Washington Wizards Owner Promises to “Dougie” If Team Sells Out a Home Game
Wizards rookie point guard John Wall made headlines by dancing the “Dougie” during  pregame introductions before Washington’s home opener against the Philadelphia 76ers. Wall has drawn plenty of applause for his nimble feet and genuine smile, not to mention his outstanding early-season play.  But he has his share of detractors, too, including radio host Colin Cowherd, who somehow concluded that …

Should the Washington Nationals try to celebrate Walter Johnson’s career, as a way to bring attention to team?

May 2nd, 2010

Just an idea. They’re not having that good of a season. Johnson did play for the Washington team, and retired to live in Maryland. Widely considered one of the top 5 best baseball pitchers ever, and was First Ballot for Hall of Fame.

On the other hand, he’s been dead for about 60 years.

Five Tips for Team Building in Washington DC

March 18th, 2010

If you work in Washington DC or if you are leading a corporate team building retreat and you want to find somewhere fun to go where there are lots of team building opportunities, you should follow these tips to find fun team building exercises in DC.

Having a great sense of teamwork is so important for businesses. After all most people spend more time with their co-workers during the week than they do with their families. So having a strong sense of teamwork is essential, and there are lots of great ways to practice teambuilding in DC. No matter what activity you ultimately decide on to help you build your team’s confidence and trust, follow these tips to make them as strong as possible:

1. Set clear expectations — People perform the best in jobs where their job description and what is expected of them is crystal clear from the start. Outline the expectations that you have for each person and let them tell you their expectations for their jobs and their employers. Getting those expectations out on the table so that everyone knows what the other person expects is a great way to start team building in DC or anywhere else.

2. Stress communication — Team members need to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with one another. Any team building exercises that help teach people how to communicate more clearly and more effectively are a great way to work on teambuilding in DC.

3. Get creative — The best way to solve problems is to get creative. Team building exercises and retreats should help people develop creative problem-solving skills that can be used to help solve common problems so that the team won’t get frustrated and bogged down in small problems. When the group solves a problem as a team it can really give them a sense of community and teamwork.

4. Be a dependable leader — Every team needs a leader. A team leader should be the person that sets an example by communicating well, inspiring confidence, being someone that team members can come to with problems or for support, and a team leader should also find new and innovative ways to work on teambuilding at the home office so that employees are constantly finding new ways to improve their performance.

5. Set a clear mission — In order for a team to function effectively the entire team needs to know what their goals are. In sports the goal is to win the game and play well. In business the goals for the team need to be just as clear so that everyone on the team will know what they are working for.

Google, New York Times, Washington Post Team Up to Create Living Stories

March 14th, 2010

It was only last week that Google released “First Click Free,” a service that blocks avid users from taking advantage of Google to avoid pay walls. The move sought to strengthen Google’s historically tenuous relationship with the publishers. In another attempt to reconcile its relationship with mainstream media publishers, Google launched the Living Stories experiment. Google has partnered with The Washington Post and the New York Times to create Living Stories — a content aggregator specific to the publisher and topic.

Living Stories is a Google Lab experiment that ties together all major stories based on topic and publisher. Living Stories then organizes the topics in a timeline based on the most recently updated. For instance, “Washington Tackles Health Care Reform” is the topic presented by the Washington Post and was most recently updated an 31 minutes ago. Below it is the New York Times topic, “The Politics of Global Warming,” updated one hour ago.

When you click into a topic, you are directed to a co-branded page (Google and the publisher) that examines to topic even further. The top of the page summarizes the story and links in the sidebar outline common themes that you might want to explore. For instance, “Washington Tackles Health Care Reform” is divided into key events, people, images, etc. Furthermore, a timeline is assembled at below the summary — giving you highlights of the story.

One of the most exciting elements of this new lab is the updates. Google will close article summaries based on your viewing history. If you read “Senate rejects amendment on abortion,” only a headline will appear next time your visit. Moreover, if there is a development in the story, when you revisit the site it will be prominently displayed. This feature is inline with our Web Intelligence Trend — basically stating that the information we view on the web will become tailored to our browsing history.

This new feature is one of many attempts by newspapers and other…

Washington Huskies Tickets – Can Sarkisian Bring a New Vibe to the Team?

March 2nd, 2010

One individual can often bring about a change in fortunes of a team ? If this statement had to come true, then Washington Huskies definitely stand to gain a lot!

Here is a team that often in the last few games shown how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Looking at the kind of talent Washington Huskies possess, it really is surprising to see them languishing at any spot below the number 1 position. Huskies? supporters blame this on a defeatist attitude built up in the players of Huskies.

If that really is the case, consider a lot of talent wasted by the roadside. But with Sarkisian at the helm of the affairs, things could pan out differently for the Washington Huskies. For a change, Sarkisian himself is a man of no mincing words. From the day he arrives at the Huskies, he would make no bones of the fact that he would like to win at all costs. Maybe, this could be the impetus Huskies need.

Huskies for one, cannot boast of missing one thing ? Quality players. They have this through all the ranks. They have good quality offensive line players. They have quality running backs. They also have good quality receivers and defense line. Put all of them together, and be surprised that this team has lost so many matches. In essence, this could really be the rarest of rare cases when a team has all the fundamentals in place, yet is not able to deliver the goods consistently.

Yes, there is an odd victory here and there, but considering the quality of players Huskies have, this should be a frequent occasion, not an aberration. People who have been closely following the performance of Washington Huskies term this as individual complacence. People believe that players in the Huskies believe a lot in them but do not believe as a team. Statistically, the percentage of individual runs in Huskies? games is uncomfortably high. It could yet work out against a couple of teams, but in the long run, may prove dangerous.

Sarkisian for a change though has a problem, which if he wants, can be solved within a matter of days. For starters, he would have to get the team believing as a unit. He must make them think that winning matches is possibly more important than winning a few points here and there. Knowing Sarkisian and his background, this may not be a tough task. Or does it seem so?

You could wake up a person who is sleeping but try waking a person who is pretending to sleep? Given this statement, some hard decisions may be taken by Sarkisian. He has to take them in the best interests of the team, and there are no two ways about it. All said and done, it is for the world to see if Sarkisian can bring about change in fortunes of the Huskies. Well, looking at how Sarkisian manages things, this seems to be a reality!

Washington Wizards Team

February 24th, 2010

The Washington Wizards is a professional National Basketball Association team situated in Washington, D.C. it is one of the seven teams that area member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association. It was established initially as the Chicago Packers, and later played as Chicago Zephyrs Baltimore Bullets and the Washington Bullets before they reanmed themselves the Wizards. They play in the MCI Center wearing red, white and blue colored uniforms. To date the Washington Wizards have won only one NBA championship whereas they have bagged a total of four Conference titles and seven Division titles.
They made their debut as the Chicago Packers in 1961-62 season. They changed their name to the Zephyrs in the following season. In 1963 it was relocated to Baltimore where it was renamed the Baltimore Bullets. During their first year they ranked fourth in the 5 member Western Division. They debuted in NBA in the 1961-62 season with the identity of the Chicago Packers and won eighteen games their very first season. The renamed themselves the Zephyrs for a short while but switched to being called the Bullets after their relocation to Baltimore.
During late seventies, in 1978 to be precise the Bullets not only made it to the playoffs but also managed to defeat the Atlanta Hawks, the San Antonio Spurs and the Philadelphia 76ers and advanced to the Finals. But unfortunately they were pitted against the Seattle SuperSonics in the finals and were defeated by them. They fell three games behind and managed to win only two. But they made a surprise comeback towards the end and won the seven-game series and successfully captured the NBA title.
Later in the mid of nineties they successfully made two acquisitions which proved beneficial for the team collectively. They acquired Chris Webber and Juwan Howard who were ex university team mates in University and had led their university into a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship game. In May of 1997, the Bullets renamed themselves officially and also changed their logo. In 1999, former player Michael Jordan was appointed the president for the Washington Wizards’ basketball operations. September of 2001 saw the comeback of Chicago Jordan in the age of late thirties.
They maintained their players for most part of the 2006-07 season and only lost Jarvis Hayes, Calvin Booth and Michael Ruffin. They signed player Oleksiy Pecherov in result of a first-round pick in 2006 and players Nick Young and Dominic McGuire in 2007 picks. Their player Thomas was unable to make it to the regular season owing to an open heart surgery. They had several other changes in the team in context to their logos and uniform. They alternated the recently introduced gold and black uniform. They introduced last season along with the design change on the Verizon Center floor, the secondary colors of the team were changed from bronze to metallic gold whereas the numbers on the back of the players’ jersey were changed from white and blue mixed with bronze to golden. The lettering was also changed.

Team Play Allows Washington to Win First Outright Pac 10 Title in 56 Years

February 4th, 2010

Copyright © 2009 Ed Bagley

Washington’s 6-foot-7, 255-pound senior power forward has always been there—in the paint—for the last three years, battling taller, more athletic opponents. He brought his lunch pail and hard hat with him every night with no exceptions. Jon Brockman led the way in the underachieving times.

Now Brockman and his teammates just accomplished something that no basketball team at the University of Washington has done in 56 years—win an outright Pac 10 Championship title. He could not have done it alone, but it is even more certain that his Husky teammates could not have done it without their 3-year captain and leader.

Brockman was the role model and he set the tone that said “we can do this if we just play as a team and not worry about individual glory and statistics”. For at least one season one team among the 347 NCAA Division 1 teams bought into the “we are one” concept and went to work.

The result for the players was stunning, not in just professional growth but personal growth as well. Never more so than in the case of senior guard Justin Dentmon, an All-Pac 10 Freshman Team selection who struggled through two seasons before arriving this year as a total blessing and an All-Pac 10 First Team selection. Dentmon was also named the Pac 10′s Most Improved Player of the Year.

Junior forward Quincy Pondexter, who had been up and down like a yo-yo his first two years, finally settled down and began showing his talent and potential. He flat carried the Huskies at critical moments in some games.

True freshman guard Isaiah Thomas arrived on campus with a lot of hype and delivered big time—as a scorer, as a game-changing threat, and as a team player who exchanged some personal point production for more wins. The 5-foot-8 fearless lane splitter not only made the All-Pac 10 Freshman Team, he was also selected as the Pac 10 Freshman of the Year.

Sophomore guard Venoy Overton, who was a starter last year and came off the bench this year so Isaiah Thomas could start, transformed himself into one of the Pac 10′s defensive stoppers. Every time Overton moved, he had so much speed he looked like he was shot out of a cannon. He took on the best of the best and harassed them silly.

Forwards Matthew Bryan-Amaning (better known as MBA), Darnell Gant and Justin Holiday all had special moments and kept getting better and better as the team started piling up victories.

After playing themselves into at least a tie for the Pac 10 title, the Huskies put a huge exclamation point on an uplifting, positive, moving season by beating their heated cross-state rivals—the Washington State Cougars—67-60 to bring their home court record to 18-1 on the season.

But back to Brockman, a guy so tough under the basket he can go head-on against taller, more talented players in the paint and come out on top. Never, ever underestimate Brockman in the paint. He is fearless and can both give and take punishment; he has had his nose broken 5 times rebounding.

Brockman set the all-time Husky record for rebounding this year. He is the first Husky ever and the only the fourth player in Pac-10 history to have more than 1,700 career points and 1,200 rebounds. Brockman is the nation’s leader with 58 career double-doubles (at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in a single game).

Jay Bilas of ESPN.com has called Brockman the best rebounder in the nation. Brockman pulled down 18 rebounds in the title-clinching game against Washington State.

Washington has built its season around greatly improved defensive play and a balanced offense that favors no one and benefits everyone. Husky players actually dive for loose balls; they will potentially hurt themselves to keep the ball alive and in their hands.

They have 4 players in double-digits scoring. In regular season play, the Husky backcourt had both Dentmon and Thomas averaging 15 points a game, Brockman averaged 14 points and 11+ rebounds a game, and Pondexter added 11 per game. They have at least 8 players who can make a difference on the court.

Because of their great play and great coaching by Lorenzo Romar, Romar was selected as Pac 10 Coach of the Year. Romar has 3 great assistant coaches in Cameron Dollar, Paul Fortier and Jim Shaw. Lance LaVetter needs some props too as Director of Basketball Operations for the Huskies.

Washington started the season at 3-3 and then ended it with a 21-4 run to Husky greatness. As a former champion and record-setter I know how sweet it is to get to the top of the mountain; it is an accomplishment you will remember the rest of your life, and you will appreciate it more the older you get. One of my moments in the sun happened 47 years ago.

The Huskies begin their Pac 10 Conference Tournament play Thursday (3-12-09). They will be strong competitors for the Pac 10 Tourney title and will definitely be 1 of the 64 teams to have a run at the national title when March Madness begins March 19.

Get your Washington Capitals Tickets and Cheer your Team

November 12th, 2009

Grab your Washington Capitals tickets to watch the Capitals live in action against Senators, Canadiens, Penguins, and other NHL teams in the coming season. 2006-2007 season was not what the Capitals were hoping for. In fact, it was a very bad season for them, as they finished at last place in the Southeast Division. However, the fans are hoping for a great start this season for their favorite team.

The new changes that have been brought about during the off-season have given the fans and the team a lot of hope. George McPhee, the General Manager of Washington Capitals, has managed to get Michael Nylander from the New York Rangers. Michael will assist Alexander Ovechkin in the center. McPhee has also managed to get Nicklas Backstorm, Viktor Kozlov, and Tom Poti to join the Capitals. This is good news for the Capitals and fans can look forward to a great performance in the playoffs. Obviously you do need Washington Capitals tickets to cheer your team.

Washington Capitals was founded in 1974. They belong to the Southeast Division. Red, white and blue are the team’s colors. Chris Clark is the team’s captain. Bruce Boudreau has been officially announced as the Capitals’ coach on December 26, 2007.

A Slow Start

Washington Capitals had a slow start. In their very first season, they lost 67 games out of 80 games. The seventies were bad for them and so were the early eighties. The situation was so bad that nobody wanted Washington Capitals tickets. It was not until David Poile joined the team as General Manager that things started to look up. The changes that he introduced led to the team reaching the playoffs for the first time in 1983. Players like, Dennis Maruk, Mike Gartner, and Bobby Carpenter became great assets for the team.

The next fourteen years after 1983 saw the Capitals in the playoffs. But they lost every time. Even with good players like Mike Ridley, Gartner, Carpenter, Dino Ciccarelli, Dave Christian, Larry Murphy, and Bengt Gustafsson on their side, the Capitals never managed to reach the Stanley Cup finals.

A Great Future

They returned in 2003. However, 2004 was very disappointing for the team, as they had 23 wins and 56 losses. Presently the team has some of the finest players and fans are eagerly looking forward to their team’s return in the playoffs. You can get your Washington Capitals tickets online and catch your favorite players live in action.

Washington Capitals play at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C, which is where the team is based. The greatest thing about catching the action live at the Verizon Center is that you can enjoy Washington D.C before or after the game. That is what most of the fans do. There are restaurants, national monuments, local music, etc., that you can see and indulge in.

But for that you first need to buy your Washington Capitals tickets. You can first check out the different sitting section at the Verizon Center and then choose the seats that you would like. Book your tickets early to ensure that you get the best seats. Most online ticket brokers offer premium seats to their customers. With the tickets you can catch, the Capitals make a serious run for the Stanley Cup.
