What Are Internet Radio Hosts Looking For In Their Guests?
Copyright 2005 Black Butterfly Press
http://www.maxinethompson.com
As an Internet Radio Host of On The Same Page on
www.voiceamerica.com, over the past three and a half years, I
have interviewed such illustrious guests as Haki Madhubuti of
Third World Press, Dr. Rosie Milligan of Milligan Books,
Celebrity Mother Love, Mark Victor Hansen, Jack Canfield,
(Chicken Soup For the Soul Fame), Dan Poynter, and other
writing/publishing experts. From the experienced to the
non-experienced guests, this much I have gleaned—these skills
are learnable. Even if you are a first-time author, you, too,
can become an exciting interviewee.
Why is Internet radio important as a media? For one, it has a
global audience. I’ve interviewed guests who were as far away as
Paris and in the Bahamas. Anyone with a computer and Internet
Access can listen to your show
Most of all, Internet radio is not only the wave of the future,
it is beginning to be heard in automobiles, so this is a good
place to start your publicity trek.
What are Internet Radio Hosts looking for In Their Guests?
1. Hosts are drawn to an energetic, upbeat, personable guest. If
you have a flat liner personality, be honest with yourself.
Practice on a tape recorder, even if it’s your own answer
machine, or in the mirror. If necessary, get a media coach. But
practice, practice, practice.
2. Host like guests who are well-informed and on top of their
game. Stay abreast of trends and provide updated new
information. (Read the newspaper, the Internet, do research. Be
an information junkie.) Consider different hooks and angles,
i.e. how has the Internet changed the way we do business? How
can writers market their books on the Internet?
]]>
3. Hosts like controversy, but not particularly of the “shock
jock” variety. If you are speaking on a controversial subject,
be non-judgmental and do not offend any particular group of
people. Make sure you learn how not to use language, which is
condescending or demeaning such as using phrases like “those
people.”
4. If you are a fiction writer, show how your novel addresses
social issues such as race, police brutality, crime, corruption,
drugs, AIDS, etc. Most of all, show how your story can provide
information that improves the quality of other people’s lives,
even if your story is fiction.
5. If you are from a medical, business or scientific background,
make your interview interesting and lively. Don’t make it a
pedantic lecture.
Tips for Improving Your Interview:
Send the host your press release and a review copy of your book,
including news articles or book reviews, before the show.
Send the host a list of questions or topics that you are well
versed in.
Become a guest who knows how to talk about his/her work and not
just all about “me.” Remember, people are always tuned into this
station—WIFM—”What’s in it For Me?”
Don’t just try to sell the store (your book, your seminar, your
product), but sell the story.
Learn to answer in sound bites. Do not go over one minute for a
reply.
Drop your voice to cue the host that you are through speaking
and waiting for the next question.
Give the host time to ask a question, without having to
interrupt, which means you are going on too long.
Learn the importance of pausing and deep breathing. Don’t run on
like a motor mouth.
Learn the power of the pause, even while you are answering. This
habit will make listeners lean forward to hear what you’re
saying. It also sends a message that you are a serious person
who chooses his words carefully.
If possible, use anecdotes, recite poems, or read excerpts from
your book. Tasteful humor always works.
Don’t forget to provide your web page and where your book can be
purchased.
When you hear the music before the break, you have 30 seconds to
wrap up whatever point you were making.
Sharpen your axe. Attend Toastmaster’s or join Speaking Bureaus
to become a better speaker.
Learn how to adlib and speak off the cuff, particularly if a
caller catches you off guard.
Learn to disagree, without being disagreeable.
Listen to other shows as well as “On The Same Page” on
www.voiceamerica.com.
Before the show, confirm with the host. (Most of the time, I
confirm beforehand.) Email if an emergency comes up and you
can’t be on the show.
Although I usually email a thank you note, I seldom get them
back. Remember to send a Thank-you email. This could go a long
way if you get on Howard Stern’s Show or Oprah’s.
* “On The Same Page” airs on Tuesday at 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time
live, then re-airs at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time, Friday 4:00 p.m.
PST and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

Promoting Your Music Online: Unsigned bands finding new ways of reaching their public
With the recent rise of groups in the UK such as Arctic Monkeys and Arcade Fire, the internet is proving its worth more and more in the music industry. As traditional formats decline in use, the internet is providing independent musicians with a myriad of possibilities for promoting their music. Indeed, unsigned bands can reach their audiences without needing a record label.
Emerging artists used to spend most of their time down at the post office, licking envelopes, sending off cassettes and making further copies of their cassettes. Looking back, it seemed like the dark ages. Today’s indie music scene sees many bands sat at their computer screens, looking for new ways to promote their music. The emergence of several top bands over the last few months thanks to the Internet is proof that the cream will always rise to the top, and using the net, they have every chance of doing so.
Almost all artists have band pages nowadays. In fact, it seems to be the first step on the way to internet recognition. A band page will commonly feature a news page, a separate page for downloading music for free, a photos page, and a contact page. These band pages are, in effect, business cards for musicians. The website receives promotion on various music websites and forums, and the band can create their own image through web branding.
The majority of band pages are very simple. Some carry an internet radio feature on the home page, others allow you to simply download the music in mp3 format, others have lyrics and features on the group, but the intention is always the same: to get people to listen to the group’s music.
However, the limitation to a band page is that unless the band promotes itself through other means, i.e. through forums, internet radio stations, flyers at concerts, etc., the website will receive very few visitors.
Internet radio is becoming more and more popular. Sites like www.bluebeamradio.com function largely thanks to emerging artists who wish to promote their music, creating a partnership that brings a community of musicians together. By allowing groups to register for free and to post their mp3s, these radio stations are becoming an essential stop for new bands and independent musicians wishing to create a buzz about themselves.
The idea is catching on. Many listeners want to listen to one particular genre, and are frustrated at mainstream radio offerings. By finding an internet radio station that fits their needs, they are introduced to new bands. New bands, in return, are being given an audience that has already decided which genre they want to listen to, and internet radio stations like Blue Beam Radio, for example, offer the top-rated bands prizes, such as a concert in New York. The potential to be heard is enormous; it simply requires time in front of the computer!
]]>
So while internet radio stations offer streaming music, people will always want to download music for free online. While the music industry is clearly unhappy about free downloads of mp3s or other music formats, listeners will always find ways of sharing their music, it seems. Emerging artists are today taking advantage of that by scouring the internet for sites that offer free music downloads, and literally giving their music away.
The disadvantage to this is that most people will not automatically download online music from a group that they do not know. Almost all sites that offer free music for download operate using a search engine, and users search directly for a group. However, word of mouth on the internet means that when a band is being talked about, people will actually search for that particular band. The best example of this, as mentioned at the top of this article, is the Arctic Monkeys.
Hailing from Sheffield in the UK, the Arctic Monkeys’ success is due entirely to word of mouth on the internet. Their music is pure indie. Raw, punky, and blessed with no shortage of attitude, the buzz around the Arctic Monkeys started on blogs, and started to snowball. They were offering free mp3 downloads via their own website, which was a very basic portal including downloads, photos, future concerts and latest news. Once the buzz started growing into a shout, their music was available on internet radio stations, music download sites, blogs linked to blogs linked to blogs… very soon, they became the first band to reach number 1 in the UK through internet downloads!
What started off as a music curiosity became a music event. The band were soon appearing on national television, and even on the news, as their album sold more copies on its first day of release than the first releases of Oasis or The Beatles.
What happened in Sheffield can happen anywhere in the world. The internet has brought bands and listeners together at an international level – the rap artist at his home in Seattle can reach the rap fan at his home in Singapore, the independent musician in New York can reach the indie fan in York… but it is also interesting how communities are forming at a local level.
The internet is providing emerging artists with opportunities to create a buzz around their latest concerts, generating an audience that would previously have taken a great deal of legwork to gather. Through mailing lists, online flyers, blog and forum entries, a music event can be publicised many ways. The more innovative a group becomes, the more chance it has of reaching its public.
Local music forums have popped up all around the world. Indie bands will always look for a solid local fan base, and it is thanks to the internet forum that they have found this. Using their forum post signature to promote their website, these bands post flyers, concert information and more, and even share information about how to find concerts, where to buy equipment, and recording techniques. When looking for a local community of listeners, indie bands can easily find local communities of bands who are doing the same thing. While seemingly these bands rarely get the chance to meet each other unless they are playing a gig together, the internet gives them the opportunity to discuss and promote 24 hours a day.
In truth, the internet is simply offering an extension to the old “local scene” that existed before it. Indie music has grown over the last few years largely because of the adaptability of independent musicians to the internet, and because of their community spirit. While prior to the internet, a local music scene would have been limited to a handful of bands, today it is much easier for a group to break onto the local music scene, as long as they have a strong website, a strong image, and of course, good music.
And in the end, the essential truths of the music industry will always bear out. If you don’t have the music, you won’t make the grade. Listeners are canny people, and they will always filter out the good bands from the average bands, regardless of how good the website is, or how persistent the promotion is. However, as indie music flourishes, so do the best bands, and if they are on the right internet radio stations, if they can create the right buzz around themselves, and if they can reach their audience, emerging artists today have every chance not just of increasing their audiences, but of getting a contract with a record label.
Question by Patches O’Houlihan: Is Obama’s inability to get Pelosi and Reid to broadcast their negotiations another sign of his weakness?
Obama said several times on the campaign trail that Americans would be able to see the negotiations on C-SPAN. Pelosi and Reid are blowing him off. Is that yet another sign of weakness for Comrade Obama barely a year after the “Hope and Change” rhetoric was at its zenith?

Cessna’s Citation Family
The Citation X, first flown in 1993 and certificated in 1996, received an upgrade in 2000 with an increase in weight and thrust. Perhaps it should be noted that the “X” in its name refers to the Roman numeral and not a letter.
The aircraft introduced a number of new design features, including a highly swept wing (37 degrees) and a supercritical airfoil, to give an impressive top speed.
In contrast with earlier Citation aircraft, the wing is mounted below the fuselage, rather than passing through it. This one piece wing offers greater cabin volume and engineering simplicity.
It can carry two crew and up to eight passengers. Powered by two Rolls-Royce AE3007C1 engines, it is said to be the worlds fastest civilian aircraft, with a top cruising speed of 525 knots/Mach 0, 92 .Maximum cruising altitude is 5100 feet, range is more than 3070 nautical miles.
During 2009, the first Citation X to be fitted with Elliptical Winglets was delivered .Cessna and Winglet Technology, LLC, collobarated to develop the latter’s patented Elliptical Winglet for retrofit on the Citation X.
Cessna has announced that it will feature the Honeywell Primus Elite avionics platform as well as an upgraded cabin management system on new Citation X business jets beginning this year. Honeywell’s Primus Elite will also be available as an optional service bulletin upgrade through the Cessna Citation Xs.Based on the Citation Xs current Honeywell Primus 2000 system, the five-panel Elite system features liquid crystal displays offering high-resolution graphics display capability for electronic approach charts with aircraft position worldwide as well as XM satellite weather in the United States and Southern Canada.
In addition, improved moving map capability will depict geographical and political boundaries as well as airspace and airways.
Improvements to the cabin management system also included as a standard feature for 2011 deliveries will be touch-screen control panels, MP3 player inputs, an improved stereo sound system optimized for the Citation X cabin, updated Air show display imagery and dual Blu-ray players with a high-definition display monitor mounted in the forward closet.
Citation Ten
Last October, Cessna announced the launch of the Citation Ten, alarger, and advanced version of the Citation X.It also marked the debut of the Garmin G5000 avionics suite and a Cessna-exclusive advanced management system. It features more powerful and more efficient Rolls-Royce engines .First flight of the new Citation Ten will be in the late 2011, with certification and first delivery in 2013.

Performance is also enhanced with a 211 nautical mile increase in range at high-speed cruise 97 kilograms increase in maximum payload and a faster rate of climb direct to 45000 feet.
The Citation Ten will use a pair of new Rolls-Royce AE3007C2 high-flow-fan turbines, each rated at 7034 pounds of thrust. This gives a 4% improvement in takeoff thrust, a 9% improvement in climb performance, a 7% improvement in cruise thrust and an additional 1, 4% improvement in specific fuel consumption. The Rolls-Royce AE3007C2 will be certificated in 2013 ahead of aircraft type certification.
Cessna is the first company to announce it will use the integrated Garmin G5000 avionics suite, which will be certificated for FAR Part 25 operations (commercial transport aircraft). The Citation Tens restyled ,clean cockpit design is anchored by the new ,fully integrated Garmin G5000 system that centres on three 14-inch LCD primary and multifunction displays and four touch-screen control panels.
Among the standard features of the new system are a pilot-vehicle touch-screen interface ,TCAS 11 with change 7.1,synthetic vision technology, electronic charts,Garmins Safe Taxi,a dual flight management system with WAAS LPV and RNP 0.3 SAAAR capability ,solid-state weather radar with turbulence detection and vertical scan capability ,integrated terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS),ADS-B Out and Link 2000+data link. Options include satellite weather and an ICAO Type 1A flight data recorder.
The company has teamed with Dallas-based Heads Up Technologies to develop an intelligent cabin electrical system (CMS) that integrates cabin electrical systems, avionics and communications through a fibre optic backbone and an intuitive touch-screen user interface, resulting in “the ultimate connectivity experience”.
Technology is the foundation of the Citation Ten CMS,which features an interactive ,touch-screen system controller at each passenger seat for audio(digital media,MP3/iPhone), video(digital, Blu Ray), interactive moving map, cabin temperature, lights, window shades and even cabin diagnostics.
The dual club-seat cabin arrangement also includes 110-or 220-volt electrical outlets and multiple USB/device inputs. High-speed Internet browsing, satellite radio and cabin Wi-Fi are available as options.

Sounds Natural But Are They? The Secret of How Online Radio Presenters Make Their Links Work
They are able to connect with the listeners seemingly in an effortless way. For those who have ever tried their hand at speaking in public being presenter, tv, radio or as a speaker, you’ll know that what looks easy is, for most of us, hard!
So how do you have coming across like the pro especially in online radio? The secret is not just talent but hard work. Preparation behind the scenes is the key. According to Chris Evans, the UK’s Radio 2 national breakfast DJ, every link needs to have a beginning, a middle and an end.
All very well in theory but in reality you also have the added pressure of that large camera lens, a microphone or even an audience staring directly at you. You also have the clock ticking quickly, or so it seems.
The secret is thinking about the links beforehand but here’s the crucial bit, writing them down before the show. You see it’s much easier to ad lib when something is written down rather trying to make it all up in your head.
But what content do you put into your links? Look around you, talk about personal life. You may have had an awful journey to work so chances are that your listeners will share your empathy. Think also about other share experiences that you and your listeners may have had. What about school days or a holidays by the seaside? A little bit of observation can help produce stunning content for links. As a result you too could sound like the pros.
The secret to sounding like the pros during any kind of public speaking, including online radio, has to be preparation and that means writing links beforehand.
