Top 5 reasons to take office space in Washington D.C

Looking for office space in America can be a confusing and tough business. Where to go, what kind of commercial real estate to take and how much to pay are all vital questions which you need to ask yourself before you make any serious commitment. I can’t help you with which type of commercial property to pick and how much to pay but I can help you with where you should go – Washington D.C.!

Yep, Washington D.C. is the obvious choice for any business looking to take office space in America. Below are my top 5 reasons to take office space in Washington D.C.

1. Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States! Founded in 1790, Washington D.C. now has a population of nearly 600,000, which swells to more than 1 million during the working week. This means any business placed in the capital will never be short of customers or neighbours! Home to 174 foreign embassies, Washington D.C. is governed by a mayor and a 13-member city council.

2. Washington office space is some of the best in the world. Rich in quality A-Grade commercial real estate, the state is home to the headquarters of some of the country’s biggest organizations, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization of American States and the Pan America Health Organization. 5 of the Fortune 500 companies are also placed in Washington D.C.

3. Washington D.C. is located in the humid subtropical climate zone, which means it boasts hot and humid summers and fairly mild winters. This makes it perfect for businesses which enjoy the sun and spending their weekends outdoors in the heat.

4. On the back of the recent recession, Washington D.C. now boasts a growing, diversified economy. The state was one of the areas in the US which was least affected by the economic downturn – this is due to the fact that the government accounts for around 30% of all jobs in the Washington D.C area. In 2006, the state was named as one of the top 10 areas in the US which are most favourable to business expansion by Expansion Magazine, while the Washington Metropolitan Area had an unemployment rate of just 6.9% in January 2010.

5. Washington D.C. is full of things to do and see outside of office hours. The National Mall is a large, open park area in the center of the city. At the center of the Mall you’ll find the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Pier. Those interested in history will love the National Archives and the National Museum of Natural History, while sight-seers will love the Tidal Basin. The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts is home to the National Symphony Orchestra, while sport-lovers will adore the state’s teams including the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals.

So there you have it; proof that Washington D.C. is an excellent choice for any business looking to take office space in the US.

April 15th, 2010

This clip is from the new tv series “John Adams.” George Washington takes the first Oath of Office for President of the United States of America. I took the liberty of adding the tune “Hail to the Chief” in the video. “I, George Washington, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and I will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Commander in Chief. Washington Local Government Office Improves Productivity and Stretches Their Budget With Avg Anti-virus

March 18th, 2010

Jeff Bush is the Applications and Network Systems Specialist for Grant County’s Technology Services division, based in Ephrata, Washington. He leads a five-member team that supervises a sprawling network of 600 workstations and 49 servers across the county’s 20 offices, agencies and departments in 12 different locations.

Grant County had been relying on Computer Associates (CA) Anti-Virus to protect the majority of the county’s offices, while the Department of Public Works used Panda Anti-Virus. It was this inconsistency of standards of protection that prompted Bush to begin considering a new approach to protection – one that would take a lot less resources to manage.

“We have a lot of network for five people to manage,” he said, “so I wanted to consolidate all of the county’s Internet security protection with a single solution. Using two different products with different detection methods and update cycles was really putting a strain on our resources.”

But the biggest driver for change, according to Bush, was the team’s frustration with technical support.

“We were having all kinds of problems with CA,” he recalled. “First, the software tried to take over our network! Then we were hit with a couple of viruses that made it past the initial defenses. CA eventually got rid of the viruses, but it caused us a lot of headaches along the way. It was bad enough that the viruses got through in the first place, but when they told us we needed to use two different scanning engines to eliminate the problem, I felt as if I was going insane.”

Continued Bush “I really lost it when CA’s technical support let us down at the worst possible time. We decided right then and there to start looking for a new anti-virus solution.”

Finding the Perfect Fit

Bush and his team conducted an exhaustive search for a solution that they could deploy across all of their facilities without breaking the bank.

“After researching and comparing all of the top-selling antivirus software products, we came to the conclusion that AVG would offer us the most complete solution for our needs,” he noted.

“I was already familiar with the home user version of AVG Anti-Virus, and I was pleased to find the same qualities of power, performance, and affordability in the network product. Plus, the remote administration capability makes it easy for us to manage all the workstations and servers from a single central location. That alone looked to be a tremendous time saver, given the number of physical locations we have.”

The next step Grant County was to identify an Authorized AVG Distributor they could work with to get the solution up and running with minimal disruption. The recommendation came back that Walling Data was the place to go.

Walling Data is the longest-standing and highest-volume distributor of AVG Technologies solutions in North America. It’s also the only distributor to offer all its customers – resellers and end-users – free, unlimited, U.S.-based pre- and post-sales support. In the light of his experience with CA, this was music to Bush’s ears

“Walling Data offered a healthy discount on AVG, and buying through them was painless,” he recalled. “And when I heard about the Free Support, we’d made the right choice. The reps were friendly and efficient. They walked us through the ordering process and we were all set and ready to roll with AVG in no time.”

Like Night and Day

Switching to AVG Network Edition 8.0 was a trouble-free experience for Jeff’s team. “The difference between AVG and CA or Panda is like night and day,” he said. “AVG is working out really well and we’ve had no issues with viruses hitting the network since we switched. The update process is also a lot easier to manage.”

Even better, switching to AVG has saved the department money. Added Bush: “There’s a huge price advantage for us to going with AVG over CA or Panda. We were able to save 20% over our previous costs.”

“I’ve not had to call for technical support yet, which is a good sign of the ways things are going to be with AVG, but it’s good to know that Free Support is available whenever I might need it. Plus, my brief experience in dealing with Walling Data convinced me that those guys are the real deal. If I ever need help, I know they’ll be ready and able to help me.”

Spreading the Word

AVG has had such a positive impact on Bush that he now recommends it to colleagues and even to his own family.

“For businesses, I recommend AVG over CA and Panda every time,” he said. “And I’ve used AVG Free Edition for the past seven years on my personal computer at home. I recommend the Free Edition to family and friends currently using other Anti-Virus software.

“Even if they say ‘But I already use Norton,’ I tell them to ditch it and get with the program. With Norton, you get a 60 day trial and then you have to start paying for the protection. The basic AVG protection is Free, and it works!”

Mexico Tourism Board to Open Office in Washington, D.c

February 12th, 2010

As part of a more aggressive international promotional strategy in North America, the Mexico Tourism Board (MTB) will open a marketing office in Washington, D.C. in May, bringing the total number of offices in the region to nine.

Heading up the Washington, D.C. office will be Eduardo Chaillo, a Mexico Tourism Board veteran who once led the Mexico Convention Bureau (MCB) and most recently oversaw the MTB’s promotional efforts in the United States and Canada from the MTB’s midwestern headquarters in Chicago.

According to Chaillo, the office opening responds to a need to better service the northeast region, whose high population density and per-capita income make it one of Mexico’s most important international tourism feeder markets. The city is also home to many of the United States’ leading travel associations, government agencies and chambers of commerce, as well as the Mexican Embassy, making an established presence for the MTB there particularly important, Chaillo said.

While the office will specialize in all product segments, from sun and beach to nature to culture, particular emphasis will be placed on meetings and conventions, according to Chaillo. Mexico wants to stake its claim for a larger piece of the United States’ business travel market, estimated by the Convention Industry Council at US$122 billion; currently, only 12.5 percent of the meetings and conventions organized by U.S. companies are held in Mexico, meaning the sector offers tremendous opportunity, . According to the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), 30 percent of organizers of the 300,000 conventions it registered last year expressed a desire to hold events in Mexico.

In addition to opening an office in the U.S. capital, the MTB will also expand operations in its West Coast office, headquartered in Los Angeles, announced Mexico Tourism Board CEO Francisco Lopez Mena. The region is by far the most important U.S. tourism feeder market for Mexico, responsible for more than 2.4 million of the international tourists visiting the country in 2006, said Lopez Mena.

Funding for the office and other promotional initiatives slated for the coming year will come from the MTB’s promotional budget of 1.61 billon pesos (about 150 million dollars), 40 percent larger than the previous year. The increase derives from the recent passage of a provision increasing from 50 to 70 percent the MTB’s share of tourism revenues from the International Tourist Tax (DNI).

About the Mexico Tourism Board

The Mexico Tourism Board (MTB) brings together the resources of federal and state governments, municipalities and private companies to promote Mexico’s tourism attractions and destinations internationally. Created in 1999, the MTB is Mexico’s tourism promotion agency, and its participants include members of both the private and public sectors. The MTB has offices throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
