Christopher Hitchens – ‘Is Afghanistan Worth The Price?’ (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty)

September 27th, 2011

Christopher Hitchens is one of the most prolific and controversial writers in the English-speaking world. A prominent atheist, he is the author of “God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything,” which became an international best-seller in 2007. He has also written books on topics ranging from the partition of Cyprus to Thomas Jefferson and the Anglo-American relationship; his most recent is the memoir “Hitch 22.” RFE/RL writer at large James Kirchick recently interviewed Hitchens at his home in Washington about his left-wing revolutionary past, his views on America, Iran’s nuclear program, Turkey’s Islamist turn, Putin’s Russia, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and sampled his views on a variety of international figures. In the past year, many voices have called for a downscaling in the Western commitment to Afghanistan and a removal of NATO troops — including individuals who initially supported the 2001 war that ousted the Taliban from power. Hitchens disagrees.

Check out the Newseum in Washington, DC: It?s Well Worth the Price of Admission

November 14th, 2010

Check out the Newseum in Washington, DC: It?s Well Worth the Price of Admission

As newspapers are threatening to go out of print, (with some already dead and buried,) it was wonderful to immerse myself in the Newseum in Washington DC, where seven floors are crammed with print and broadcasting journalism, their history, and major stories they have covered throughout time.

Though most of the museums in Washington are free, this one is well worth the fee ( for students.) Plan to spend at least four hours there. There’s a cafeteria, but you can also get your hand stamped so you can leave for lunch and come back.

Start at the bottom floor and work your way up. It’s easy to get lost in what you’re viewing but pace yourself so you don’t miss anything. The Concourse Level leads you to the 4D movie which is about 15 minutes and provides a great history of journalism. The fourth dimension consists of seats that move (they don’t move much) and some surprises that I won’t tell cause I don’t want to spoil it. That floor also contains a cool G-Men and Journalists exhibit, part of the Berlin Wall, a Learning Center and Sports theater. The sports theater is a must. The movie presents a history of sports journalism with some fabulous clips that you will absolutely remember.

Next, walk upstairs to the first floor where the highlight is the incredible wall of Pulitzer Prize winning photographs. I could have spent an hour here alone. Bring a tissue – some of the memories might move you to tears. On this floor you can also find an Annenberg Theater and Great Hall of News.

Level 2 has an Interactive Newsroom and an attendant will help you shoot a clip. There are many interactive tv’s and an Ethics Center.

Level 3 contains two real studios where the ABC show This Week with George Stephanopoulos is produced, and other media experts give talks. There is also a newsroom TV studio and info on Edward R. Murrow, as well as a Journalists Memorial and display of editorial cartoons.

Next up on level 4 is an incredibly moving 9/11 gallery which features probably a hundred newspapers from around the world reporting the World Trade Center attacks. There is also a video of interviews with journalists who describe their experiences reporting that day’s news. Another good place for tissues. There is also a First Dogs exhibit (though I skipped this one) and a First Amendment Gallery. A fascinating picture display of Woodstock includes pictures found in the basement of a kid who was in high school at the time, and covered the event for his school paper.

Walk upstairs to level 5 to see a very cool Woodstock movie from the concert event 40 years ago. There is also a huge gallery that includes 500 years of journalistic history as well as a replica of a news satellite.

The top floor has an interesting Lincoln exhibit which focuses on the hunt for Booth, Lincoln’s killer. There are also front pages from newspapers from every state, which differ from other ones displayed outside the museum. An interesting pictorial display called Photobama showes photos from the inauguration. Step outside on the terrace for an incredible view of DC, including the Capitol.

I’m sure I’ve left some things out, and some of the exhibits change. In fact, there was already a display about Don Hewitt who passed away only a week or so before my visit. One display showed four newspapers that are now completely defunct. It saddens me to think that one day I might not be able to eat breakfast with a newspaper in hand. At least the Newseum will be there to chronicle the rich history we’ve enjoyed in news.

Though this is not a place to bring your preschoolers, I think kids in elementary school and above would enjoy it. My college aged kids loved it. There are lots of interactive displays and a couple of fabulous movies, including one in 4D.

The Newseum is located at 555 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W. and my GPS took me down I-95 toward Virginia and then back up C Street. It was a traffic-free, very easy ride. There are two pay parking lots at 6th and C which cost each.

I hope you enjoy your experience there as much as I did!

I produced the Romper Room and Friends TV show and Bowling for Dollars when I worked for Claster Television in the ’80′s and ’90′s. With three kids of my own, I stopped working there in 1996. Today I am a freelance writer and preschool teacher and I am in the process of publishing my first book about preschool advice for parents. Check out my blog at www.preschoolteach.blogspot.com

You Need to Pay for Satellite Radio But it is Worth it

June 12th, 2010

You have probably been hearing about satellite radio for a while and of course, lately there has been plenty of news about Howard Stern, he is bringing in many listeners to Sirius and the fan base is growing quickly.

One of the big differences between regular radio and satellite radio is that with satellite you get hundreds of channels that are of digital quality, plus on the screen you know who is performing because it gives you that information. There are very few channels on satellite radio that have commercials. With over 100 channels to choose from there is always something good to listen to. No commercials just the music you want to listen to , you don’t have to listen to salesmen, fuel companies, food advertisements, you will have no static, you will be able to listen to your music or talk show with no interruptions 24 hours a day. There are so many channels; a few of them are comedy, local weather and traffic, women’s issues, sports, old time talk shows from the 20s to the 40s.

Through digital magic, you will not get static or any other types of disturbances you would normally get from an analog radio. The possibilities do not end there though, as it may even be possible for digital stations to broadcast pictures and videos directly to your car or home stereo through the magic of digital broadcasting. When receiving a signal from satellite the signal is completely digital and everyone knows a digital signal sounds cleaner and there is no static, you either get the signal or there is not signal. The signal is encoded and sent to the satellite and then it is sent back down to a receiver which it will be decoded and then the receiver plays the sound. If you find you loose the signal it is because when you travel you move along the earth and since the earth is round you will sometimes loose the signal because the satellites are traditional on the horizons.

Now, people you don’t need to switch stations when driving because you cannot get a clear station in, you can listen to the same station or hundreds of other stations ranging from news, music and news in better quality than AM or FM bands. To receive the digital audio streams you will need a antenna to receive the signal.

Its small, portable and it fits in your purse or pocket, don’t be fooled because they are small, they give the best sounding quality a radio can offer. The auto manufacturers are installing satellite radios to enhance the new automobiles, and many stores are now carrying the portable models to be used in the homes.

Satellite radio is subscription based, meaning that you pay a monthly fee for the service. The purchase of a satellite radio and a small monthly fee will open a whole world of ad-free radio listening to you. You will need to pay a monthly or yearly subscription fee to enjoy satellite radio. Many of the automobile dealerships and manufacturers offering many different types of incentives, so are giving 3 months free or even up to 6 months of free service to get you hooked, they are also throwing in no activation fee.

How Much is a Washington 1964 Silver Quarter Value Worth in Dollars?

March 17th, 2010

The US Washington 1964  Silver Quarter coin was minted before 1965. The 1964 Silver Quarter coin, Roosevelt dime coin, Kennedy half coin and Peace Dollar coin, all these coins contain 90% silver. Yet, sadly the Peace dollar does not exist any more because they were sent back for melt down before they hit the streets. But that’s a story for another day. The nickel has about 35% silver content and the penny was most often copper.

People will invest in silver and gold bullion when they are in times of economic trouble like butter on bread as a hedge to fight against inflation. The price of a 1 oz silver bullion eagle will cost you about 20 – 30 dollars at today’s prices. These silver bullion coins might be out of your price range.

This is where the silver quarter coins minted 1964 and before, could be a good alternative to the full 1 oz bullion coins and bars. The value and worth of these silver quarter coins can be bought for about $2.50 – $3 a piece at today’s prices.  The price will vary with the spot price, as we head into 2010. The silver quarters are generally lower priced than bullion coins, and are fractionally smaller making them more affordable.

It is getting harder by the day to find 1964 silver quarter coin, dime coin,  half dollar coin, and dollar coins in circulation today. People  like myself search for these silver coins. The automatic sorting machines suck out the rest of the silver coins, even nickel coins get sucked up and melted for profitable gains.  Yet still it should not stop one from looking for them little gems. I can spot them pretty fast now that I have looked for the silver coins for years.  At this time, I do pick up the odd silver coin but because I live in Canada it is a little easer to find a Canadian pre 1968 silver coin than it would be to find a 1964 quarter and older coin. It can be fun to spot and find a silver quarter, from change because the tiller did not know that they just gave you 3 dollars in change instead of 25 cents.

Pre 1964 silver quarter coins are collectible and somewhat still cheap.

Check out the Newseum in Washington, DC: It?s Well Worth the Price of Admission

Love Music Worth Listening to

February 27th, 2010

Love music are tunes and sounds composed specially to talk about and deliver messages of love. This kind of music has been in existence since we came into being. This is because love inspires so many things. In the villages of Africa, love music was a feature of the night life. Single girls and boys would come together to dance away as they explored possibilities of love. Such dances were organised to bring people together, as they sang and chanted praises to love. But, there was much more to love music than the fun. They were and still are a tool of communication to both the young and old. For singles who were almost getting married, the music was tailored with words that brought out useful information on how to conduct yourself with your lover. Through the music, girls were taught how to treat their husbands. Some of the topics included, how to show respect, how to make them happy sexually, how to do house chores and so much more. Today, this still remains but, love has revolutionalised to encompass some of the more modern aspects that love brings.

The music is a source of entertainment for many and, it is music that you can just relax with and reflect on the good old days. There are all sorts of categories when it comes to music for love. You will find slow music and even fast music for love. Rap music in the industry has been on the forefront to incorporate love lyrics. However, modern music has been criticized and some of the concerns are that it no longer holds deep meaning for society. This has been seen to be so and, when people think of the greatest music for love, many have to walk along the corridors of history to a song from a while back. There is nothing more exciting than litsening to old music and reflecting. However, there are a few artists who have managed to put their best foot forward and they have composed great music for love during modern times. Love can be dynamic and so is music. For this reason, the music appeals to some people and another kind of music will appeal to other kinds of people. In other words, we must appreciate what we have because others like it.

The best thing about music is that you can litsen to variety and you can determine the kinds of messages you hear. There is sad music and happy music for love. Sad music is often about how love became sour or how people ended their relationship. This kind of messages are vital because they show both sides of the coin. They often come with some encouraging lyrics and many can relate to the songs. Happy music for love is loved by everyone. It shows all the merits that love can bring in life. It inspires hope for love in many a broken heart. As you choose which music you want to litsen to, make sure that it is not only entertaining but has helpful lyrics to build you.
