Out Of Band Management Systems

If you are an IT professional, you understand the important of console management systems for secure off-site management of network devices, servers and routers.  In the IT world, there are two types of console management systems available to remotely access servers and networks: out of band and in band.  Out of band management has become the preferred method of managing consoles because it eliminates the limitations that are found in an in band application.  Also referred to as lights out or LOM management systems, out of band systems allow IT administrators to perform a variety of updates and types of maintenance on network devices from an off-site location whether to computer or device is powered on or off.

Because LOM systems work off of a separate channel as opposed to regular Ethernet data channels, the remote access is not compromised when systems malfunction or the when the server is experiencing technical difficulties.  This allows IT administrators to access the servers and routers without limitations to address the problem and fix it within a timely fashion.  In-band systems work quite the opposite.  In-band systems generally use the Ethernet channels to manage devices and can be limited when system problems occur.  Because out of band management systems are isolated from these regular channels, they have become preferred for corporations who manage their consoles off-site.

The LOM system uses hardware referred to as an LOM module to monitor a number of different system variables for all of the devices connected to the network.  A remote operation including system reboots, shutdowns, troubleshooting and those who have authorization to access devices within the network can perform application installation off-site.  Each device in the network will be connected to a console server to monitor the individual device’s hardware and gain console access remotely.  This feature is not found in an in-band system, which proves further limitations.

Most corporations prefer investing in a management system because they can have a remote data center that is dedicated to monitoring systems and providing IT troubleshooting tips and repairs.  In today’s economy, businesses are trying to buckle down on their budgets and lower costs in every way possible.  While the initial investment to roll out an out of band management system may be high, the lowered operational costs more than make up for this investment.  By eliminating the need for an IT technician to be physically present to perform basic duties, costs of employees and traveling expenses are reduced.  While there will be a need for IT professionals to visit satellite offices to set up networks physically, managing these systems is far more effective with remote access solutions.  Understand the difference between console management systems and choose hardware and applications that are best suited for your company.

There are many drinking water purification systems used by public treatment facilities in an attempt to improve public health. But, most of us have realized that there are some issues that can only be addressed with a home drinking water purification system.

My biggest concern is the increased cancer risk from the by-products of chemical disinfection. They are referred to as THMs or TTHMs on a quality report. Wherever public drinking water purification systems use chlorine for disinfection, the by-products are present. In fact, the most recent research seems to indicate that no matter what type of disinfection is employed, whether it is UV light or a chemical other than chlorine, the by-products are present.

So, once you realize that you need a drinking water purification system, you have to decide which purifier to use. There are a number of options.

For many years a point-of-use distillation was considered effective, but they cannot remove chemicals and THMs could still be released into the air during the distillation process. Distiller drinking water purification systems are only really necessary when there is bacterial contamination after a flood and then boiling filtered water would be just as effective.

A distillation drinking water purification system requires electricity to operate and production is very slow. Plus, drinking distilled on a regular basis is not good for your health because it is de-mineralized. The taste is poor and the cost to operate is about 26 cents per gallon.

Reverse osmosis drinking water purification systems were popular for a while, but there are more efficient, less expensive choices today. Reverse osmosis has some of the same disadvantages as distillation. It de-mineralizes, may not remove all chemical contaminants or odors and the taste is stale. RO does not remove THMs, for example.

The cost is about the same as distillation, but installation charges are typically more, depending on the size of the unit that you choose. A RO drinking water purification system takes up a lot of basement space because a water storage tank is necessary. Typically, they are larger than the average hot water heater.

Pitchers and carafe-style drinking water purification systems are better than nothing, since the better ones remove chlorine and lead. But, one again, there is no protection from THMs. The initial cost of purchase is low, but they cost as much per gallon as RO and distillation.

It’s kind of like the old Polaroid cameras. The camera itself was cheap, but the film cartridge cost nearly as much as the camera. The replacement cartridges for the pitchers cost about $ 25, about the same as a new pitcher. You may want to consider paying more for your drinking water purification system initially, and paying less per gallon.

Carbon block and granular carbon filters are the most common countertop and under-the-sink drinking water purification systems. Granular carbon filters and carbon block systems use the same process of contaminant removal, adsorption, by which the contaminant bonds chemically or physically to the surface of the filter medium. Activated carbon is recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as the best available technology for filtering chlorine, VOCs and THMs.

A multi-media block filter is the best choice for a drinking water purification system, in my opinion. A blended media is extruded or compressed into a solid form with a sub-micron pore structure to filter out sediment and cysts like Cryptosporidium and Giardia. This configuration also prevents water from channeling around the filter media.

For best performance it is essential that multi stage drinking water purification systems be used to filter out the widest range of contaminants. Drink purified. It’s the only way to go.

Satellite radio systems are the consumer’s access to space-based audio technology, offering uncensored, commercial-free programming that comes in crystal clear no matter where you are. But how do they actually work?

The most basic explanation is as follows: programming is transmitted to a communications space satellite, which beams a digital signal back to earth. The signal is encrypted, so it can only be picked up by special proprietary equipment. The signal can be broadcast across more than 22,000 miles and received by the end user with absolutely no degradation in clarity or sound quality.

But the basics are only a small part of what makes satellite radio systems work. Many innovations and the use of cutting-edge communications technology have brought digital radio a long way from where it began just over a decade ago.

Digital radio was actually operating in the early 1990s, with Washington-based Worldspace Corp. providing fixed-location satellite radio to Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. However the technology didn’t take off in the US until 1992, when the Federal Communications Commission established the Digital Audio Radio Service (DARS) which allocated certain segments of radio frequency for satellite broadcast.

Two companies bid for and won licences to broadcast in the allotted frequencies: American Mobile Radio, which later become XM Radio, paid $ 93 million for licensing, and Sirius Satellite Radio forerunner CD Radio paid $ 89 million. XM made it’s nationwide debut in 2001, and Sirius followed in 2002.

Though both companies offer more than 100 channels of commercial-free programming that’s available anywhere in the US, they took different technological routes to achieve universal coverage.

XM’s system relies on two powerful geostationary satellites positioned directly above the equator, which are programmed to move in synchronization with the movement of the earth. To overcome interference from physical obstacles such buildings and mountains, the XM service service relies on a network of repeaters, which are antennas that receive the radio signal from the satellites and retransmit it to the subscriber’s receiver.

The Sirius system is based on a trio of satellites that travel in figure-8 shaped orbits. Because these orbiting satellites can rise much higher than geostationary satellites, interference from physical objects is minimized and a large network of repeaters is unnecessary. To keep the signal steady during the eight hours that the Sirius satellites’ orbit takes them to the other side of the earth, the company leases capacity on a geostationary satellite which feeds the signal to subscribers.

Satellite radio service also depends on digital compression technology, a technique that uses sophisticated algorithms to compress as much material as possible on the available bandwidth.
