I Weekly Magazine’s Top 10 Persons Of The Decade

April 9th, 2011

I Weekly Magazine’s Top 10 Persons Of The Decade

I Weekly’s Top 10 Persons of the Decade

10. Serena Williams

Serena Williams blazed onto the scene as the little sister of tennis star Venus Williams but soon proved she was a force to be reckoned with. Since making her debut in 1995 Serena has been ranked the number 1 female in the World on 5 separate occasions including now. She is the reigning champion singles and doubles at the US Open and Australian. She is the reining champion in doubles along side her sister Venus at Wimbledon. She has won more grand slam titles (23) than any other active female player. And to top it off she has won 2 Olympic Gold Medals in women’s doubles.  Serena Williams has won more career prize money than any other “female athlete” in history. Her career winnings are estimated to be over million not including her endorsements. And according to her peers she is on course to become one of the greatest tennis players ever and that makes her a champ in our book.

9. Halle Berry

Movie star spokes model, former Miss Ohio and now our first ever African-American Academy Award winner. Halle Berry delivers the goods. Berry made history by becoming the first ever African American woman to win an Academy Award for a lead Actress in a Motion Picture. She is on everyone’s “Most Beautiful” lists and she proved in a year of heavy hitting actresses delivering great work that she had more than just a pretty face. She gave us an appetizer of her talent with her rave performance in HBO’s “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge”. She took home the Golden Globe, Emmy, Sag and NAACP award. She followed up her performance in “Monster’s Ball” and hit a homerun sweeping her way through the 2002′s award’s season winning The Academy Award. When she delivered her heartfelt speech through tears we all cried with her. It was a crowning moment to be proud of and we were.

8. Denzel Washington

If Halle is our woman well then Denzel is our man. Is there anybody sexier or who can deliver on the big screen better than Washington? We loved him in a “Soldier’s Story, Malcolm X, Glory and Cry Freedom”. But when Denzel played the bad guy in “Training Day” well you know what they say everyone loves the “bad guy”. And bad he was his performance as Alonzo in Training day made guys even want to be Denzel. He has that charisma and charm that makes woman swoon and he’s a man’s man that makes men want to hang with him. Denzel has been named “”America’s Favorite Movie Star” period three years in a row according to the Harris poll. Only dropping to No. 3 in 2010. When it comes to delivering on film he is a heavy hitter and worth his weight in gold. And in 2002 after Berry’s historic win The Academy gave us a double scoop that night awarding Denzel Washington the Academy Award for lead Actor in a Motion Picture and understood what we knew all along that Denzel is “The Man”!

7. Jay-Z

Can I get a…Yes that is Jay-Z our number 7 person of the decade. Jay-Z did for music what Russell Simmons did for rap many years before him. Mr. Carter understood that rap was not only black that it was urban. It existed a mix breed of blacks, whites and Latinos. He took the rap game to new heights and broadened the spectrum of what hip-hop could be and what it is today. He not only signed a record deal as a rap artist he also became the boss starting his own label Roca Fella Records. He changed the way that rappers looked at the music game and introduced a whole new audience to his music. No other artist other than Michael Jackson and Prince can sell out an arena in hours as this megastar does. As the boss he signed two of the biggest music stars today Rihanna and Kayne West. He broaden his spectrum by adding Cold Play to his label he understood the game like no other rap artist before him. Diversifying his portfolio he added a clothing line and fragrance to his ventures and became the President for a time of Def Jam Records. After leaving Def Jam Jay made history by signing a 0 million deal with Live Nation a live events company and concert promoter. And if that deal wasn’t sweet enough he married Beyonce the biggest female in music game right now. Jay-Z knows a good thing when he sees one and is one of the smartest rappers in the game that is why he is the king of Swag.

6.  Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry came out the gate running and hasn’t looked back since. He didn’t play by Hollywood’s rules he made his own rules. Mr. Perry went from living out of his car to a tiny apartment to now being one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. He started a movement with his stage plays 12 in all and parlayed his talent and huge stage play following into the big screen and made Madea a household name. Now 8 films later Tyler Perry is the main man. When he couldn’t get Hollywood to green light his films he banked them himself and the rest is Cinema history. Then showing Hollywood that he didn’t need their studios Tyler Perry built his own television & movie studio the first African-American to own his studio. His films have grossed an unprecedented  0 million worldwide proving that an all African American cast can not only carry a film but open at No. 1.  Perry himself earned over million in 2008.  James Upshaw, President & CEO of Jay-Live Entertainment says of Perry,  “He broke ground and got black people back out to plays and movies. He proved Hollywood wrong that blacks could produce a number 1 movie and get people in the theaters.” Besides the films and plays Perry also produces two television shows, “The House of Payne” and “Meet the Brown” both out of his Tyler Perry Studios. Now that’s Hollywood!

5. Beyonce

She goes by one name Beyonce. She burst on the scene with her girl group Destiny’s Child. Weathered the storm when the group started to fall apart and came back better & stronger with a new member. But it was her solo debut “Crazy In Love” that let people know that Beyonce was here to stay. No one doubted her star power but just in case there were doubters she starred in Dream girls, put out two more solo projects and in the middle of all that rejoined her group for another album. In 2009 Beyonce took her career to new heights she put on one of the biggest grossing concerts of the year, and had one of the most downloaded and performed song of the year with “Single Ladies”.  An icon in the making there isn’t much that Beyonce can’t do. Not only did her album “I Am…Sasha Fierce” go triple-platinum, she starred in two movies, had a number 1 movie and sang for our President and first lady. Beyonce had a hell of a year and there seems to be no stopping her. She is consider one of the hardest working women in the music industry and if she has her way this decade is only a taste of what’s to come from Beyonce.

4. Will Smith

He is actor, producer, rapper, family man and activist. He is Will Smith superstar actor & rapper with more charisma than not. Will has blazed a trail in Hollywood that many would not have foreseen years earlier but Will knew something we didn’t he had “It.” And that “It” combined with personality for days is what draws people out to the box office. So much so that he is according to Entertainment Weekly “the smartest actor in Hollywood.” He has become one of the most powerful working actors in Hollywood and his name attached to a project carries clout. He is the only actor to ever open 8 consecutive movies at No. 1 all grossing over 0 million each. No other star can boast those figures, hailing   Newsweek to call him “the most powerful actor

on the planet.” Off the screen his family life is the envy of many Hollywood families because Will and his wife Jada keep the family first in the midst of their many projects. The little fresh prince of Bel Air has become Big Will of the big screen.

3. Tiger Woods

Despite his off the court woes this past decade no other athlete in the World tops Woods as the best athlete around. When he is on his game he is simply the best period! Ranked as No. 1 player in golf he is the highest paid athlete in any sport. His stats cannot be debated and Woods is only 34 he is not even in his prime. Woods has won an impressive 14 major golf championships the 2nd highest of any male golf player. Another 71 PGA Tournaments third of all time and is the youngest player to achieve career grand slams. He is also the youngest to win 50 tournaments on tour. And according to Joe Fishback, former NFL Safety & sports editor, “Despite personal problems recently, Tiger is the best athlete of our generation.” Others add to that sentiment, AP has named him “Athlete of the Year” a record tying 4 times. And he is the only athlete to ever be named Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsman of the year” more than once.

2. Oprah Winfrey

Oprah! Oprah! Oprah! Is there anyone bigger with more power and who can turn someone into a millionaire or star by having him or her on her show. The answer is no.  Ms. Winfrey would have been our number one person of the decade had her Chicago neighbor hadn’t made history by becoming the President. No one woman or person for that matter has had more of an impact on America. She has changed lives; she has turned Nate, Rachael Ray, Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil into household names. She delved into publishing launching O Magazine and O at home magazine. Her Oprah.com site receives an unheard of 70 million views per month. She garnered a 3-year deal with Satellite radio for a reported million dollars. Her little show that could is the highest ranked program of it’s time in history. The Oprah Winfrey Show is broadcast in over 140 countries with 14 million daily viewers. Oprah herself is ranked the richest black woman on the planet. Her Harpo studios has released major movies, movies made for television, television specials and put out shows for Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz and Rachel Ray. And just when we thought Oprah could do no more she opened the “Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls” in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her giving has no boundaries; the Oprah angel Network has raised more than ,000,000.  And in 2008 Oprah acquired her own cable network called OWN (The Oprah Winfrey Network) which will debut later this year and will be available in over 70 million homes. She is not only the Queen of talk she is our Queen.

1. President Barack Obama

How do you top the rise of a junior senator who goes on to become our 44th and first African American President? You don’t that is why President Barack Obama is our number one. He came into national attention at the Democratic national convention when he delivered the primetime keynote address and he has been a raising star every since. Two books later and the Presidential election under his belt he continues to electrify the World. And to punctuate that matter he was given the Noble Peace Prize laureate in 2009. Well done Mr. President!

Washington Cremation How Dying Persons Teach Us to Live After Cremation

March 18th, 2010

Washington Cremation

As I learned firsthand when I was widowed, little else can dislodge you from the world you know like the loss of your spouse. Whether death was sudden or came after a long illness, those of us who lose a spouse to death move quickly in the minds of others from the category of “married” to “widowed.” But a change of label doesn’t begin to compare to the challenge of restructuring your life following such an enormous change. I hope that some of the words that can serve as a helpful “letter” from an understanding supporter.

Working Your Way Through

It is important to remember in working with your grief that no one’s story of loss and grief is the same as the next person’s. There will be some similarities, but each relationship with a spouse is different, and each person’s history with loss is unique to them. In a sense, you are blazing new trail for yourself. Being a widow is not something we choose. It is something, however, that can be a defining moment for who we will become. The people around you will react in different ways. Many friends and acquaintances will call. Some you may find helpful, others difficult to listen to. Some may have useful suggestions for how you should take care of yourself and deal with your grief. Some are at a loss, knowing there is little they can say or do to remove the pain, shock, anger and sadness you may be experiencing. Others may want to call and be with you, but are too uncomfortable to do so. Some of your friends may even be afraid deep down that if you have lost your spouse perhaps they too could be in your shoes all too soon. This is a time of patience with yourself and others. That may be a difficult assignment for you at a time when you have little energy or patience to spare from your grieving. Here are some things to consider during this period of change and transition that may help.

You Will Need to Renegotiate Everything

This idea came to me when I realized that whatever my life was before, whatever my routines were, who my friends were, whatever I thought was “fun”-it all would need to be examined and experienced in a new way-as a person on my own. Even though I was doing the same things as before, such as grocery shopping, everything was different: I was now only shopping for one. In fact, when I tried to go to the store where my husband and I had shopped together, I found that it was too difficult. I had to change to a different supermarket in order to better care for myself. Remember that some friends, particularly couples, may feel awkward being with you alone, without your spouse at your side. You will eventually decide, as will these couples, if your relationship can sustain the loss of your spouse. The more you can remember that everything is different and that you will need to reshape your relationships, the easier it will be emotionally, physically and spiritually to move forward. You will feel vulnerable in this process of change. That is an important reality to accept. You are vulnerable and if you can own this feeling and care of yourself accordingly, you will be taking a big step in the right direction.

Realize Grief Has a Was Recurring

Grief will come and go. It will deplete and at times exhaust your sources of energy, so make allowances for that. Lower some expectations on what you can accomplish in a day. Pay attention to how grief presents itself. If you feel like crying, for example, give yourself the time and space to cry. Your tears are a valuable reflection of the importance of a relationship that has been forever changed. If you can accept the grief as it presents itself, it is less likely to affect you in a negative way. “One step at a time, one day at a time, it all became better by accepting, receiving and moving forward.” People find different sources of support that work for them. For some, that will mean going to a grief support group, ideally one specifically for people who have lost their spouses. For others, it will mean spending more time with their family, or time alone to journal what is running through their minds. You may find that being with particular people or couples is soothing. Perhaps a mix of all of the above is what will work best for you. Allow yourself to be as you are in the moment, and spend time with those who allow you to do so without question or judgment. Some people may be uncomfortable with who you need to be to grieve. Be aware of your personal needs and resources each day and thoughtfully choose whom to spend time with each day.

Be Open to Support

Being a nurse, I am usually the one in the role of assisting others. When my husband died, I learned over time the value of being supported. One of the biggest stressors for me following the death of my husband was t hat I could not pray. What a time to have difficulty with prayer! It did not take me long to figure out t hat if I went to church each morning, I was in the midst of those who were praying-therefore, so was I. I would sit in the back of church and cry. Most everyone there understood. Some would cry with me, and others would stop by and offer a hug. Some would offer to go with me for a bite to eat or a cup of coffee. My closest friends from grade school, without my realizing it, took turns every week calling me to see how I was doing. They connected with each other to compare notes and see what they thought would be best for me, and then would come back to me with invitations to lunch, visits or reminiscing. My friends from college would also regularly check in and sometimes suggest a visit to a spa or lunch as a means of connecting. Most of the time, I was able to receive this support with a sense of gratitude. It offered me ways to connect with others that I may not have needed or desired in the past. Now these connections were most important to feeling a part of a larger network of people who cared.

Encourage Yourself to Move From a Place of Grieving

Soon after losing my husband, there were times when I was immobilized by grief. With little energy to spare and a dulled sense of self awareness, as well as what appeared to be decreased options, all I could manage sometimes was just to sit or slowly make my way around the house aimlessly. At those times, it took an effort to make the simplest plan and carry it out. Each time I was successful with the most basic of plans, however, it encouraged me to continue and address some other area of need in my daily life. I learned I had to give myself time to make the simplest of decisions. Grief would often express itself, but slowly and surely I allowed myself to feel the grief and deal with it, yet continue to move forward and not be immobilized. One step at a time, one day at a time, it all became better by accepting , receiving and moving through it.

Take Heart

If I can leave you with one final thought in my “letter,” dear reader, it is this: Gratitude is a very important feeling to work into your daily life. Be grateful for all you have received and experienced in your life. Also be grateful for all the possibilities the future holds for you. (if you have difficulty in identifying those possibilities, perhaps that’s where you can all on trusted others to assist you in the process.) Thank God every day for the time you had with your spouse and the wonderful memories you will always have. Focus each day on the smallest thanksgiving. Each day will then become an opportunity for a new beginning to all that you now will become!

Washington Personal Injury Lawyer Discusses Paying for Medical Bills When You Have Suffered from Another Person?s Negligence

February 26th, 2010

One of the first things that anyone would do after sustaining injuries because of the negligence of another person is to figure out how they will pay the medical bills. The question focuses on what are the options at an individual’s disposal to get compensation for what happened to them?

Each state of the U.S. has its own laws governing personal injury lawsuits or claims. The reason that so many personal injury compensation issues end up as claims is that today’s society is very heavily insured. The majority of drivers have auto insurance covering their liability on the road. The majority of businesses both large and small have operational policies covering both worker’s compensation and injuries to customers or others in public spaces. The majority of homeowners have insurance that also may cover injuries to individuals that happened on their properties.

The amazing thing is that even though insurance functionally covers all of these areas, so many Americans have trouble getting compensation to pay their medical bills when something happens to them. As mentioned, the rules are different in every state. In the state of Washington—where urban areas like Seattle and Spokane serve huge populations—it’s clear that the complexity of personal injury law often leads to individual citizens hiring Washington personal injury lawyers to help them obtain the compensation they need for paying medical networks after they have been injured.

A simple look at some of the main personal injury situations in the state of Washington will show some of the ways that personal injury legal teams get quick payment for their customers. Specifically, many of the injuries sustained by individuals are caused on the road. For a better look at what happens when car accident victims seek personal injury compensation, Washington residents should look at state laws on the auto insurance policies that most drivers carry.

For example, if you bought auto insurance coverage in Washington, you may know that state auto insurers are required to offer what’s called uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage to policyholders. What you may not know is that according to Washington state legal experts, these companies are also required to hold waivers of proof of customers who have turned down this coverage. Without the waiver, a driver who is not covered may be granted coverage at the time of the accident.

What this means to those who understand insurance lingo is that there are many cases where an insurance company has to provide uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage retroactively to their clients when they are victims in a car accident.

Another issue in many personal injury claims is what’s called an adversarial nature. The other side of this is what some legal professionals refer to as a good faith contract. What both of these really mean is that too many insurance companies deny or delay claims or do not work in the interest of a personal injury victim. Many personal injury victims hire legal teams, such as The Bernard Law Group lead by Kirk Bernard, to be effective advocates for them in interpreting and implementing all of the applicable insurance laws and other areas of the law that will help them get money to pay off the hospitals and doctors that they sought services from after an accident. Regardless of whether this accident was caused on or off the road, personal injury legal teams are very often the best vehicle for families who may face medical debts because of the situation that they did not cause. For more on these kinds of situations in the state of Washington or other states, ask local legal teams about your injury and what options you may have.
