first, the division was less pronounced, with most composers, such as Franz Schubert, and Joseph Strauss, writing in both camps.
But it is with Strauss where a clear departure to popular music takes shape, making Strauss the most celebrated composer of the era, and indeed the first popular Austrian musician. His “Tales of the Vienna Woods” and “Vienna Waltzes” have become staples of the Western musical canon. By the mid- to late 19th century, other composers, such as Gustav Mahler, Anton Bruckner, and Richard Wagner, hailing from either Vienna or closely associated with the city, continue to make Vienna the unrivaled center of Austria’s musical life. Later musical geniuses, particularly Arnold Schönberg, Richard Strauss, Anton von Webern, and Alban Berg, perpetuate Austria’s stronghold on classical music.

Folk music
The flip-side of Austria’s musical record is its long and strong folk music tradition. The ländler, as the name suggests, is the music of the countryside, the land, the peasantry. The ländler, a folk dance in ¾ time, was popular in Austria, as well as in south Germany and German Switzerland at the end of the 18th century. It is a couples’ dance, featured by strong hopping and stamping. At times, it was purely instrumental, and at others had a vocal part, which sometimes included yodeling. With the popularity of dancehalls in 19th century Europe, the ländler adopted a quicker pace and more elegance; men shed the hobnail boots original to the dance and donned more graceful footwear. It is believed that the dance evolved into the waltz.

Yodeling: Mountain music
Maybe it’s the Alps that have something to do with it. In fact it does: Yodeling is a type of throat singing that developed in the famed mountain range. In Austria, it was called juchizn, and featured the use of both non-lexical syllables and yells, which were used to communicate across the mountains. Yodels usually begin with a single voice melody, then joined by several more voices. The presence of an echo is vital for producing a correct sound.

What Makes Relaxing Music

February 17th, 2010

Music is the key to a thousand emotions. We associate music with the places we have been, the times we have experienced and the people in our lives. Music is all around us. There is no denying the effectiveness of music, so why not use it to affect our own emotions and enhance our personal environment? Relaxing music, relaxation music, meditation music… call it what you will. There is no question that it can help us to shape our environment effectively and can be changed to suit or influence our mood.

In todays society, wherever there is radio, television, cinema or the internet, we will be exposed to music. Music is all around us and is a commodity so important that is used by virtually every company on the planet to sell us their products and services. Very often we are completely oblivious to the sounds drifting out of those in-store speakers or the impact and drama of an action-movie soundtrack placed in a car advert. Music is a complex language that can convey any emotion or conjure a response from any audience. At the same time music is simple and universally understandable.

We are used to others using music to influence our emotions and therefore decisions. However, we rarely use music’s benefits to help ourselves. Relaxing music or relaxation music (also marketted as meditation music or yoga music) can be used to relieve stress, unwind after a hard day at work, promote good sleep or as a focus of concentration during yoga or meditation. As a composer of music for relaxation, for a long time have researched the benefits of music for health and wellbeing. Music is just a part of relaxation, but can be the key to calm and relax your mind and body. A good

habit can be built; find a quite room, put work worries to one side and allow yourself time to unwind – dim the lights, light some candles or incense or whatever you find calming. Close your eyes and focus on the sound of your breath. Take in the same amount of air and breathe longer breaths but less often. Relaxing music is a great focus for an exercise like this or any relaxation technique. Listen to relaxation music at a volume level that is high enough to mask any background noise but not so high as to be overbearing. In a busy workplace or home, headphones are useful.

The music should not be too distracting and should be carefully composed to be easy to listen to. Music should be upbeat but also interesting and different enough to capture the imagination and become a suitable focus for relief. Nature sounds enhance the experience as this helps you to imagine a place of peace, calm, tranquility and serenity. It is best to use music written specifically for relaxation, although you could use any music that you find particularly relaxing. This technique is most useful if it can be practiced for a significant amount of time – more than half an hour. However, it can be effective if used for no more than just a few minutes at break times.

Washington State Cougars Tickets – Cougar Great Rueben Mayes Makes the Hall of Fame

February 10th, 2010

As the whole Washington State team tries to recover up from some unexpected defeats, here is some good news for them .

Being only the fifth Cougar player to be inducted in the Hall of Fame, Rueben Meyes makes no bones about the fact that he is privileged to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. That he came from Canada to settle down in Washington, makes the challenge even tougher. It is never easy to settle down in another country. While all this takes time, playing for the state and excelling in what you do take a lot of guts.

The story of Rueben Meyes dates back the 80s, when he played for Cougars from 1982-85. His list of achievements was too impressive then to have any team ignoring him. Even if they had ignored him, they would have done it at their own peril. By the time Meyes had a look in to the State team, he had a long list of ?Been there, done that? things. One of the more memorable moments for Meyes with the Washington State was when they beat the Huskies in the Apple Cup. The Huskies then were considered to be formidable opponents and beating them was no mean achievement at all.

And not that Rueben was one who would rest on his laurels! Game after game, he tried to reinvent himself. With his skills of speed and aggression, he tried to add some deftness and dribbles. All of this combined in one classic mix that saw Meyes set the records for PAC-10, NCAA Division 1 and the State record. All these three feats were accomplished with just one act ? That is Meyes for you!

He ran 357 yards against Oregon to help the State to a touchdown. Clearly, this was no mean effort considering no one in the PAC10 or in the NCAA had ever done this before. This came on the back of an awe-inspiring 216 yards run against Stanford. The time before the game against Stanford though was a tough one for Meyes. He was recovering from an injury setback that kept him on the bench for quite a few weeks.

Against Stanford, the whole team jelled as a unit and of course, Meyes stood out. The team performance was necessary because Stanford themselves have a strong unit and beating them on the back of couple of performances would not have been easy. Against Oregon though it was a different story altogether! The pitch was wet and the State players had no other option but to run. The more they ran, the more the chances they had of winning!

They did run, with Meyes leading the way! Apart from these achievements, what will make Meyes prouder is the fact that whatever has been thrown at him, he has overcome them with his guts.

Washington’s Athletic Director Finally Makes the Right Move – Fires Coach

October 26th, 2009

Copyright © 2008 Ed Bagley

Scott Woodward, the University of Washington’s newly appointed permanent athletic director, has made it official that Tyrone Willingham will not be back for another season as the Huskies’ head football coach.

Willingham will stay on to coach the team’s 5 remaining games and then leave with a $1 million buyout. Willingham was in his 4th year of a 5-year contract.

His Huskies are currently 0-7 this season following a 33-7 slapping by Notre Dame last Saturday (10-25-08) on the Huskies’ home turf. Their 7th straight loss of the season meant that the Huskies will end the year with a losing record and elimination from bowl eligibility.

Only a fool trapped in an outhouse for the last 5 years would not know that it was not if but when Willingham would go. With any kind of luck whatsoever Willingham’s entire staff will go with him right out the front door.

Washington’s football program needs some new faces, new game plans, new offensive and defensive schemes, new personalities, new life and new excitement before all of its fans leave Husky Stadium and never return.

Only a very inexperienced chief administrator or a broke fool would think that fans and boosters will open their pockets to fund a new or remodeled stadium for a losing team. People with money do not invest their hard-earned dollars in organizations that continually lose, and that look like losers, talk like losers and walk like losers.

People with money are more apt to give their money to an organization or charity that is upscale and already has something going on. The reason is simple—winners want to run with winners or organizations they perceive, with some cash input, will become winners soon.

Sanity keeps me from actually talking about Washington’s performance against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Oh, all right, if you must know here are the Husky offensive statistics for the game: 26 yards rushing, 98 yards passing, 124 yards of total offense. That is all you need to know.

If we were in Biblical times, the players and coaches probably would have been dodging rocks before they left the stadium. If you think I exaggerate, you have not seen the Huskies play since their franchise quarterback Jake Locker was injured earlier in the year.

By all accounts Ty Willingham is a stand up guy. He works hard, he is honest, he is straightforward, he has integrity, he is not looking for shortcuts or handouts. He wants to get on in this world by the sweat of his own brow, lifting himself up by his bootstraps to become successful in today’s competitive world of coaching on a national stage.

As a big time coach at Washington, he simply could not win more games than he lost, and a whole lot of paying customers (fans and boosters) thought he could not coach victories at Washington if his life depended upon it. His record at Washington was 11 and 32 (11 wins and 32 losses) after seasons of 2-9, 5-7, 4-9 and 0-7 so far this year.

His backers say that no one could have turned the program around at Washington quickly. There is too much evidence to the contrary, and it explains why his backers are so few and jumping ship like passengers on the Titanic.

Mark Dantonio took over a program at Michigan State that was 4-8 and went 7-6 his first year and to a bowl game, he is currently 7-2 this year and ranked No. 22 in the AP Top 25 Poll. Current Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster went 1-11 in his first season last year and is 7-1 this season and currently ranked No. 20 in the Top 25 Poll.

When Mike Price went to UTEP, he took over a team that had won only 2 games in each of its last two seasons. In his first year, Price went 8-4 and to a bowl, in his second year he went 8-4 and to a bowl game. Do not waste your breath telling me the head coach does not make a difference. The head coach can make all the difference in the world.

Speculation is rampant on the Washington campus in Seattle and really all around Western Washington about who will replace Ty Willingham. It is very likely that the Washington powers to be will set their sights on a high-profile coach meaning, among other things, that a successor may not be announced until the current bowl season is over.

Until then, they would be interviewing more losers than winners, like we don’t know what that’s about.

Satellite Radio Makes Sense

October 9th, 2009

Like cable television, Satellite radio is fast becoming a new genre of and unto itself. While not having to endure the same regulations as applied by the FCC in regards to free radio, the broadcasters of satellite radio, like cable television, have more options available to them and are able to offer a wider variety of programming as a direct result.

Satellite radio is the cable television of the radio broadcasting world. People can buy a satellite radio subscription in much the same manner that they would subscribe to cable television. The subscription includes various types of radio broadcasting not otherwise available to the listener. These usually include more adult-oriented radio broadcasting since the FCC does not regulate the industry in the same manner that they do for the free radio airwaves.

Since people are paying for the privilege of listening, and satellite radio is a buyer’s market, the wide selection of broadcast media that is available are regulated mostly by what the listeners want and what they are willing to pay for. While satellite radio may not be a viable alternative for everyone, it does offer more listening opportunities for those people who are willing to pay for it. Satellite radio subscriptions vary in cost, but all things being equal, the subscription fees are not at all unattractive when the broad spectrum of radio programming is compared to what limited choices are available without satellite radio.

There are also still some limitations in the availability of satellite radio. While these areas are in steady decline as satellite radio listeners increase in numbers, there are still voids in the market where it is not yet financially feasible to install satellite radio options. It is best to check for the availability of satellite radio before purchasing any satellite ready receivers.

Satellite radio receivers vary in all manner of shape, style and output range and are available to fit the needs of most any satellite radio listener. Deciding which one is best for any given use will require the purchaser to do a little research into satellite radio and what local options are available, then adjusted according to the personal preferences of the listener.

While the advent of Satellite radio technology is seen as a new path to freedom for some and a road to decline for others, the satellite radio of today looks like it is here to stay. If satellite radio is available in your area, it can be a worthy investment. Satellite radio really does offer many options not available to the regular radio listener.
