Why is the Washington Monument not lined up straight with the Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial?

May 22nd, 2011

Question by DJ Schuby: Why is the Washington Monument not lined up straight with the Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial?
If you look at a map you’ll see that the Washington Monument is off center. I have heard that this was done for some reason but the person who told me could not remember why this was done.

My understanding is that the ground at the exact intersection point wasn’t suitable, so the original builders shifted it over a bit.

Albert Einstein Memorial ? a tribute to the absent-minded genius

Living in the shadow of the White House and The Pentagon, is a city that plays host wild nightclubs, some of the best dining places, historical sites, museums and art galleries. The seat of power; the city can boast of making history. Home to national treasures such as the Smithsonian and Capitol, the city is a veritable playground for the traveller who enjoys a trip through history. Watch world class entertainment at the Kennedy Center and Shakespeare Theatre, while the Woolly Mammoth and Studio Theatre produces some edgy performances. Shopping is an equally rewarding experience with chic designer wear to hand made crafts to be purchased.

Popular memorials around Washington DC are the African American Civil War Memorial, Air Force Memorial, Emancipation Statue, FDR Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, National World War II Memorial, Pentagon Memorial, Theodore Roosevelt Island, Washington Monument and Albert Einstein Memorial.

Near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and on the grounds of the National Academy of Sciences seats the bronze statue of Albert Einstein. Depicted in a seated position with a book in hand, the statue weighs 4 tons and is 12 feet in length. The papers in his hand hold the equations of the three most valuable scientific contributions the genius made, theory of relativity, photoelectric effect and his theory on energy and matter. Whilst around the area that the statue is placed, three quotations of Albert Einstein can be seen. Three quotes of the genius can also be seen at the sight, each inspiring and provides an insight in to his personality. The memorial is easily accessible no matter the time of day, and lends an endearing image to the magnificence of a man who changed the way the world thought.

Memorial, Bob Feller, dies at 92

He first burst onto the big league scene as a flame-throwing 17-year old Iowa farm boy, striking out 15 batters in his very first start, and until he died Wednesday at the age of 92, Bob Feller never stopped throwing high hard ones as a Hall-of-Fame pitcher who won 266 games, a World War II hero with five campaign ribbons and eight battle stars, and a grizzled and grumpy retiree who feuded with Jackie Robinson, jabbed at Muhammad Ali and slammed modern day players as “the shameless instant gratification generation, where to buy Discount MLB Jerseys, ujersy is a good choice.”

Feller, who was diagnosed with leukemia in August of 2010, and was moved into a hospice Wednesday night, pitched 18 seasons in the majors from 1936-56, all of them with the Cleveland Indians, during which he set a slew of records that were eventually broken. He threw three no-hitters and led the American League in wins six times, strikeouts seven times, innings five times and ERA once.

Few players have ever broken into the majors with the flash of Feller in 1936 and most of those who did, eventually lacked the staying power the 6-foot,185-pound high-kicking righthander from Van Meter, Iowa had, if you want to buy Cleveland Indians Jerseys, please go to ujersy.

Blessed with a fastball that was clocked at 98.6 MPH shortly after his release from the Navy, Feller honed his skills under the watchful eye of his father, Billy, on the family’s own field, hewed out of their 360-acre farm. In July of 1936, Feller caught the eye of scouts as a 17-year old when he struck out eight of the “Gas House Gang” St. Louis Cardinals in an exhibition game. By then, however, Indians chief scout Cy Slapnicka, upon being alerted to the five no-hitters Feller had pitched for Van Meter High, had already secretly signed him to a minor league contract with Fargo-Morehead of …

The National Mall in Washington, D.C., is “a great public space, as essential a part of the American landscape as the Grand Canyon,” according to architecture critic Paul Goldberger, but few realize how recent, fragile, and contested this achievement is. In Monument Wars, Kirk Savage tells the Mall’s engrossing story–its historic plan, the structures that populate its corridors, and the sea change it reveals regarding national representation. Central to this narrative is a dramatic shift from the nineteenth-century concept of a decentralized landscape, or “ground”-heroic statues spread out in traffic circles and picturesque parks-to the twentieth-century ideal of “space,” in which authority is concentrated in an intensified center, and the monument is transformed from an object of reverence to a space of experience. Savage’s lively and intelligent analysis traces the refocusing of the monuments themselves, from that of a single man, often on horseback, to commemorations of common soldiers or citizens; and from monuments that celebrate victory and heroism to memorials honoring victims. An indispensable guide to the National Mall, Monument Wars provides a fresh and fascinating perspective on over two hundred years of American history.
