Senator Landrieu, What A Naughty Woman from Louisiana

Senator Landrieu, What A Naughty Woman from Louisiana

Last August, when the public option was declared dead by insider Democrats and the media, DAA members knew better. We knew, if we kept the pressure on, we could back up House progressives and deliver real reform with a public option.

We were right.

On Saturday night the House of Representatives passed a public option by majority vote. Now, all eyes turn to the Senate. With only a few weeks before the full Senate votes on healthcare, we have the majority votes needed to pass real reform with a public option. The one possible roadblock is a Republican filibuster. But Republicans can’t stop the bill on their own. They need at least one member of the 60-Senator Democratic Caucus to join them to kill reform.

We’re not pulling punches. We need to turn up the pressure on any senator who might be a Turncoat Democrat who supports a Republican filibuster. It’s time to bring back our hard-hitting ad pressuring Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana to support a public option. If we raise 0,000 by Thursday, we can blanket the airwaves and turn up the pressure for Mary Landrieu back home before she screws everything up worse.

With your support, we’ll hit the airwaves in Louisiana with our hard-hitting 60 second T.V. ad. featuring Karen Gadbois, one of Landrieu’s constituents, a DFA member, and a local hero for her work exposing corruption after Katrina. She shares her compelling story about how the public option would impact her life and asks Senator Landrieu to choose whose side she’s on.

Karen’s story is very heartfelt and personal. It highlights a real American who needs real reform. And it’s the kind of high pressure ad that no senator wants run against them — especially during an election year.

Senator Landrieu has a choice to make. Stand with the Democratic Caucus against a Republican filibuster and we’ll stop running the ad. But stand with Republicans to kill healthcare reform and this ad is only the beginning.

Saturday was a big day, but this fight isn’t over. We’re turning up the pressure and pulling out all the stops to win. And it’s going to happen because of you.

Help Us Oust Senator Landrieu

Thank you for everything you do.

A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama’s Mother

A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama’s Mother

A major publishing event: an unprecedented look into the life of the woman who most singularly shaped Barack Obama-his mother.

Barack Obama has written extensively about his father, but little is known about Stanley Ann Dunham, the fiercely independent woman who raised him, the person he credits for, as he says, what is best in me.” Here is the missing piece of the story.

Award-winning reporter Janny Scott interviewed nearly two hundred of Dunham’s friends, colleagues, and relatives (including both her children), and combed through boxes of personal and professional papers, letters to friends, and photo albums, to uncover the full breadth of this woman’s inspiring and untraditional life, and to show the remarkable extent to which she shaped the man Obama is today.

Dunham’s story moves from Kansas and Washington state to Hawaii and Indonesia. It begins in a time when interracial marriage was still a felony in much of the United States, and culminates in the present, with her son as our president- something she never got to see. It is a poignant look at how character is passed from parent to child, and offers insight into how Obama’s destiny was created early, by his mother’s extraordinary faith in his gifts, and by her unconventional mothering. Finally, it is a heartbreaking story of a woman who died at age fifty-two, before her son would go on to his greatest accomplishments and reflections of what she taught him.

Oprah Winfrey and David Letterman Part 1: Black woman Style

July 19th, 2010

Oprah Winfrey visits David Letterman. This episode of Ricky Lake shows black men who don’t date black women. Black Women have been the backbone of the black community, yet there are alot of brothers who will not show them proper respect. Senator Barack Obama gave a father’s day speech in which he stated that black men don’t do enough to take care of black children, black women and black families. The list of most powerful black women includes: Oprah Winfrey Condoleeza Rice Cathy Hughes of BET Wendy Williams from WBLS There are many others on the list, which can be found in Ebony and Essence Magazine, as well as BET (Black Entertainment Television). Other notables might include Jada Pinkett Smith, wife of black star Will Smith, Alicia Keys, Tina Turner, Queen Latifah, and more. The black celebs power list would include Don Cheadle, Samuel L. Jackson, Laurence Fishburn, Cuba Gooding Jr., Halle Berry, Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington, Tyler Perry (House of Payne, which isn’t a very good show by the way). In all their forms, these actors remind us of the importance of black love, african american achievement, and black success. The notion that they can take the place of black leaders such as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Cornel West, Dr. Boyce Watkins, Michael Eric Dyson or Marc Lamont Hill is remote. However, black hollywood has always been a place to look for the leading figures in the African American communuity. At least it’s better than the hip hop and bootie shaking they
