Groundbreaking Radio Djs Of The Last 100 Years

July 4th, 2016

From Stockton, California at the turn of the 20th century to Guinness World Record-breaking female DJS in the 21st century, radio has had its fair share of highlights.

The stage was set by a 16-year-old Californian studying at Herold College of Engineering and Wireless. Armed with nothing but a box of records, a small spark transmitter and little idea of where the road ahead led, Ray Newby was the world’s first disc jockey.

Ray gave this statement on CBS’s I’ve Got a Secret:

“We used popular records at that time, mainly Carusco records, because they were very good and loud; we needed a boost… we started on an experimental basis and then, because this is novel, we stayed on schedule continually without leaving the air at any time from that time on except for a very short time during World War I, when the government required us to remove the antenna… Most of programming was records, i’ll admit, but of course we gave out news as we could obtain it.”

In Britain, the BBC launched their first radio station at 7:00 on September 30, 1967 in response to the popular offshore pirate stations such as Radio Caroline. Tony Blackburn launched the breakfast show with a cheery disposition. His first words to the British nation were “And good morning everyone, welcome to the exciting new sound of Radio 1.” His first song was Flowers in the Rain by The Move.

Radio 1 has long-been the most popular radio station in the UK with 21st-century listening figures well above ten million. When it launched, another disc jockey started playing an eclectic selection of music including psychedelic rock, reggae and punk records.

John Robert Parker Ravenscroft OBE, known professionally as John Peel was the one DJ that everyone has aspired to be in his wake. Awarded Melody Maker’s DJ of the Year 11 times, Sony’s Broadcaster of the Year in 1993, the Godlike Genius Award from NME in 1994 and countless other accolades, the radio world was at this man’s feet both before and after he died in 2004.

In a world primarily dominated by men, Annie Nightingale’s entrance to the scene in 1970 was something worthy of the Guiness Book of Rercords. Indeed, it was her length of service that won her acclaim. At 40 years in 2010, Nightingale is the longest-serving female DJ.

The accolade was presented to her by Liam Gallagher – but it’s not just her service that has made her a noteworthy DJ. Similar to Peel, Nightingale is perhaps best-known for her choice of music. She is forever fond of pushing the boundaries of new music from punk rock and new wave to acid house and bassline.

In praise of Nightingale’s long-service, Liam Gallagher said “Annie is a true icon of British Style. She’s been on Radio 1 since before I was born… I hope she’s still here in another 40 years!”

While radio broadcasting is still 100-years-young, there will no doubt be another selection of top-notch DJs, pioneering the way we listen to music in the future.

Radio Broadcasting: The Early Years

May 28th, 2016

Radio plays a large part in modern society as a source of information, a place to hear your favourite music and a way of keeping up with modern trends. There have been massive advances in terms of broadcasting in the last ten years, but where did its roots come from?

It all began in 1857 when a Parisian printer and bookseller invented the phonograph. Leon Scott’s invention could record sound – yet there was no way of playing back the recording. It was another 20 years before another Frenchman, Charles Cros, patented an early version of the phonograph cylinder – a device that could actually play back sound.

A name synonymous with the phonograph cylinder is Thomas Alva Edison. The American was the first man to actually present the machine to world, at some time between 1877 and 1892. And in 1892, German-born Emile Berliner began commercial production of his gramaphone records – the first disc openly available to the public.

So it took almost 40 years to create record – the Disc Jockey’s main tool. So what next?

Reginald Fessenden was a Canadian inventor who performed pioneering experiments in radio at the end of the 19th century, which culminated in the first radio broadcast on December 21, 1906. Fessenden effectively became the first real DJ with a broadcast that contained both speech and music – a recording of a contralto singing Handel’s Largo from Xerxes.

The first person to begin DJing in earnest was Californian Ray Newby. In 1909 he began playing records on a small spark transmitter while studying at Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless. Come 1910, regular radio broadcasting started using live sound as well as prerecorded music. Newby was known as a disco jockey. After time, the term was changed to disc jockey, and later DJ.

In the 100 years since radio broadcasting first became popular, not much has changed in terms of content. Comedy, drama, news and sports reporting all majored as topics of conversation when radio was first pioneered. The only components that have changed drastically over the years have been the music and the ways in which the sound is transmitted.

In today’s modern world, you can stream radio over the internet, listen to shows through DAB digital radio and even download podcasts to listen to at your leisure. With such incredible advances in such a short amount of time, where will be in another 100 years?

Jon is a firm believer in community spirit and values local news and community radio above the national and international media.
