Spokane Realtors and Washington State New Cell Phone Law

Spokane Realtors and Washington State New Cell Phone Law

On July 1, 2008 Washington State’s new ban on cell phone use went into effect. Anyone who has experienced an accident or near accident with someone who was talking on a cell phone while driving is likely to be pleased. It is also illegal to text while driving. Apparently it is difficult to watch the road and the little buttons on a phone at the same time. With this new law Washington has joined four other states (California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York) in banning their use while driving. Now, Washingtonians must use an ear piece if they must drive and talk on the phone. It is permissible to press the answer button, but that’s all.

While California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York all have driving and talking on a cell phone as a primary offense, it is only a secondary offense in Washington. A police officer must observe some other driving infraction to give a citation and then may add the cell phone use as an additional charge.

As an interesting coincidence, I was walking my Airedale Terrier for her three mile walk along the river road the other day, two days into the new law becoming effective, and was nearly hit by hit by three different drivers who all happened to be talking on the phone. I had to laugh to myself and say, well if I don’t like their driving I can stay off the sidewalk.

Realtors and other sales people who spend a lot of time driving will feel the effect of this law. The cell phone has become ubiquitous and essential for those who must stay in communication at all times in order to earn a living. Customers do not want to have to wait for information in this day and age.

Cell phone kiosks and wireless stores have been doing blockbuster business in wireless Blue Tooth headsets. Many people wonder what took so long. Why did it take an act of legislature to drive safely and respectfully of other people on the road. I know my wife said I could drive and text a long time ago.

To all of you sales people and realtors, especially you who drive in Spokane Washington selling all that real estate get a wireless headset soon. Otherwise you may have a 1 additional fine to your otherwise ignorable driving offenses. Now all we have to worry about is the cancer causing radio frequencies looped over the ear all day.

Jim Grapes is a Realtor and represents homebuyers looking for homes for sale in Spokane, Washington. Before his career selling Spokane real estate he served in the US Navy as a Supply Officer on many ships and stations around the globe.

Day 338: Love My Phone – Listening to Music

Some cool Internet Radio images:

Day 338: Love My Phone – Listening to Music
Internet Radio

After the students had left, I still had work to do. I graded some 100-Fact Multiplication tests, cleaned the board, cleaned the used overhead transparencies, posted student work outside the door (maps made using parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines and solar system booklets), planned assignments for tomorrow, and ran copies of worksheets. While I was working, I listened to Southern Gospel singing/music on my Internet Radio coming over my Treo Smartphone. It certainly made the work go by faster.
I took this photo with my husband’s camera. He had asked me to download some photos from the card and upload to flickr. I wasn’t able to do that because my card reader didn’t have an XD card slot. I’d left that card reader at home; so, I’ve ordered another card reader that does include an XD slot to keep in my purse. Has anyone else noticed that card readers don’t last very long? They die quite often for me.

Ah, the good ol’ days. Mark Cuban and I both botch our predictions about the mass appeal of internet radio and are outed by some crappy radio industry rag. Circa 1999. Cuban went on to become a billionaire who can’t dance and of course today nobody listens to audio on the internet.

Q&A: Will satellite radio or internet radio through a cell phone work in a concrete building?

January 23rd, 2011

Question by Teekee Weekee: Will satellite radio or internet radio through a cell phone work in a concrete building?
I recently got a job at the dept of revenue, and have run through my ipod, and am tired of the radio. I have sirius in my car and love it and was wondering if the stiletto would work inside my work. If not could i get an iphone or something, and would that be able to receive the internet it needs?

Best answer:

Answer by PlaysTooMuch
I’m not sure about internet radio through a cell phone – it depends on whether your cell phone browser works in the area. However, unless you have window access, I pretty much doubt the satellite radio will work. Our XM receiver sits on a window sill and sometimes cuts out when a big truck drives by and limits the direct line to the sky.

Good luck!

WKYS has been one of the DC areas premeired radio stations for several decades. At one time it really was a progressive station. They weren’t afraid to mix genres as long as you could dance to it. Here’s a clip from early 1980 as the Police’s “Voices In My Head” leads into Yarborough and People’s “Don’t Stop the Music” with DJ bante afterward. If a DJ played the Police on WKYS TODAY, he’d be SHOT.

Unique Hybrid Technology
Ovi Maps is built on an advanced technology called hybrid vector maps. Vector maps are high quality but less data intensive and allow you to continue to navigate even if you lose your network connection. This means that maps downloaded or updated across a network connection are about half the size of bulky bitmaps used by other mobile map providers. The hybrid technology ensures that, unlike other providers, any downloaded map data is stored on the device for future use.

No Network Connection Required When Navigating
Avoid expensive, battery-draining network connections with Nokia’s unique hybrid technology. Maps can be pre-loaded onto your Nokia smartphone so you can set Ovi Maps to offline mode, saving battery power, and the navigation system will still work. This is particularly useful for those worried about data connection costs when travelling abroad, or when you are travelling through areas with little or no network coverage.

Best Global Coverage
You take your mobile with you wherever you go in the world so, as standard, voice guided navigation for both pedestrians and drivers is available for 74 countries in 46 different languages and there are maps for over 180 countries. This gives you the best maps with the largest global coverage for free.

RIAA + Broadcasters Lobbying For FM Radio In Every Cell Phone, PDA

Web access via your cell phone or PDA is a common capability these days, and from the music industry’s standpoint, that’s great; webcasters already pay full performance rights fees for the music they stream. It’s also pretty common for MP3 players to have built-in FM radio receivers, and so of course it was only a matter of time before the radio people said, “Hey — we could have it all!”

Meanwhile, the RIAA would also like to see old-fashioned radio expanded into cell phones and PDA’s, because not only would the exposure presumably boost album sales, but they’ve been trying to squeeze performance rights fees out of broadcasters for years. If radio’s audience expands through phones and PDA’s, so would the money the RIAA could get from broadcasters. This has turned out to be especially true because the Consumer Electronics Association isn’t too keen on the idea, and they certainly don’t like to be told what to do. It would take the beefy hand of Congress to get gadget-makers to fall in line, and so a common enemy has made for an awkward partnership: the RIAA and the National Association of Broadcasters have joined forces to ask Congress to override the CEA and mandate FM receiver chips into every cell phone and PDA.

It’s a pretty slick play on the part of the RIAA. The NAB has agreed to pony up roughly 0 million a year in royalties in exchange for the expanded audience that would come from mandated radio chips in the handheld devices. The princely sum is well more then the nothing they’ve paid up to this point, but still less then they’d feared the RIAA could get if its efforts toward performance rights legislation proved successful. The CEA ain’t takin’ it lying down, though. Ars Technica quotes CEA president Gary Shapiro as fuming, “The backroom scheme of the [National Association of Broadcasters] and RIAA to have Congress mandate broadcast radios in portable devices, including mobile phones, is the height of absurdity.” We’ll see how it all plays out when Congress reconvenes this fall.
