The National Radio Institute in Washington has closed down. So where do you go now?

April 22nd, 2012

Question by Homeboy: The National Radio Institute in Washington has closed down. So where do you go now?
The National Radio Institute in Washington, taken over earlier by McGraw-Hill and renamed the National Radio Institute McGraw-Hill Continuing Education Centre, was closed some years ago. In the past, the National Radio Institute advertised that you could do correspondence courses with them in How To Fix Appliances, Basic Radio Servicing and things like that.
So where does one go now?
I know you can get CDs with the old NRI courses, but these will unfortunately be a bit outdated now. I would like to know where you can get the modern equivalent of the NRI courses.
I’m semi-retired and work from home, and I can’t go out to any part-time courses or colleges. I live in South Africa, and there’s probably not much available locally anyway.
Thanks, Wired. Good advice. I’ll definitely follow it up and go about it that way.

Google “correspondence courses” to see several options. I also tried “appliance repair courses” and found some correspondence courses listed. You will want to do a bit of research to make sure it isn’t just a place that takes your money and gives nothing in return. Good luck.

Q&A: Why the national radio stations have a range of FM frequencies?

January 17th, 2012
FM Radio
by Sheta

Question by Kevinlad: Why the national radio stations have a range of FM frequencies?
For example, BBC radio 1 is ranging from 97 – 99 FM, radio 2 is 88 – 91 FM, classic FM is 100 – 102 FM, etc. Why couldn’t these stations broadcast in only one frequency nationally (for example, just FM 98.8 for radio 1 throughtout the UK) and then free up the rest of the frequency range to other radio stations?

Washington DC: National Air and Space Museum – Breitling Orbiter 3 Gondola
Flight to Washington

On March 1, 1999, Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones lifted off from the Swiss alpine village of Chateau d’Oex in the Breitling Orbiter 3 balloon. On March 21, 1999—19 days, 21 hours, and 55 minutes later—they landed in the Egyptian desert after traveling 45,755 kilometers (28,431 miles) and completing the first nonstop flight around the world in a balloon.

The success of Breitling Orbiter 3 was built upon two previous attempts: Breitling Orbiter in 1997 and Breitling Orbiter 2 in 1998. Those experiences enabled the Breitling team to develop trustworthy technical systems and a basic strategy in which Piccard and Jones would pilot their balloon up to altitudes of 11,000 meters (36,000 feet) and to where jet stream winds would drive it across the Pacific at up to 176 kilometers (105 miles) per hour.

The National Air and Space Museum (NASM), administered by the Smithsonian Institute, maintains the largest collection of aircraft and spacecraft in the world and is a vital center for research into the history, science, and technology of aviation and spaceflight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. Established along the National Mall on July 1, 1976, the museum was designed by Gyo Obata of Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum as four simple marble-encased cubes containing the smaller and more theatrical exhibits, connected by three spacious steel-and-glass atrium which house the larger exhibits such as missiles, airplanes and spacecraft.

The Smithsonian Institution, an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States and by funds from its endowment, contributions, and profits from its shops and its magazines, was established in 1846. Although concentrated in Washington DC, its collection of over 136 million items is spread through 19 museums, a zoo, and nine research centers from New York to Panama.

Worthy of the Nation: Washington, DC, from L’Enfant to the National Capital Planning Commission

July 27th, 2011

Worthy of the Nation: Washington, DC, from L’Enfant to the National Capital Planning Commission

When Worthy of the Nation first appeared in 1977, it won much acclaim for its comprehensive treatment of Washington’s design and urban development. Now the story has been brought up to the present, tracing the first thirty years of home rule for the District through the completion of the National Museum of the American Indian and the World War II Memorial in the early twenty-first century.

Frederick Gutheim and Antoinette J. Lee begin with L’Enfant’s survey of 1791, the uneven growth of Washington City as an early port, its rapid expansion during the Civil War, and the McMillan Plan of 1901–1902, inspired by the City Beautiful movement. They consider the close relationship between the growth in national ambitions and responsibilities and the density of the governmental presence—offices, facilities, military outposts, parks, and multiplying statuary and memorials. Gutheim and Lee also survey residential communities, commercial districts, and transportation infrastructure. They outline various efforts to shape and channel the phenomenal growth of the city during the twentieth century, including controversial attempts to rehabilitate some neighborhoods while largely destroying others in the name of urban renewal.

Illustrated with plans, maps, and new and historic photographs, the second edition of Worthy of the Nation provides researchers and general readers with an appealing and authoritative view of the planning and evolution of the federal district.
