What kind of a radio should I get to listen ATC at my home or on the go?

May 24th, 2012

Question by Adam: What kind of a radio should I get to listen ATC at my home or on the go?
I was going to buy a 40 channel radio but I decided not to because I didn’t know if you could switch the frequency or if they are built into the system already.
I would like a radio under $ 50…
Any Ideas?

What do you mean “ATC”

If by 40 channel radio you mean a CB radio, those are hard coded for the 40 allocated CB channels.

The Two-Way Radio

May 23rd, 2012

We do not intend to delve deeply into the two-way Radio, only a bird eye view. We would want to accept the fact that it is one of the developmental stages of the mobile cell phone as we know it today especially in the form of the hand held Walkie Talkies. While a broadcast receiver (Receiver Radio) can only receive broadcast content only, the two-way Radio can receive and also transmit content. In other words it is a transceiver.

There are three forms of the two-way Radio.

(1) The” genetic” mobile two -way Radio which gave birth to the modern Mobile Cell phone. It has the ability to receive and transmit simultaneously.

(2)The stationary two-way Radio which is the basis of the modern Cellular BASE stations and the pivot on which the modern day phone system operate. It may be pertinent to let you know that Distance calling by mobile cell phones is only made possible by a network of cells. A cell is a BASE station (High rise Towers) with its coverage area. For a mobile phone A to call a distant phone B, phone A must first connect its nearest base station which in turn connect phone B through its nearest base station. This is why these phones are called CELL PHONES. Note that cell phones are also Two way Radios.

(3)The hand held portable two-way Radio more commonly called the Walkie Talkies or Handie Talkies.

TYPES OF TWO WAY RADIOS. Different systems, technologies and types are available. However, they are of two major forms, the Family Radio Service-FRS and the General Mobile Radio Service GMRS models.

1. The Family Radio Service model FRS: This model which is characterized by a lower power of half watt can only support a maximum range of about 6miles in ideal conditions It is built to transmit on a total of 14 channels which include 7 FRS channels and 7 shared FRS/GMRS channels.

2. General Mobile Radio Service- GMRS: Characterized by a higher power, (usually between 1 and 2 watts) this Radio is for outdoor use. The Radio has 22 channels and the signal can travel on either FRS or GMRS bands. However since consumers want more channels and prefer the 22 channel Radio to the 14 channels, most radios now have all 22 FRS and GMRS channels available in manufacturers’ response to market demand.

CHOOSING A TWO WAY RADIO, WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.

THE RANGE: The range of a two way Radio refers to the maximum distance between two Radios for effective communication. A two way Radio of 5miles range can only make effective communication if the distance between the two communicating Radios is less than 5miles. Therefore, the higher the range, the better the radio. Unfortunately however, the only way to know the range before buying as sellers are not likely to allow a physical test which might involve opening the pack, is to rely on the specification on the packing label. One wonders if the manufacturers are out to play their customers in view of the fact that what is given is hardly correct. That such values are for ideal conditions may however be partially responsible. Achieving good line of sight free from blocking materials such as trees, wall, rock etc is desirable for effective reception. These are some of the necessary factors to achieve an ideal condition. All these can hardly be achieved in nature. The only option left to give us an idea of the Range is the ANTENNA.

THE ANTENNA: A good antenna will not only increase the range but also improve reception. Generally, the bigger the antenna the better it is However, it most not be too bogus to cause discomfort in our pockets. POWER: The higher the power, the higher the range. While a radio of half power could have a range of 6miles, that of between 1-2 power could have a range of say 25miles.

AVAILABLE FEATURES: There are varied features as much as we have different manufacturers and consumers. The fact is that if you want more features, then be ready to pay more. The following are some of the features common with modern two way Radios.

(1)Calling and paging features. (2)keypad lock (3)Headset jack for phones, etc.

Radio Calling? Explore Careers on the Airwaves

May 22nd, 2012

Much has been said about making a career in radio and all we can think of is a Radio Jockey. The general perception is that if you have an ear for radio and a passion for music, all you need is to tune into your favorite radio channel. However, a huge world of radio also lies beyond jockeying for FM channels. If you have a nose for informing people, then radio is the place you ought to be.

Besides jockeying, radio offers many other career options that can do wonders to please one’s creative needs and provide professional satisfaction. These roles include script writer, producer, actors, audio engineers, news readers, announcers and the like. Here is a brief description of the roles of several jobs in radio:

1. Script writer: Every radio programme that is aired needs a proper script. A script is written according to the time allotted to each programme. So, say for a half-an-hour programme, a script writer has to be very strict with using the number of words that would fit exactly to the programme length. Given the fact that no radio programme is devoid of background music and music makes for some time in between the programme, script writing becomes a vigilant job.

2. Producer: One who produces an idea is the producer. The role of a producer demands making of a programme completely – from generating ideas to deciding on the music and to finally getting it aired. Besides this, a producer also looks after radio show formats, co-ordinates with guests, briefs callers and sees if the show is aired on time. So, if you think you can perform these key roles with an effective approach to communication, the seat of producer might just be waiting for you.

3. Audio engineers: An audio engineer has a crucial role to play in a radio station. No radio show can go live without the assistance of radio or audio engineers. They are supposed to maintain the audio input in a show. They should know when to lower the audio level, when to bring it to the foreground and when to keep it subtle. If something goes wrong with the broadcast, then it’s only the promptness of audio engineers that ensures we listen to some filler music; instead of blankness.

4. Music directors: For this role, one must be familiar with all genres of music across the world. This is so because a music director has the onus of selecting music for a radio show. Music is an integral part of radio as in the absence of visuals, it’s only music that maintains the continuity of any radio programme. So, a music director must be wise enough to decide on the background score, theme music, opening and closing music for a radio show. For instance, a programme on the career of Beatles would only appeal to the listener’s ear if it’s accompanied with the music from their album.

5. Actors: It sounds quite unusual but radio stations too have actors. If the passion for acting runs in your veins and you are trying hard to make an appearance on the silver screen, think twice before you spend your whole life craving for it. Radio might give you the chance, for, radio plays, radio documentaries and the like have become common phenomenon in the booming radio industry. Just go ahead and lend your voice!

With community radios and satellite radios, radio is another big avenue and perhaps one of the major revolutions in the communication industry. Identify where you fit in this industry – as a listener, as an entertainer or as an informer? It’s time to tune in now!
