Why should the Federal government have the ability to preside over issues like abortion and same-sex rights?

June 4th, 2011

Question by Viktor-Ron Paul 2008!!: Why should the Federal government have the ability to preside over issues like abortion and same-sex rights?
Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, The Death Penalty, Education, etc. should all be in the hands of the states! Why should the government be able to make decisions on these issues, point on point. Who’s saying our Federal Government has the best judgment? Let the people decide on these issues in their respect states, and create state competition. Why do we tolerate the government in our lives, in social issues such as these?
Does not the tenth amendment state that all rights not mentioned in the Constitution belong exclusively to the states or the people?

I think its horrible that our federal Govt trys to stick its hands in everything.
To askers added comment
Yes it does. That is one reason I Love Ron Paul. He does not vote for anything not expressly mentioned in the Constition, because as a legislator on the Federal level it is not his place to. WoW. Dr. No . I love it that one man actually Abides by the Constition. For over 20 yrs too. His voting record is easily researched. I love that although he personally does not think same sex marriage is ok, he voted No on A Federal Same Sex Marriage Ban because its not the federal govts job to define that. Thats integrity.

Democrats are just as responsible as Republicans for the Mess that our government has become. They both bear equal blame as do the people who vote on silly things like name recognition.
Calvin Republicans are no longer the party of Small Government. They have aquired a love of throwing money at things to fix them. Which is what republicans used to say about democrats. Somewhere along the line people who were social conservatives but Big Govt liberals enterd therepublican party claiming to be conservatives when in fact they are just conservatives socially. The popular word for these people are Neo Cons. Read “Where The Right Went Wrong” by Patrick J Buchanan to read more about the beginings of the Neo Con movement and how they hijacked the Republican Party. The Party of “Small Government”

What time should I leave to get to Washington DC from NYC and what is the average cost?

May 3rd, 2011

Question by sweets: What time should I leave to get to Washington DC from NYC and what is the average cost?
I’m planning on leaving NYC to visit Washington DC this weekend. I would leave around 7pm on Friday the 5th and return home on Sunday some time. Im still debating on if I should drive or find some other means of transportation. Could you give me an average cost of how much the tolls would cost me? and Just how bad is the traffic?

Is there a website that would do these calculations for me. I know nothing would be 100% but an estimate would be great.

Best answer:

Answer by ckm1956
Traffic in DC can be horrible.

Look into AmTrak from NY to DC. Easier and no worries about traffic.

The subway/train system is really easy to use. You can get around quickly. Like NY, the trains can be crowded at times, but it’s better than the traffic.

Should Radio Stations Play 24/7 Christmas Music?

Should Radio Stations Play 24/7 Christmas Music?

SHOULD RADIO STATIONS PLAY 24/7 CHRISTMAS MUSIC?
by Dan O’Day The question I’ve been asked is, “How do you feel when a radio station abandons its format for 24/7 Christmas programming?” Although this goes against what many people want to hear, it’s a bad idea. With the possible exception of a Christian radio station, it damages your station’s brand. Assuming we’re talking about a mainstream, secular radio station, you are damaging your brand. People turn to your station expecting to get the same product every singe day — whatever that product is. If you air 24/7 Christmas music programming for the two weeks surrounding Christmas, you’ll receive a flurry of phone calls and emails from people thanking you from the bottoms of their hearts: “Thank you so much! This is so wonderful. It’s such a pleasure. I can’t hear this music anywhere else.” Those remarks are sincere, but they do not necessarily represent your core audience. Some of those listeners may be among your P1s, but there’s no reason to assume most of them are. And perhaps NONE of them is among your P1s. So you get a flurry of excitement and of goodwill, and maybe some of your advertisers say good things, but for that time period you are driving away your core audience. No matter how you like Christmas music, not everyone wants to hear it a lot. For some people, hearing “Little Drummer Boy” more than once per decade is too much. For fans of your radio station who tune in for a period of time but do not receive the promise your station makes to them, you’re hurting your brand.

Should Local Governments in Nigeria be Scrapped?

April 15th, 2011

Should Local Governments in Nigeria be Scrapped?

Precisely 774 Local Governments exists today in Nigeria but it doubtful indeed if these local governments have lived up to expectations in the development of our country Nigeria. Three tier of government as inherited from the British have come under heavy criticisms from the citizens of Nigeria some of who are now angrily suggesting that the three tier of government be expunged from the nation’s system of government.

A new and sad dimension in the elections of officers into the third tier have just begun, and it would seem that this government at the local levels have inherited from its sisterly federal arm of government the art of selection of candidates and political officers into positions. What happened in Lagos State clearly points to the fact that who should rule in the grass root government was absolutely a decision to be determined by the ruling party or reigning state government. Firstly, the road to the said election of officers for the Local Government began with the handpicking of candidates with absence of any known criteria in the party membership of Action Congress (AC) Action Congress became a model in this business.

No primaries were held, yet party representatives emerged from the blues and honourably defeated all other contestants. Sadly again, we the electorates did not who the candidates whom we had the option of voting for but suddenly began to see posters all around the walls of Lagos, funnily after first sets of posters of campaigners have been seen. We therefore began to wonder who the legitimate candidates of Action Congress were. It amount to the 8th wonder of the modern world if the results of the elections held is pointing to the fact that every of the candidates of Action Congress were acceptable to the generality of Lagosians and in all the localities not minding whether these candidates were known or not.

In the end announcements were made that Action Congress had swept councillorship and chairmanship positions available in the state. The pressmen who were at the event to cover this report and probably the Attorney General of the Federation can tell us more on the event. What this portends for democracy at the grass roots is better imagined than explained here for we all know perfectly well that Lagos serves as a model for all the states of the federation and an idea of emergence of candidates without primaries and candidates of any particular political party winning every available positions could be emulated much to our chagrin.

This brings us to the question of the relevance of the Local Government in Nigeria, time may not permit to delve into its functions as provided for by the constitution of the nation but the sincere ones among us can definitely tell that not one of any Local Government in existence in the country today can boast of making wholesome achievements in this regard. At best, the best vibrant Local Government Area in Lagos is set at seeking every means of extracting the residents of the state in the name of taxation without ever giving back to them.

Once caught on any road as a motorist in the state, what the very first information issued to you is go pay this form of tax for three years and come back for discussions pertaining to your vehicle, the main reason you have been nabbed right or wrong. One is also expected to pay tax even for the air he breaths in Lagos but the question is what do we get back from the Local Governments?

The status of certain settlements in the state are even confusing, for Festac and Satellite town made to sit under two different Local Governments in the state, analysts have the time have wondered whether Festac town posses Federal, State or Local Government status such that should warrant the payment of tenement rates, market rates and other forms of taxes. There are no cemeteries to repair or take care in the town to take care of, no provision of drinkable water, lights are not provided by either the state or the Local Governments yet the people are forcefully put under the oath of tax payment. No single court exists at the local level in the town. The maintenance of the Estate is not carried out by either the federal, state or Local Government yet the headquarters of the Amuwo Odofin Local Government is located in the town.

The Estate has some of the most deplorable roads in Lagos which now cannot be accessed during rainy seasons yet we are told we are under local government and need to pay our tenement rates and ground rents. This situation is very appalling to the residents of the Estate.

Local Governments have been described as money sharing ventures with no feasible purpose to carry out with nothing to show as there are lapses in administration worsened by lack of checks and balances. Many people in the country do not even know the counselors and chairpersons representing them, which is terrible.

The Federal Government should begin to take closer looks on this government at the grass roots and ensure that people at the rural areas benefit immensely with water, roads and other facilities, stringent efforts should also be made to articulate new and better means of carrying out elections at this level to effectively distribute fairness and equity to all the parties involved. Only these will answer whether the operation of Local Governments should be retained in the country.

How far should she stand from the Washington Monument?

March 12th, 2011
Washington Monument
by wallyg

Question by Kelley: How far should she stand from the Washington Monument?
A student has built a 20-cm-long pinhole camera for a science fair project. She wants to photograph the Washington Monument, which is 167 m (550 ft) tall, and to have the image on the film be 5.0 cm high.

How far should she stand from the Washington Monument?

Best answer:

Answer by Shriram
Imagine the figure yourself.
We have the focal length = 0.2m
The required image size is 0.05m
Let the building height be 167m
Let the distance of the building from PC be x.
This distance can be found by considering the two similar triangles formed. Refer your own figure for details because its self explanatory.

Then x/167=0.2/0.05
x=668m, pretty far isnt it!

I hope you are satisfied.
