Q&A: washington, d.c. Tourist spots , transportation and culture?

June 19th, 2014
Hotel in Washington
by wallyg

Question by Ashish: washington, d.c. Tourist spots , transportation and culture?
what are the main tourist attractions in washington, dc? What is the culture and cuisine of washington? And lastly, how is the transportation system of washington?

Best answer:

Answer by nickdc1960
Plan on getting a hotel in the suburban areas of Wash DC, either Northern Virginia or Suburban Maryland. Get yourself a hotel that is close to the local Metro (DC subway) stop.

The absolute best way to travel around Washington DC is by using the Metro (DC’s subway system). You can park your car at SOME Metro stations and then buy some fare cards and use the Metro to get around town. Why do I recommend the Metro? Because while traveling by car, you will have a hard time finding available parking in Wash DC. Most parking garages are filled-up with commuters and so forth. Plus, you never know when the police are going to be closing an entire street and diverting traffic to who knows where, just to accomodate one of the many parades they like to have in DC.

You can either get a shuttle from your hotel to the local Metro station (many hotels offer this), or you can drive your car to some of the Metro stations, that have parking lots. Those Metro stations with parking lots are usually FREE on weekend.

The best thing to do is check-out the Metro map and get off at what they call the Smithsonian Metro stop. When you go above ground…it’s all right there…like the Emerald City in Wizard of Oz. The Smithsonian stop is right in the heart of the National Mall that extends from the Capitol to the Potomac River. All the major monuments are right there.

Be sure to do the obligatory tours of the Capitol and Washington Monuments. Tickets for entry are FREE…but you have to get them in advance of the time you wish to take the tours. Best bet is to get your tickets in the morning for an afternoon tour, and then spend the morning exploring.

Security is tight at the Capitol. No food. No liquids. No nail clippers. Yadda yadda. But the tour is pretty cool.

Ok, but the real treasures of DC are the Smithsonian Museums..and they are also located right on the National Mall, between the Washington Monument and Capitol. Again, entrance is FREE and there are no tickets to bother with. Modest security to get in…then you can enjoy them. Natural History Museum. American History Museum. Some other art galleries (which are also super cool). But, my favorite is the Air & Space Museum. I’ve taken friends there from out of town that said they were not interested in that “stuff”. But once they stepped through the doors and saw the Gemini and Apollo space capsules, their eyes lit-up. They also have an inexpensive food court in the Air & Space museum with stuff like McDonald’s and Pizza and sandwiches. (Probably the cheapest place to eat on the Mall.)

Some final pointers here. Be sure to dress comfortable. Be sure to have some really comfortable walking shoes. The National Mall is a BIG area to cover…and so are the museums. You probably know this, but have a game plan in case your family-group becomes seperated.

Getting a tour of the White House is not easy. You have to have a group of 10 people to do it and you have to get prior permission through your Congressman. Back in the days when they had fewer restrictions, I went on a White House tour. I found it to be – boring. The US Capitol tour is a much better tour. And frankly, that’s where all the action is taking place in DC.

Oh, and others on here will recommend stuff like Georgetown and DuPoint Circle areas and stuff like that. Fine…if you have the time. But there’s not much to see. Those are more “trendy areas” where artists and coffee shop types like to hang-out and sip lattes, wear Birkenstock shoes and discuss ancient Zorastian poetry. The kids will get bored very fast. (Even I get bored very fast.)

Most hotels will have free touristy type maps of the area to promote the local sites and sounds of DC. Plan on eating lunch at the Air & Space Museum and then saving your appetites for when you go back to your hotel (where it will be cheaper to eat and you have some reasonable choices that won’t break the bank).

How does transportation work in Washington DC?

January 31st, 2013

Question by Heisenberg: How does transportation work in Washington DC?
I’m thinking of taking a trip down to Washington DC. Can anyone recommend a hotel near the monuments? Also need to know how transportation work there? Are the monuments like the Vietnam Wall and the National Mall close together? Is there ample public parking at them or would I be better off taking taxi’s?

July 30th, 2011

Question by mstc2: What are the transportation available from Lancaster PA to washington Dc and New york city?
Hi, this is my first time going America. I will be staying lancaster PA for quite some time, would like to know what are the available transportation from columbia, Lancaster PA to Washington DC and New york City? And lastly how long will it take to reach the cities and the price for the transportation? Thanks a million.

Best answer:

Answer by mr danger
It’s your lucky day
Amtrak will get you from Lancaster PA “LNC” to Union Station in Washington DC” WAS ” via a connection at the 30th St Station in Philadelphia
“PHL”
Once you reach either PHL or WAS then getting a train into NYC “NYP” is easy
The route between WAS and Boston “BOS ” is Amtrak’s most heavily traveled route and as such it gives you the greatest amount of trains to select from.
Amtrak offers something called a USA Rail Pass that you may find to be a good value.

What is the best transportation from Washington DC to Baltimore on the Weekend? Marc doesn’t run?

November 16th, 2010

Question by canes: What is the best transportation from Washington DC to Baltimore on the Weekend? Marc doesn’t run?
I am looking to travel to both Washington DC for a night then to Baltimore Maryland. I was planning on flying and not renting a car, so I was wondering what the best way to get from Washinton DC to downtown Baltimore was on a weekend. I notice MARC does not operate on the weekends. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by bap32211
renting a car is probably the best way. Ive lived there for 21 years. im 21 but i live in california now. traffic can be a pain in the butt and the roads in DC also.

They are not that far away from each other. 50 miles from DC to Baltimore. So that is about an hour drive. Try taking a taxi?
